Chapter 6: The Recording

The next morning, I didn’t go to work.

I didn’t care about the missed calls from my supervisor.

I didn’t care about the unfinished projects.

There are moments in life when everything you thought mattered suddenly becomes meaningless.

For me, that moment was sitting at my kitchen table while my daughter ate breakfast.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid someone would take it away.

I watched Lily break a piece of toast into tiny pieces.

“What are you doing?”” I asked.

She looked up.

“Saving some.””

My heart cracked.

“Saving it for what?””

She shrugged.

“In case I’m hungry later.””

I reached across the table.

“You don’t have to save food anymore.””

She looked uncertain.

“Really?””

“Really.””

She stared at me for a few seconds.

Then nodded.

But she still kept one piece hidden in her hand.

Five years old.

And already afraid of tomorrow.

Across the table, Mason sat quietly.

He had barely spoken since everything came out.

I looked at him.

“You did the right thing.””

He shook his head.

“I should’ve told you sooner.””

“You were scared.””

He looked down.

“She told me bad things happen to kids who talk.””

I felt anger rise again.

But I swallowed it.

Because Mason needed a father.

Not another angry adult.

“You protected Lily.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“She protected me too.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Mason looked toward Vanessa’s bedroom.

“Before you married Mom, Lily was the only person who was nice to me.””

I froze.

“She was four.””

“I know.””

He smiled sadly.

“She used to share her toys with me.””

That hurt.

Because my daughter, the child Vanessa called selfish, had spent years being kinder than the adult hurting her.

Around noon, Claire arrived.

I recognized her immediately from old photos.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had carried this secret for too long.

When she saw Lily, tears filled her eyes.

“Oh my God.””

Lily looked confused.

“Who are you?””

Claire knelt down.

“I’m your aunt.””

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

“She’s family.””

Claire opened her arms.

After a moment, Lily walked toward her.

And Claire cried.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

The kind of crying that comes from years of grief.

After Lily went to the living room with Mason, Claire handed me a small device.

“A voice recorder.””

I stared at it.

“When was this recorded?””

“The week before Emily died.””

My fingers tightened.

“What happened?””

Claire looked toward Vanessa’s bedroom.

“She came to the hospital.””

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To convince Emily to sign documents.””

“What documents?””

Claire looked at me.

“Giving up custody.””

I felt sick.

“She was dying.””

“She was scared.””

Claire nodded.

“But she refused.””

I pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Machines.

Footsteps.

Then a woman’s weak voice.

Emily.

“Vanessa, please.””

My entire body froze.

A second voice answered.

Vanessa.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””

“I want Michael to know.””

“No.””

“I want my daughter with her father.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

There was a pause.

Then Emily whispered:

“You lied to him.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“I did what I had to do.””

I stopped breathing.

Emily’s voice shook.

“You stole my child.””

“No.””

“You isolated me.””

“I protected Lily.””

“You’re not protecting her.””

The recording crackled.

Then Emily said the words that made my blood turn cold.

“She will hate you when she knows.””

Vanessa replied:

“She will never know.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

Claire watched me.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She threatened Emily.””

“With what?””

Claire’s face was pale.

“With taking Lily somewhere nobody could find her.””

I stood up.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Michael.””

“No.””

My voice was shaking.

“She doesn’t get to stay in this house.””

Before I reached the bedroom, my phone rang.

It was my lawyer.

I answered.

“Michael, you need to come to my office immediately.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Vanessa filed for emergency custody of Lily.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“She’s claiming you are unstable.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Where Vanessa was standing.

She had heard everything.

And she was smiling.

Then she said:

“You should have asked yourself one question.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She slowly lifted her phone.

“The same question I asked myself years ago.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you do?””

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

“I made sure nobody would believe you.””
