Chapter 9: The Man Whose Blood Ran Through Mine
I read the report three times.
Victor Hale.
The man who had threatened my mother.
The man who had stolen her money.
The man who had tried to destroy Andrew.
The man who had spent years manipulating my family.
My biological father.
“No,” I whispered.
Dad stood.
“Claire, give me the report.””
I pulled it against my chest.
“Is this real?””
He didn't answer.
“Dad!””
He looked at me.
“I don't know.””
I stared at him.
“Were you told?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The room fell silent.
I felt something cold spread through my body.
“You knew?””
“I found out when you were thirteen.””
I stepped backward.
“Eight years ago?””
He nodded.
“Your mother left a letter explaining everything. She asked me to protect you from Victor.””
I shook my head.
“So you knew Victor was my father, and you let me believe Andrew was?””
“I never told you Andrew was your father.””
“You let everyone else tell me!””
Dad's eyes filled.
“I wanted you to have a father who loved you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you thought that meant keeping me ignorant?””
He looked down.
“I was afraid you'd believe you were anything like him.””
I stared at the report.
The man who had threatened my mother.
The man who had destroyed my childhood.
The man whose blood I carried.
I felt sick.
Margaret approached slowly.
“Claire, we need to verify this report independently.””
I nodded.
“Do it.””
Thomas took the document.
He examined the laboratory seal.
Then he looked at Margaret.
“This is from the original investigation.””
“You recognize it?””
“Yes.””
Margaret sat down.
“Then we need to know why it was hidden.””
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“Because Elena wanted it hidden.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Victor was dangerous. She believed that if he knew you were his daughter, he'd use you to control Andrew and take the company.””
I stared.
“But he already knew about me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he pretend not to?””
Dad looked at the floor.
“Because he wanted you to come to him willingly.””
The words chilled me.
Margaret's phone rang.
She answered and listened.
Then she slowly lowered it.
“What happened?”” I asked.
“Victor has requested a meeting.””
“With whom?””
“With you.””
I laughed.
“Absolutely not.””
Margaret nodded.
“I agree.””
But Dad stood.
“He needs to be questioned about Elena's death.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Then let the police question him.””
Dad turned toward me.
“Claire, there's something else.””
I stared.
“What now?””
He removed a small envelope from his jacket.
It was yellowed with age.
My mother's handwriting was on the front.
For Claire, when she learns who her biological father is.
I took it.
Inside was a letter.
My darling Claire,
If you are reading this, then Victor's identity has finally been revealed to you.
I wish I could have told you myself.
Victor was not the man I thought he was when we met. He was charming, intelligent, and generous. He made me believe he wanted a family.
When I became pregnant, he promised he would marry me.
But when he discovered that I knew about his financial crimes, he threatened to take you away.
I refused.
He disappeared for months. When he returned, he wanted access to my company and my accounts.
I said no.
He told me that one day you would come looking for him.
If that day ever comes, remember this: DNA is not a promise of love. Blood is not a guarantee of loyalty.
The man who raises you is your father if he earns that place. The man who gave you life is simply the beginning of your story.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
My mother had known.
She'd known that one day I'd discover the truth.
And she'd left me something else.
A final paragraph.
There is one person who knows what happened to me that night. He has been protecting you from a distance. His name is Thomas Reed.
I looked up.
Thomas was standing by the window.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.
He lowered his eyes.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
“To keep you away from Victor until the evidence was secure.””
I looked at the letter.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Did Victor kill my mother?””
Thomas didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“I saw him leave the lake house that night.””
My heart stopped.
“Did he hurt her?””
Thomas looked toward the floor.
“I don't know what happened inside the house after I left.””
“Why were you there?””
“Your mother called me. She asked me to collect the original documents and take them somewhere safe.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
Thomas turned toward me.
“Because I was attacked on the way back. Someone forced my car off the road. I survived, but I was told that if I returned, you would be next.””
I looked at him.
“Who told you?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Your father.””
I turned toward Daniel.
He looked devastated.
“Claire, I was trying to keep you safe.””
“Did you know Thomas was alive?””
He nodded.
“Did you know he was protecting me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me believe he was dead?””
Dad lowered his head.
“Because I didn't know whether I could trust him.””
I took a step away.
“You didn't trust anyone. Not Mom. Not Margaret.
Not Thomas. And not me.””
He started crying.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“You made me live in a house with people who were trying to steal my future.””
He nodded.
“And I will regret that for the rest of my life.””
I wanted to forgive him.
But I couldn't.
Not yet.
That afternoon, Margaret arranged for an independent laboratory to verify the paternity report.
She also contacted the police.
Victor had agreed to meet me at the courthouse under supervision.
I didn't want to go.
But I needed to look him in the eyes.
I needed to understand why a man could know he had a daughter and still spend twenty-one years treating her like an obstacle.
At three o'clock, I entered a private interview room.
Victor sat at the far end of the table.
He wore a dark navy suit and a silver watch.
He looked nothing like a monster.
That was what frightened me most.
He stood when I entered.
“Claire.””
I didn't sit.
“Don't call me that like you know me.””
He gave a faint smile.
“You have your mother's eyes.””
“I don't care.””
He sat.
“Your mother was a remarkable woman.””
“You threatened her.””
“I was trying to protect my business.””
