Chapter 8: The Last Lie

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was thinking.

The message bothered me.

Not because it was cruel.

Vanessa was cruel.

I already knew that.

What bothered me was the wording.

Why would she bring up Emily again?

Why now?

Unless there was something she knew that I didn’t.

The next morning, I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Michael?””

“Did Emily ever distrust me?””

There was silence.

Then:

“Why are you asking that?””

“Because Vanessa sent me a message.””

Claire sighed.

“Of course she did.””

“What does that mean?””

“She’s trying to make you doubt yourself.””

“But did Emily?””

“No.””

The answer was instant.

“Emily loved you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why would Vanessa say that?””

“Because she knows your biggest weakness.””

“What?””

“You blame yourself.””

I looked at Lily sleeping on the couch.

And Claire was right.

I had blamed myself for years.

For working too much.

For not seeing.

For trusting.

Then Claire said:

“But there is something you should know.””

“What?””

“Emily did leave you one message.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She recorded a video.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood.

“Claire.””

“She gave it to Vanessa.””

My blood went cold.

“Why would she do that?””

“Because she thought Vanessa would deliver it to you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“She never did.””

“No.””

A pause.

“Michael, I think Vanessa kept it.””

That night, I searched Vanessa’s office again.

This time, I knew what I was looking for.

Something from Emily.

Something she had hidden.

After an hour, I found a small envelope taped beneath the bottom drawer.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a memory card.

And a handwritten note.

Michael,

If you are seeing this, something went wrong.

I knew Vanessa loved Lily.

But I also knew she wanted something from her.

Please remember this:

Lily was never a replacement for anything.

She is her own person.

Love her.

Protect her.

I started crying before I even watched the video.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She looked weak.

But peaceful.

“Michael,” she whispered.

“If you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything myself.””

She paused.

“Vanessa helped me when I was sick.””

I froze.

“She was kind at first.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then she became afraid.””

Emily looked down.

“She was afraid that if I recovered, she would lose Lily.””

The video shook slightly.

“I tried to reassure her.””

A tear moved down Emily’s face.

“But she became angry.””

Then Emily said the sentence that destroyed Vanessa’s final lie.

“Michael, I never asked Vanessa to raise Lily.””

I stopped the video.

Because I finally understood.

Vanessa hadn’t saved Lily.

She had taken her.

I continued watching.

Emily’s voice became weaker.

“She told me Michael would never believe me.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She told me she had already convinced everyone that I was unstable.””

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

Recorded by Emily.

“If anything happens to me, please look at Vanessa.””

I sat there in silence.

The next morning, I gave everything to my lawyer.

The recordings.

The documents.

The video.

Everything.

By afternoon, the judge signed an emergency order.

Vanessa was not allowed near Lily.

When police arrived to deliver the order, Vanessa was calm.

Too calm.

She looked at me.

“You think you won.””

I held Lily’s hand.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“This isn’t over.””

I stepped closer.

“It is.””

She smiled.

And that smile scared me.

Because it wasn’t the smile of someone defeated.

It was the smile of someone who had one last weapon.

“You still don’t know the whole story.””

I froze.

“What story?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“The reason Emily died.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

She leaned closer.

And whispered:

“Ask Claire what she never told you.””

Then the police walked her away.

I watched the car disappear down the street.

And for the first time in weeks, I wondered if Vanessa had just told the truth.

Because Claire had been hiding something.

May you like

And whatever it was…

It involved the woman I thought I had lost years ago.
