Chapter 9: The Secret Between Sisters
For three days, I tried to ignore Vanessa’s final words.
I told myself they were another manipulation.
Another attempt to get inside my head.
That was what Vanessa did best.
She planted doubts.
She waited for them to grow.
But there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.
Claire’s silence.
She had known Emily.
She had protected Lily.
She had helped me uncover the truth.
But when Vanessa mentioned her name, Claire’s face on the phone had changed.
Not fear.
Guilt.
And guilt only comes from one place.
Knowing something you were never supposed to hide.
I called her that night.
She answered after the first ring.
“Michael.””
“You know.””
Silence.
I sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where Lily once held a piece of bread and apologized for being hungry.
“What did Vanessa tell you?””
“That you’re hiding something about Emily’s death.””
Claire didn’t respond.
And that was my answer.
“Claire.””
She exhaled.
“I was hoping you would never have to know.””
My chest tightened.
“Know what?””
For a long moment, there was only silence.
Then she said:
“Emily didn’t die because of her illness.””
My hand went numb.
“What?””
“She had complications.””
“You told me she was getting better.””
“She was.””
“Then what happened?””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“She found out Vanessa had been lying.””
I closed my eyes.
“About what?””
“About you.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“Explain.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“After Emily got sick, Vanessa convinced her that you had moved on.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“She showed Emily fake messages.””
My stomach dropped.
“What messages?””
“Texts pretending they were from you.””
I stared at the wall.
“She made Emily believe I didn’t want Lily?””
“Yes.””
“And Emily believed her?””
“At first.””
Claire paused.
“Because Emily was sick. She was scared. She thought she was protecting Lily from a father who didn’t want her.””
I felt sick.
All these years.
I had believed I abandoned Emily.
I had believed I failed Lily.
But Vanessa had stolen years from all of us.
“What does this have to do with Emily dying?””
Claire was quiet.
Then she said:
“The night Emily confronted Vanessa, they argued.””
My jaw tightened.
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“Your recording showed that.””
“No.””
Her voice lowered.
“There was another conversation.””
I stood up.
“What conversation?””
“The one after the recording ended.””
My entire body went cold.
“Claire…”
“I wasn’t supposed to hear it.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
I waited.
Then she said:
“Vanessa threatened to take Lily away permanently.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Emily?””
“She told Vanessa she would tell you everything.””
“What did Vanessa say?””
Claire swallowed.
“She said Emily wouldn’t live long enough to do it.””
The room became silent.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Vanessa knew Emily was getting worse.””
“That doesn’t mean—”
“I know.””
Claire’s voice broke.
“I know what it sounds like.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Lily was asleep.
Safe.
Finally safe.
But my mind was somewhere else.
In a hospital room.
With Emily.
Alone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire started crying.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“She threatened you too?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Claire’s answer came quietly.
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was afraid.””
“Of Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
Claire paused.
“But she was more afraid of what would happen to Lily if Vanessa went to prison.””
I sat back down.
Emily.
Even at the end.
Still protecting her daughter.
“She made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
“That I would wait until Lily was old enough to understand.””
I looked at my daughter’s bedroom door.
“She was five.””
“I know.””
“She needed me.””
“I know.””
The pain in Claire’s voice matched my own.
“I failed her.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t.””
“But I let Vanessa stay.””
“So did I.””
The truth was brutal.
Both of us had trusted the wrong person.
Both of us had missed signs.
But there was one difference.
I could still fix something.
Claire sent me the final file that night.
A police report.
One that had never been completed.
Emily had fallen down the hospital stairs.
At the time, everyone assumed it was an accident.
But there was one detail.
A witness.
A nurse who had seen Vanessa leaving the area minutes before.
My hands trembled as I read the report.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Shaking.
“Is this Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Sarah. I was the nurse who treated Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“How did you get my number?””
“Claire gave it to me.””
I stood.
“What do you know?””
The woman was silent.
Then:
“I should have spoken years ago.””
“About what?””
“Your wife.””
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me.””
The nurse whispered:
“Emily didn’t fall.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She was pushed.””
The world went quiet.
Then Sarah said:
“And Michael…”
“Yes?””
“I found something that proves it.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
May you like
Her voice dropped.
“A camera recording.””
