Chapter 6: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Know

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through my ears.
Marcus repeated my name.
"Vanessa?""
I pressed the phone against my cheek.
"What did Olivia tell you?""
"She told me that Daniel Whitmore is Ethan's biological father.""
I closed my eyes.
"Marcus, I—"
"Don't.""
His voice was sharp.
"Don't tell me you knew nothing about this.""
"I only found out today.""
"Today?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did Daniel tell the police that you had known for months?""
My stomach dropped.
"He said that?""
"He also said you helped him obtain documents connected to Catherine's medical history.""
I looked at Rebecca.
She was watching me carefully.
"Marcus, please. I need to explain.""
"Come home.""
"Why?""
"Because I want to hear the truth from your mouth.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Rebecca gently took the phone from my hand.
"Don't go back there alone.""
"I have to.""
"No, you don't.""
"Marcus thinks I knew Ethan wasn't his son.""
"Did you?""
I shook my head.
"Not until tonight.""
Rebecca studied my face.
"Then why are you so afraid?""
I looked down at the photograph inside my handbag.
Because Daniel hadn't told me the entire truth.
And I was beginning to suspect that my marriage had been built around a secret much bigger than money.
When I arrived at the Cole residence, the front door was unlocked.
Marcus stood in the living room.
Ethan sat on the sofa, his injured lip covered with a small medical dressing.
Olivia was beside him.
A folder lay on the coffee table.
Marcus didn't offer me a greeting.
"Sit down.""
I looked at Ethan.
He refused to meet my eyes.
I sat opposite them.
Marcus placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Catherine holding a newborn baby.
Ethan.
Beside her stood Daniel.
His hand rested on her shoulder.
Marcus tapped the photograph.
"Do you recognize this man?""
"Yes.""
"How long have you known him?""
"I met him before I married you.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"How long?""
"Several months.""
"Why?""
"He was helping me with some legal matters.""
"What legal matters?""
I hesitated.
"Personal financial matters.""
Marcus gave a bitter laugh.
"Of course.""
He opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
I recognized the formatting immediately.
Daniel's old law firm.
Marcus removed the first page.
"Read this.""
I looked down.
The email was dated seven months before my wedding.
*From: Daniel Whitmore*
*Subject: The Cole Marriage*
The message was short.
Vanessa,
Marcus has agreed to meet you again next week. I believe this is our best opportunity to resolve the outstanding matter. Remember, his emotional attachment to Catherine's memory makes him vulnerable to certain suggestions.
Do not discuss the old medical records until the marriage is finalized.
I felt my face drain of color.
Marcus watched me.
"What outstanding matter?""
I looked up.
"Daniel wrote that?""
"Yes.""
"I don't know what he meant.""
Marcus placed another email beside it.
This one was from me.
My own name appeared in the sender line.
Daniel,
I understand. But what happens if Marcus discovers why we met?
I cannot risk losing everything.
Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
I remembered writing that message.
But not the context.
It had been a difficult period in my life. Daniel had told me he was protecting my interests.
I had believed him.
Marcus leaned forward.
"What were you afraid of?""
I looked at him.
"I was afraid of being abandoned.""
"By whom?""
I didn't answer.
He pushed another document toward me.
It was a copy of Ethan's original birth registration.
Daniel Whitmore's name appeared in a section marked biological father.
Marcus stared at the paper.
"Seven years ago, Catherine told me Ethan was mine.""
His voice cracked.
"I was there when he was born. I held him. I brought him home. I stayed awake for nights when he had a fever.""
Ethan looked down.
Marcus continued.
"Every birthday, every school event, every football game. I was there.""
Ethan finally raised his eyes.
"You're still my dad.""
Marcus looked at him.
The pain in his expression was unbearable.
"Am I?""
Ethan swallowed.
"You raised me.""
Marcus covered his face with one hand.
Olivia moved closer.
"Marcus, don't do this.""
He shook his head.
"I need to understand.""
He looked at me again.
"Did Daniel tell you that Ethan wasn't mine?""
I hesitated.
"No.""
Marcus slammed his hand against the table.
"Stop lying!""
I flinched.
He stood.
"Every time I ask you a question, you give me another half-truth. I'm done.""
I began crying.
"Marcus, I didn't know about Ethan. I swear.""
"Then explain the emails.""
"I thought Daniel was helping me.""
"With what?""
I stared at the floor.
"With my financial security.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Your financial security?""
He pointed toward the staircase.
"You had access to my house, my accounts, my private documents, and my family. What else did you want?""
I looked at him.
"I wanted you to love me.""
The room went silent.
For the first time, I said something that wasn't part of a carefully prepared explanation.
Marcus stared at me.
"Did you ever love me?""
I couldn't answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
I had loved the way he looked at me.
I had loved the life he provided.
I had loved waking up in a beautiful house, wearing expensive clothes, and knowing that people envied me.
But Marcus himself?
I wasn't sure anymore.
Ethan suddenly stood.
"Can we stop pretending this is only about Vanessa?""
Marcus turned toward him.
"What do you mean?""
Ethan picked up the birth registration.
"Daniel might be my biological father, but he wasn't the one who raised me. You were.""
Marcus looked away.
Ethan continued.
"And if you want to know why Mom never told you, maybe you should ask Olivia.""
Olivia froze.
Marcus turned slowly.
"What?""
Ethan looked at his aunt.
"You told me you knew about the DNA test.""
Olivia closed her eyes.
"Not now, Ethan.""
"No. Now.""
Marcus looked between them.
"What DNA test?""
Olivia stood.
"Marcus, please.""
"What DNA test?""
Ethan took a folded envelope from his pocket.
"I found this in Aunt Olivia's safe.""
Olivia reached for it.
"Ethan, give that to me.""
