Chapter 5: The Brother Behind The Betrayal
Marcus didn’t move.
For a few seconds, nobody in the room did.
The man standing in the doorway looked exactly the same as he always had.
Same expensive jacket.
Same calm expression.
Same confident posture.
But Marcus no longer saw his brother.
He saw the name on the paperwork.
He saw the signature.
He saw the person who had helped someone plan to take his daughter away.
“Daniel.””
The name came out like a warning.
Daniel Reed stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“I knew you’d be angry.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because anger didn’t even begin to describe what he felt.
“You knew?””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
Then back at Marcus.
“I knew you would find out eventually.””
Nia moved closer to her father.
Marcus immediately noticed.
She was afraid of Daniel too.
That realization made his stomach twist.
“Why is my brother’s name on documents to remove my daughter from my home?””
Daniel sighed.
“You’re looking at this the wrong way.””
Marcus stared at him.
“My twelve-year-old daughter was locked outside in the rain.””
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“I know.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“And you still came here to defend her?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“No. I came here because things have gone too far.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You said you would handle it.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Marcus stepped backward.
“You both planned this.””
Daniel raised his hands.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was sharp.
“For months, I trusted my family to protect my children. And you two were having conversations behind my back.””
Daniel looked at Nia.
“This isn’t about hurting her.””
Marcus followed his gaze.
“Then what is it about?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation told Marcus everything.
“It’s about money, isn’t it?””
Nobody answered.
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
Marcus walked toward the table and picked up the folder.
“You forged my signature.””
Daniel looked down.
“I didn’t forge anything.””
Marcus held up the document.
“This says I approved a temporary guardianship arrangement.””
“Yes.””
“I never approved it.””
Daniel exhaled.
“You would have.””
Marcus stared.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“You’ve always been too emotional when it comes to her.””
Nia’s face fell.
Marcus noticed.
“She’s not a problem to solve.””
Daniel looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She gave him a small nod.
And Marcus saw it.
The agreement.
The teamwork.
They had rehearsed this conversation.
Daniel finally spoke.
“You’ve been absent for years.””
Marcus froze.
The words hurt because there was some truth buried inside them.
“I worked to provide for this family.””
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“You provided money.””
He looked at Nia.
“But who was actually raising her?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“Every business trip. Every late night. Every weekend you missed.””
Vanessa stepped in.
“I was the one dealing with everything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“By humiliating her?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“She was impossible.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She was a child.””
Daniel sighed.
“This is exactly what I mean. You don’t want to hear anything that makes you uncomfortable.””
Marcus stared at his brother.
“Did you tell Vanessa to do this?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“Did you?””
Finally, Daniel said:
“I told her she needed a solution.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“A solution.””
“Yes.””
“To my daughter?””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“You called my daughter a problem.””
Daniel looked back.
“I called the situation a problem.””
“No.””
Marcus pointed toward the hallway.
“The situation was that a little girl was being abused in my house.””
The word hung in the air.
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“Abused? That’s ridiculous.””
Marcus turned.
“Then why was she sleeping on the laundry room floor?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew about that too.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
Nia covered her mouth.
A quiet sob escaped.
Marcus immediately went to her.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked up.
“You didn’t know.””
Those four words hurt him more than anything.
Because she wasn’t blaming him.
She was protecting him.
Marcus held her hand.
“I should have.””
Behind them, Daniel spoke softly.
“There’s something else.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked serious now.
“I didn’t know she was locking her outside.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He ignored her.
“I knew Vanessa wanted Nia moved. I knew she wanted custody changed.””
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“But?””
Daniel swallowed.
“But I didn’t know how far she had gone.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re really going to turn on me now?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn’t agree to this.””
Marcus stared at both of them.
The betrayal was worse because it kept growing.
Then Daniel placed another folder on the table.
“What is that?””
“Evidence.””
Marcus didn’t touch it.
“Why would you have evidence?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I started realizing Vanessa wasn’t telling me everything.””
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Voice recordings.
One message immediately caught his attention.
It was from Vanessa.
*Once Marcus signs the papers, Nia will be out of the house.*
Marcus felt his hand tighten.
Another message followed.
*After that, everything goes back to normal.*
Normal.
That word felt disgusting.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What did you mean by everything?””
Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
Marcus turned another page.
And then he saw a name.
A name connected to a person he trusted.
Someone who had been involved from the beginning.
His heart stopped.
Because Daniel wasn’t the only person helping Vanessa.
There was someone else.
Someone inside Marcus’s own company.
May you like
Someone who had access to everything.
And that person had been waiting for Marcus to fail.
