Chapter 4: The Photograph That Exposed a Family Secret

"Mrs. Cole, we need you downstairs.""
The police officer's voice carried through the bedroom door.
I shoved the photograph into my handbag and quickly wiped my eyes.
For a moment, I considered climbing through the balcony window.
But the bedroom was on the second floor, and the balcony overlooked a stone patio.
One wrong step could leave me with a broken leg.
I wasn't going to risk that.
Instead, I took a deep breath, straightened my torn dress, and walked downstairs.
Two police officers stood in the entrance hall. Marcus was beside them, his navy suit jacket still buttoned, his expression unreadable.
Ethan stood behind him.
His lip was swollen.
When he saw me, he looked away.
"Mrs. Cole?"" the older officer asked.
"Yes.""
"I'm Detective Harris. This is Officer Miller. We'd like to ask you some questions concerning several financial transactions involving your husband's company.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Darling, what is this?""
He didn't answer.
Detective Harris opened a notebook.
"Do you know why we're here?""
"Not really.""
"Have you recently transferred money from any accounts belonging to Cole Industries?""
"No.""
"Have you authorized transfers totaling approximately one million eight hundred thousand dollars?""
My stomach tightened.
"No.""
He glanced at his notes.
"Do you recognize the name Vanessa Reed?""
I forced a confused expression.
"That's my maiden name.""
"An account was opened under that name. Several transfers from your husband's company were deposited into it.""
"I didn't open that account.""
"Do you have evidence supporting that statement?""
I looked toward Marcus.
"He's my husband. Surely he can explain that I have nothing to do with his company's finances.""
Marcus finally spoke.
"Don't bring me into this.""
I stared at him.
"Marcus?""
He looked directly at Detective Harris.
"I want to cooperate fully.""
Something inside me cracked.
For eighteen months, I had been the woman he called his greatest blessing.
Now he was standing beside two police officers as if I were a stranger.
Detective Harris continued.
"Mrs. Cole, we also need to discuss a medication prescription issued under your husband's name.""
I swallowed.
"I don't know anything about that.""
"Your husband's medical provider has reported a potentially unauthorized prescription.""
"I was only trying to help him.""
"Did you obtain medication for him?""
"I purchased some supplements.""
"Under what name?""
I hesitated.
"Mine.""
"Did you tell your husband what was in them?""
I looked at Marcus.
He was watching me.
I wanted him to interrupt.
To tell the officers that I had made a mistake, that I was confused, that I was his wife.
But he said nothing.
"Mrs. Cole?"" Detective Harris repeated.
"I don't remember.""
The detective closed his notebook.
"All right. We'd like you to accompany us to the station for a formal interview.""
I immediately stepped backward.
"Am I under arrest?""
"At this stage, we're requesting your cooperation.""
"Then I want a lawyer.""
"Of course.""
I looked at Marcus.
"You're going to let them take me?""
His expression remained cold.
"You should answer their questions.""
"After everything I've done for you?""
He finally stepped closer.
"Everything you've done for me?""
I lowered my voice.
"Marcus, please.""
He glanced at the torn dress.
"Did you really think I wouldn't discover the truth?""
I felt tears gathering.
"I made mistakes.""
He shook his head.
"That's not what I'm asking.""
Then he turned away.
Detective Harris gestured toward the entrance.
I reached for my handbag.
As I passed Ethan, he spoke quietly.
"Where's the photograph?""
My heart stopped.
I looked at him.
"What photograph?""
"The one you were holding upstairs.""
I forced a laugh.
"You've become obsessed with me.""
Ethan leaned closer.
"Whatever you're hiding, I hope it's worth what you did to my father.""
I continued walking.
But before I reached the door, my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
*Unknown Number: Do not let them see the photograph. The man in it knows what happened to your husband's first wife.*
I quickly locked my screen.
Then I stepped outside.
The November air felt colder than it had any right to.
At the police station, Detective Harris placed a glass of water in front of me.
My attorney, whom I had contacted before leaving the house, had not yet arrived.