He stepped backward.
"Why?""
"Because you don't understand what you're holding.""
Marcus extended his hand.
"Give it to me.""
Ethan handed him the envelope.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a laboratory report dated six months after Ethan's birth.
The result was unmistakable.
The probability that Marcus Cole was Ethan's biological father was less than one percent.
Marcus stared at the document.
His lips parted.
"Who ordered this?""
Olivia sat down slowly.
"I did.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Olivia's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Catherine asked me to.""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
"She came to me after Ethan was born. She was terrified.""
"Of what?""
"Of Daniel.""
The room fell silent.
Olivia continued.
"Catherine told me she had been seeing Daniel before she married you. She said Daniel had become controlling. He wanted her to leave you and take Ethan away.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because Daniel threatened to expose everything.""
"Expose what?""
Olivia looked at Ethan.
"That Ethan wasn't yours.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"That doesn't explain why she asked you to arrange a DNA test.""
Olivia took a shaky breath.
"Because she wanted proof before confronting Daniel.""
Ethan looked at his aunt.
"Did Mom know I wasn't Dad's biological son?""
"Yes.""
"Did Dad know?""
"No.""
Marcus sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
"Seven years.""
He stared at the floor.
"Seven years, Olivia. You knew for seven years.""
Olivia began crying.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"But you didn't.""
"I was protecting Catherine's wishes.""
Marcus looked up.
"She's gone. Her wishes don't matter anymore.""
Olivia wiped her eyes.
"There's something else.""
Marcus gave a hollow laugh.
"Of course there is.""
Olivia reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because Catherine gave it to me the night before she died.""
Marcus stared at it.
"What's inside?""
"A letter.""
She handed it to him.
His fingers trembled as he unfolded the paper.
He read the first few lines.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
He read it again.
Ethan moved closer.
"What does it say?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Olivia looked at me.
"Read the last paragraph, Marcus.""
He swallowed.
Then, in a broken voice, he read aloud.
Marcus, if anything happens to me, do not trust Daniel. But there is one person you must never blame. Ethan is innocent. He is your son in every way that matters, even if the blood says otherwise.
Marcus's eyes filled.
He continued.
I made a terrible mistake before our marriage, and Daniel has used it to control me ever since. He knows what happened the night I discovered the truth about his business dealings.
Marcus stopped.
"What business dealings?""
Olivia looked toward the window.
"I don't know.""
Marcus looked at the letter again.
The final line was written in different handwriting.
It was darker, pressed harder into the paper.
If Daniel ever returns, ask him what happened to the original company records.
Marcus looked up.
"What original records?""
Olivia shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Then Ethan noticed something.
"There are two signatures.""
He pointed toward the bottom of the letter.
Catherine's signature appeared first.
Beneath it was another name.
*Olivia Cole.*
Marcus looked at his sister.
"You signed this?""
Olivia nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Catherine made me promise to keep the letter safe.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Then why didn't you give it to me when she died?""
Olivia looked at me.
"Because someone took the original documents from her house before I could.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Marcus followed her gaze.
"Vanessa?""
Olivia shook her head.
"No.""
She reached into her handbag again.
This time, she pulled out a small photograph.
It showed a woman standing outside a hospital.
A younger Olivia.
And beside her stood a man holding a leather briefcase.
Daniel.
Marcus stared at the picture.
"When was this taken?""
"The night Catherine died.""
Ethan leaned closer.
"Why were you with Daniel?""
Olivia's face crumpled.
"Because he told me Catherine had been in an accident. He said he needed my help identifying her belongings.""
Marcus stood.
"You went to the hospital?""
Olivia nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Olivia looked at the photograph.
Then she spoke the words that changed everything.
"Because Catherine wasn't dead when I arrived.""
Marcus froze.
Ethan stopped breathing.
I felt the room go completely silent.
Marcus stared at his sister.
"What did you just say?""
Olivia began to cry.
"She was alive. She was conscious. She was asking for you.""
Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.
"Then why did you tell me she died before I got there?""
Olivia covered her mouth.
"Because Daniel said she would never recover.""
Marcus's voice rose.
"That isn't an answer!""
Olivia looked at him through her tears.
"Because he told me that if you came to the hospital, he would expose the truth about Ethan and destroy your family.""
Ethan took a step backward.
I looked at Olivia.
"Did Catherine die that night?""
Olivia shook her head.
"No.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Then where is she?""
Olivia lowered her head.
"I don't know.""
A long silence followed.
Then she reached into her handbag and placed one final document on the table.
It was a hospital discharge record.
The date was seven years earlier.
The patient's name was Catherine Cole.
The discharge destination was listed as a private residential facility.
And the person who had signed the transfer authorization was not Daniel.
It was Marcus.
Marcus stared at the signature.
His face turned white.
"I never signed this.""
Olivia looked at him.
"I know.""
Ethan slowly picked up the document.
Then he turned it over.
On the back was a handwritten address.
A facility in upstate New York.
And beneath it, a note in Catherine's handwriting:
*If Ethan ever asks about me, tell him I never stopped waiting.*
Ethan looked at his father.
"She's alive?""
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
Weak.
Older.
But unmistakably emotional.
"Marcus?""
His hand began trembling.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then the voice whispered:
"It's Catherine.""
Marcus dropped into the nearest chair.
Ethan covered his mouth.
And I stood frozen beside the table, realizing that the woman I had believed was dead might still be alive.
But the next words Catherine spoke made the entire room go cold.
"Marcus, don't trust Olivia. She knows what really happened to me.""
The call ended.
Olivia began shaking her head.
"No...""
Marcus slowly looked at his sister.
Then at Ethan.
Then at me.
May you like
And for the first time that night, he asked a question nobody had expected.
"How many people in this family have been lying to me?""
