Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Closet
Marcus spent the next hour trying to understand how he had missed everything.
That was the question that kept attacking him.
How could a father see his child every day and not see her suffering?
Nia sat wrapped in a blanket beside him.
Every time Marcus looked at her, he saw another moment he had ignored.
The quietness.
The hesitation.
The way she always apologized before speaking.
He turned toward her.
“Baby.””
Nia looked up.
“I need you to tell me the truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Because she said you wouldn’t believe me.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What else did she say?””
Nia looked toward Vanessa.
The woman immediately shook her head.
“Don’t listen to this.””
Marcus’s voice became firm.
“Let her talk.””
Nia swallowed.
“She said I wasn’t really family.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“She said you only kept me because you felt sorry for me.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is not what I said.””
Nia flinched.
Marcus noticed.
And that one small movement told him everything.
He stood between them.
“Do not scare her.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I have sacrificed everything for this family.””
Marcus looked at the photographs.
“Sacrifice doesn’t look like this.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“She has manipulated you.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“My daughter has been trying to survive you.””
The room went silent.
Then Nia slowly stood.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Can I show you something?””
She walked down the hallway.
Marcus followed.
She stopped outside her bedroom.
The room looked normal.
Too normal.
Until she opened the closet.
Inside was a suitcase.
Packed.
Marcus stared.
“What is this?””
Nia looked down.
“She told me to pack.””
His heart sank.
“When?””
“A few days ago.””
He opened the suitcase.
Inside were clothes.
School books.
Her favorite stuffed animal.
The little bracelet her mother had given her before she died.
Everything important to her.
Everything she thought she might lose.
Then Marcus found a folded piece of paper in the side pocket.
He opened it.
It was a checklist.
*Nia’s clothes. School items.*
*Personal belongings.*
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Eight words.
*Everything must be ready before Marcus gets home.*
Marcus stared at the handwriting.
Vanessa’s handwriting.
He walked back into the living room holding the paper.
“Where were you sending her?””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“I wasn’t sending her anywhere.””
“Then why was this packed?””
“She was going to your sister’s.””
Marcus laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“My sister?””
“Yes.””
“You never called my sister.””
“She would understand.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“No. She wouldn’t.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was when Caleb spoke.
“Dad.””
Marcus turned.
“There’s something else.””
Caleb opened another picture.
It was a screenshot.
A message conversation.
Marcus read it.
His expression changed.
The message contained their address.
A pickup time.
And instructions.
His hand tightened around the phone.
“Who was supposed to pick her up?””
Vanessa remained silent.
Marcus looked at her.
“Answer me.””
Finally, she whispered:
“She was never supposed to come back.””
Nia gasped.
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Then at his wife.
And for the first time, he realized this wasn’t just cruelty.
It was a plan.
But before he could ask another question, Marcus’s phone rang.
The number was unknown.
He answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Is this Marcus Reed?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
There was a pause.
Then the man said:
“I’m calling about your daughter’s scheduled transfer.””
Marcus’s blood ran cold.
“Transfer to where?””
The man hesitated.
Then answered:
“According to the paperwork… your daughter was supposed to be removed from your home tonight.””
Marcus looked slowly at Vanessa.
“Who filed this?””
The man took a breath.
May you like
Then said a name.
A name Marcus never expected.