I refused to answer anything without him.
The detective seemed patient.
"Mrs. Cole, I understand this is stressful.""
I didn't respond.
He placed several photographs on the table.
The first showed the three hundred thousand dollars scattered across the dining room floor.
The second showed the torn red dress.
The third showed the security camera recording.
I looked away.
"Your husband has provided the original footage," he said.
"Then you already know what happened.""
"We know what the camera recorded. We still need to understand why.""
I folded my arms.
"I was frightened.""
"Of what?""
"Ethan.""
"Why?""
"He has never accepted me.""
Detective Harris studied me.
"Did he threaten you?""
"Many times.""
"Do you have messages?""
I hesitated.
"No.""
"Witnesses?""
"Not that I can think of.""
He leaned back.
"Mrs. Cole, the recording shows you offering Ethan money in exchange for leaving the house. It also shows you damaging your own dress and striking yourself.""
I looked at him.
"Are you accusing me of lying?""
"I'm asking you to explain the footage.""
"I was trying to protect myself.""
"From what?""
I remained silent.
The detective removed another document from his folder.
"This is a bank transfer authorization.""
I looked down.
The account number was familiar.
My stomach tightened.
"Do you recognize it?""
"No.""
"Your name appears as the authorized recipient.""
"Anyone could have used my name.""
"That's possible. But the account was accessed using a device registered to your home.""
I said nothing.
Then the door opened.
A woman in a dark gray suit entered.
"Vanessa?""
I looked up.
My attorney, Rebecca Stone, had arrived.
She placed her briefcase on the table.
"Detective, I'd like to speak with my client privately.""
Harris nodded.
"Of course.""
He collected the documents and left.
Rebecca sat opposite me.
"Tell me everything.""
I lowered my voice.
"There's something you need to know.""
She opened her notebook.
"What?""
I took the photograph from my handbag.
Her expression changed immediately.
"Where did you get this?""
"Someone sent it to me.""
She examined it carefully.
"Do you recognize the man?""
"Yes.""
"Who is he?""
I hesitated.
"His name is Daniel Whitmore.""
Rebecca looked up sharply.
"Marcus's former attorney?""
"Yes.""
She studied the photograph again.
"And the woman?""
"Marcus's first wife. Catherine.""
Rebecca turned the photograph over.
Her eyes stopped at the handwritten date.
"That's Ethan's birthday.""
I nodded.
"Do you think Daniel is Ethan's father?""
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Then she placed the photograph on the table.
"Vanessa, why would someone send you this?""
I told her about the phone call.
About the unknown man.
About the warning not to reveal his identity.
Rebecca listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she leaned back.
"Did you know Daniel before you married Marcus?""
I looked down.
"Yes.""
"How?""
"We met at a charity event.""
"Before or after your relationship with Marcus began?""
I hesitated.
"Before.""
Rebecca's expression hardened.
"Vanessa, I need you to be completely honest with me. If Daniel was involved in the financial transactions, your situation is more complicated than you think.""
I stared at her.
"Are you saying he used me?""
"I'm saying you need to consider that possibility.""
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time, the sender included a name.
*Ask Daniel why Catherine died.*
I felt my fingers go numb.
Rebecca noticed.
"What is it?""
I handed her the phone.
She read the message.
Then she looked at me.
"Whoever sent this knows more than they're telling you.""
Before I could answer, her phone rang.
She checked the screen.
"One moment.""
She answered.
"Rebecca Stone.""
A pause.
Then her face changed.
"Are you certain?""
Another pause.
"Where?""
She stood.
"Don't let him leave. I'm coming.""
She ended the call.
I stared at her.
"What happened?""
She closed her briefcase.
"Daniel Whitmore has just been detained.""
My heart stopped.
"Why?""
Rebecca looked at the photograph.
"Because the police found something in his office.""
"What?""
She took a breath.
"A copy of Catherine Cole's original medical file.""
May you like
Then she added something that made my blood run cold.
"And it contains a prescription bearing your signature.""
