Chapter 2: The Surprise That Broke Everything

Marcus had imagined a completely different homecoming.

He pictured Nia running down the hallway.

He pictured her pretending she wasn’t excited.

He pictured Vanessa complaining that he worked too much, while secretly smiling because she was happy he was back.

Instead, the house was silent.

Too silent.

Marcus placed his suitcase near the entrance.

“Hello?””

No answer.

He frowned.

“Anybody home?””

A few seconds later, Vanessa appeared from the living room.

Her expression changed the moment she saw him.

“Marcus?””

She forced a smile.

“You’re early.””

“I finished the meetings sooner.””

He leaned forward to hug her, but something caught his attention.

A small white sneaker sat beside the patio door.

A child’s sneaker.

Nia’s sneaker.

Marcus looked at it carefully.

“Where’s Nia?””

Vanessa’s smile became stiff.

“She’s upstairs.””

But Marcus knew something was wrong.

A father learns the difference between a normal silence and a dangerous one.

He walked toward the patio.

“Marcus, wait.””

Her voice was sharper than usual.

He stopped.

Slowly, he turned.

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Marcus noticed.

He reached for the curtain.

Then he pulled it open.

His entire body went still.

Outside stood his daughter.

Alone.

Shivering.

Her hands pressed against the glass.

“Nia?””

The world seemed to stop.

Marcus unlocked the door so quickly he nearly broke the handle.

He rushed outside.

“Nia!””

The girl looked up.

The moment she saw him, her face collapsed.

“Daddy…”

Marcus removed his jacket and wrapped it around her.

“Baby, what happened?””

She couldn’t answer.

Her teeth were chattering too hard.

He lifted her into his arms.

Behind him, Vanessa followed.

“She ran outside and refused to come in.””

Marcus stopped walking.

Slowly, he looked at his wife.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She’s dramatic. You know how she is.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then he looked down at his daughter.

“Nia. Did you run outside?””

The girl looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“She locked the door.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than the storm.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“She’s lying.””

Marcus tightened his hold on Nia.

“Enough.””

“But Marcus—”

“Enough.””

He carried his daughter inside.

He wrapped her in a blanket and sat her on the couch.

Only then did he notice the bruised exhaustion in her eyes.

Not from tonight.

From something much longer.

He turned toward Vanessa.

“You left my daughter outside in the rain.””

Vanessa laughed once.

A cold, bitter sound.

“You’re making this into something it isn’t.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Pack your bags.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“You’re leaving tonight.””

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

“You can’t be serious.””

“I have never been more serious.””

Then Caleb stood up.

His voice was quiet.

“Dad…”

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Caleb swallowed.

“This wasn’t the first time.””

Marcus felt something inside him drop.

“What do you mean?””

Caleb slowly walked forward.

“I tried telling you before.””

“Why didn’t you?””

The boy looked toward Vanessa.

Because he was afraid.

Because everyone in that house had been afraid.

Finally, Caleb unlocked his phone.

“I took pictures.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Caleb, don’t.””

But he already opened the folder.

The first picture appeared.

Nia sitting on the floor while a plate of food rested beside her.

The second.

Nia sleeping on a thin blanket in the laundry room.

The third.

Her birthday cake sitting inside a trash can.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Every image felt like a punch.

“How long?””

Caleb whispered.

“Months.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

The woman he had trusted.

The woman he had left his children with.

“How long has this been happening?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand anything.””

Marcus took the phone.

“I understand enough.””

He continued scrolling.

Then he reached the final picture.

The one Caleb had taken minutes ago.

Nia outside.

Vanessa closing the curtains.

Marcus looked up.

His voice was almost a whisper.

“What else don’t I know?””

May you like

Nobody answered.

And that frightened him more than anything.
