Chapter 1: The Recording That Changed Everything

The blue loading circle spun on Marcus's phone.

Once.

Twice.

Then the screen went black.

I felt my fingers tighten around his sleeve.

"Marcus, sweetheart, maybe we should do this tomorrow," I whispered.

"Ethan is clearly upset, and I don't want this to become another family argument.""

Ethan stood near the dining room wall, one hand pressed against his bleeding lip.

"Funny," he said quietly.

"You weren't worried about family arguments when you were tearing your own dress.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"Watch your mouth.""

Ethan shook his head.

"No, Dad. For once, I want you to watch something else.""

The security application finally opened.

A thumbnail appeared on the screen, showing the dining room from above. The timestamp read 8:42 PM.

Marcus tapped PLAY.

My stomach dropped.

The recording began with Ethan standing near the dining table. The three hundred thousand dollars sat neatly arranged between us.

Then my own voice came through the speakers.

"Three hundred thousand dollars. It's all here.""

Ethan's recorded voice followed.

"Why are you giving me this?""

"Because I wanted to give you a chance.""

"A chance to do what?""

"Take the money and disappear.""

Marcus stopped moving.

I quickly reached for his arm.

"Darling, that's not—"

He raised one finger.

"Wait.""

On the screen, Ethan stepped away from the money.

Then the recording captured me moving toward him.

Every word was clear.

Every movement was visible.

"Your father doesn't need to know everything," my recorded voice said.

Ethan answered, "Then I'm calling him.""

The camera showed me reaching for his phone.

It showed Ethan pulling away.

And then came the moment that made my blood run cold.

The recording showed me looking directly toward the camera.

I knew exactly where it was.

For half a second, my expression changed.

The frightened wife disappeared.

A cold, calculating woman stared into the lens.

Then I grabbed my dress.

The fabric ripped.

Marcus's hand slowly lowered.

On the screen, I knocked over the glass myself.

I slapped my own cheek.

I threw the money across the floor.

And then I screamed.

"Help! Somebody help me!""

The room fell silent.

The recording continued.

Marcus watched himself rush into the dining room. He watched me hide against his shoulder. He watched his own fist strike Ethan across the face.

Then the video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Marcus looked at the phone.

Then at me.

"Vanessa.""

I swallowed.

"Yes, darling?""

"Tell me that isn't what I think it is.""

I forced a shaky laugh.

"You're taking this out of context.""

Ethan let out a bitter laugh.

"Out of context? She literally attacked herself.""

"Shut up!"" Marcus snapped.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Why? Because the video doesn't match her story?""

Marcus looked at me again.

"Did you tear your own dress?""

I lowered my eyes.

"I was scared.""

"Did you hit yourself?""

"I was trying to get away from him.""

"Did you throw the money?""

"Marcus, please. You're frightening me.""

He stared at me.

For the first time in eighteen months, I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

I stepped closer and touched his chest.

"You know how difficult Ethan has been since we got married. He's never accepted me. He has called me names, insulted me, and made this house miserable. I was afraid he would hurt me.""

Ethan shook his head.

"She's doing it again.""

Marcus raised his voice.

"Enough!""

I seized the opportunity.

"See? This is what I live with every day. You weren't here when he made those comments. You weren't here when he threatened to make me leave.""

Ethan looked at his father.

"Ask her why she had three hundred thousand dollars ready.""

Marcus glanced at the scattered cash.

"Vanessa?""

I took a breath.

"That's my personal money.""

"Where did you get it?""

"My savings.""

"Three hundred thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

Ethan laughed.

"That's interesting.""

I glared at him.

"What?""

He wiped the blood from his lip.

"Because you told me it came from Dad's private account.""

Marcus turned sharply.

"What?""

Ethan pointed toward the table.

"She said it was money Dad had transferred to her. She said if I accepted it and left, nobody would have to know.""

I felt the room tilt.

"That's a lie!""

"Then let's check the account.""

Marcus didn't answer.

I grabbed his hand.

"Darling, please. You're letting him manipulate you.""

He pulled his hand away.

It was a small movement.

But it hurt more than I expected.

"Don't touch me right now," he said.

I stared at him.

Marcus walked to the dining table and picked up one of the bundles.

The bank straps were still attached.

He examined the labels.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"Vanessa, where did you get this cash?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

He looked at the first bundle again.

"These are from my company's bank.""

My heart began pounding.

Ethan nodded.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"How do you know?""

"Because I've seen those exact bank straps before. I work in the finance department, Dad. Remember?""

I knew Ethan worked at his father's company.

I also knew he had access to certain financial records.

What I hadn't expected was that he would recognize the cash.

Marcus placed the bundle on the table.

"Vanessa, explain.""

I forced myself to breathe.

"Maybe someone put it there. Maybe Ethan brought it into the house.""

Ethan stared at me.

"Really?""

"You're the one who came downstairs!""

"After you called me here!""

Marcus looked between us.

"Called him?""

Ethan nodded.

"She texted me this afternoon. She said she wanted to talk privately about something important.""

I laughed nervously.

"That's not what happened.""

Ethan pulled his phone from his pocket.

"Would you like to see the messages?""

Marcus extended his hand.

"Give it to me.""

Ethan unlocked his phone and handed it over.

Marcus read the conversation.

His expression became increasingly troubled.

Then he stopped at one message.

*Vanessa: Come to the dining room at 8:30. Don't tell your father. I have something that could change everything for you.*

Another message followed.

*Ethan: What is it?*

*Vanessa: Something about the company. Bring your ID.*

Marcus looked up.

"Why did you tell him to bring his ID?""

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ethan answered for me.

"Because she wanted me to sign something.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"What?""

Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found it on the dining table before she started screaming.""

He handed it to his father.

Marcus unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the document.

Then his face went completely still.

It was a legal agreement.

A statement acknowledging that Ethan had voluntarily accepted three hundred thousand dollars in exchange for leaving the family home and permanently giving up any claims against his father's estate.

At the bottom was a blank signature line.

Marcus looked at me.

"You wanted my son to sign away his inheritance?""

I shook my head.

"No. That's not what it means.""

"Then what does it mean?""

"I was trying to protect our marriage.""

"By paying my son to disappear?""

"He has been making our lives miserable!""

Marcus slammed the document onto the table.

"He's my son!""

The words echoed through the dining room.

For a moment, I saw the man I had married eighteen months earlier.

The powerful businessman who had promised to give me everything.

But now he looked at me as though he had never seen my face before.

Ethan slowly approached the table.

"Dad, there's something else.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"What else?""

"The money isn't the only thing she brought here tonight.""

Ethan reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small black flash drive.

I recognized it immediately.

My breath caught.

Marcus noticed.

"What is that?""

Ethan placed the flash drive beside the envelope.

"Something I found in the company's financial records.""

I stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Both men looked at me.

Ethan's voice was quiet.

"Why not, Vanessa?""

I stared at the flash drive.

Because I knew what was on it.

And if Marcus watched it, the security camera would be the least of my problems.

Ethan turned to his father.

"That money isn't just company cash. It's connected to a missing account.""

Marcus frowned.

"What account?""

May you like

Ethan looked directly at me.

"The one Vanessa opened under her maiden name.""
