Chapter 4: The File Vanessa Hid

I didn’t confront Vanessa immediately.

That was the hardest thing I ever did.

Every part of me wanted to wake her up.

Demand answers.

Scream until the truth came out.

But I had learned something important.

People like Vanessa didn’t reveal the truth when they were angry.

They revealed it when they thought they were still in control.

So I waited.

The next morning, I acted normal.

“Good morning,” she said.

I almost couldn’t believe how calm she sounded.

Like nothing had happened.

Like Lily’s tears meant nothing.

I poured coffee into a cup.

“Morning.””

Vanessa studied me.

“You’re still angry.””

“Yes.””

She looked disappointed.

“I thought you would cool down.””

“I thought you would apologize.””

She looked away.

That told me everything.

No apology was coming.

After breakfast, I took Mason outside.

I sat with him on the porch.

“Who sent the message?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Did you know about Lily’s mother?””

He hesitated.

“Mom told me not to ask.””

“What did she say?””

“That Lily’s mother was a bad person.””

I looked at him.

“And you believed her?””

Mason shrugged.

“I was little.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because he was still little.

Both of them were.

And somehow they had been carrying secrets adults created.

That afternoon, I searched through old documents.

Marriage papers.

Insurance records.

Anything connected to Lily.

Then I found something strange.

A missing page.

A medical document with the corner torn off.

Vanessa had been careful.

Too careful.

I waited until she went grocery shopping.

Then I checked the locked drawer in her office.

The key was hidden under a stack of old magazines.

Inside was a folder.

My hands went cold before I even opened it.

The first page had Lily’s name.

The second page had her mother’s name.

And the third page changed everything.

Lily’s mother had not abandoned her.

She had been in the hospital.

She had been trying to contact me.

There were missed calls.

Messages.

Letters.

All ignored.

Because someone had changed the phone number.

Someone had hidden the information.

Someone had made sure I never knew.

I heard the front door open.

Vanessa was home.

I quickly closed the folder.

She walked into the room.

And she saw it.

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

I stood slowly.

“You knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

“How long?””

Vanessa put the grocery bags down.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

She stared at me.

Then sighed.

“Your life with Lily’s mother was over.””

“That wasn’t your decision.””

“She was sick.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She asked me for help.””

The room became silent.

“And?””

“She knew she couldn’t take care of Lily.””

“So you helped her?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“No.””

The answer was quiet.

Cold.

“I helped myself.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She walked toward the table.

“You loved Lily before you even met me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You talked about her constantly.””

A strange smile appeared.

“And I knew if I became the person raising Lily, you would never leave me.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You used my daughter.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I gave her a home.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You took advantage of a child who had no one.””

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

“You should ask yourself why Lily’s mother trusted me with her.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She didn’t.””

The room went quiet.

“She never wanted Lily with me.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why did you have her?””

Vanessa smiled.

And that smile was the same one she had when Lily held the bread.

The same cold expression.

The same lack of regret.

“Because I made sure nobody else could.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name I hadn’t seen in years.

Lily’s mother’s sister.

I answered.

The first words I heard made my entire body go numb.

“Michael, I’m sorry it took this long to find you.””

I couldn’t speak.

Then she continued:

“Your wife was never supposed to have custody of Lily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was still standing there.

Watching me.

Smiling.

May you like

And then the woman on the phone whispered:

“Because Vanessa was the reason Lily’s mother died.””