“She was your daughter's mother.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then why did you destroy her life?””
He folded his hands.
“Because she made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“She chose Andrew's family over me.””
I stared.
“Andrew was her brother.””
Victor smiled faintly.
“Exactly. She trusted him more than she trusted me.””
I felt disgust rise in my throat.
“You were stealing from her company.””
“I was investing.””
“You forged documents.””
“I made business decisions.””
“You threatened to take me away from her.””
His smile disappeared.
“Your mother was emotional.””
I leaned forward.
“She was protecting me.””
Victor looked at me for several seconds.
Then he said something I would never forget.
“You know, Claire, I always intended to give you a very comfortable life.””
I stared.
“You mean you intended to buy me?””
He shrugged.
“Everyone has a price.””
I stood.
“Not everyone.””
He sighed.
“Your mother said the same thing.””
I turned toward the door.
Then he spoke again.
“Before you leave, ask Daniel why he never told you that he wasn't your father.””
I stopped.
“I already know.””
Victor smiled.
“No, you don't.””
He leaned forward.
“Daniel didn't simply agree to raise you. He was paid.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Victor opened a folder.
Inside was a bank transfer.
A payment of $250,000 made to Daniel Bennett shortly after my mother's death.
I stared at the document.
“What's this?””
Victor smiled.
“Your mother paid him to stay.””
I felt the room spin.
“He's lying,” I whispered.
Victor shrugged.
“Ask him.””
I walked out without another word.
Daniel was waiting in the courthouse lobby.
The moment he saw my face, he knew.
“Claire.””
I held up the document.
“Did Mom pay you?””
He looked at it.
His expression crumpled.
“Yes.””
I stepped backward.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because she wanted me to have enough money to raise you without struggling.””
“That's not what Victor said.””
“What did he say?””
“That you were paid to pretend to be my father.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“I wasn't.””
“Then explain the money.””
He took a breath.
“Your mother had been planning to transfer the inheritance into a trust. She knew I would have to stop working for a while to care for you if anything happened to her.””
I stared.
“She paid you?””
“She gave me money to make sure you never went without.””
“Did you sign an agreement?””
He nodded.
“What did it say?””
“That I would raise you as my own, protect your identity, and never allow Victor to claim you.””
I felt tears gathering.
“Did you ever regret it?””
He looked directly at me.
“Not for one second.””
“Even when Rachel treated me terribly?””
His face tightened.
“Especially then. I should have stopped her.””
“Even when you knew she was stealing?””
“I was trying to gather evidence.””
“Even when you lied to me?””
He lowered his head.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.
“If Mom hadn't given you that money, would you still have raised me?””
Dad didn't hesitate.
“Yes.””
“How can you know?””
He stepped closer.
“Because I loved you before the money existed. I loved you when you were a baby and wouldn't stop crying unless I carried you around the garden. I loved you when you broke my favorite watch trying to fix it. I loved you when you told everyone at school that I was the smartest father in the world, even though I couldn't help you with your math homework.””
He laughed through his tears.
“I loved you when you stopped calling me Daddy and started calling me Dad. And I loved you when you became old enough to disagree with me.””
I couldn't stop crying.
He continued.
“Claire, your mother didn't buy my love. She trusted me with the most precious thing in her life.””
I looked at the document again.
Then I folded it and placed it in my handbag.
“I need time.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
At 6:15 p.m., Margaret called.
The laboratory had completed its initial verification.
The paternity report was authentic.
Victor Hale was my biological father.
But Margaret had discovered something else.
The original trust contained a clause that had never been activated.
It stated that if Victor attempted to establish parental rights or claim ownership of Elena's assets, his financial connection to the company would automatically be terminated.
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your mother anticipated this situation.””
“Can she really do that?””
“It's a complicated legal structure, but yes. Victor's claim to the company can be challenged.””
I sat down.
“So what happens to the inheritance?””
“It transfers fully to you. And the remaining assets are protected from Victor's control.””
I looked at the papers.
Then I noticed something.
The trust named Daniel as my guardian.
But there was a handwritten amendment attached.
It had been signed by my mother.
The date was three days before her death.
I read the first line.
If Daniel ever chooses fear over Claire's safety, the guardianship must immediately transfer to...
The name beneath it was covered by a black mark.
Margaret examined the page.
“That's strange.””
“What?””
“The original document has been altered.””
“Can we recover the name?””
She nodded slowly.
“Possibly.””
Before she could continue, my phone rang.
Mia.
I answered.
“What's wrong?””
She was crying.
“Claire, Mom is gone.””
I stood.
“What do you mean?””
“She was released after questioning. She came home, packed a bag, and left.””
“Where did she go?””
“I don't know.””
I heard her sniff.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
“She left a letter for me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does it say?””
Mia's voice trembled.
“It says I'm not really her daughter.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She says she adopted me.””
I closed my eyes.
Mia continued.
“And Claire, she says my biological mother was Elena.””
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
I stared at Margaret.
She looked equally shocked.
Mia began sobbing.
“Claire, does that mean we're sisters?””
I couldn't answer.
Because if Rachel had adopted Mia using Elena's identity, then the woman who had spent years treating me like an unwanted stepdaughter had been hiding something far worse.
My mother might have been Mia's biological mother, too.
And if that was true, the entire inheritance arrangement was about to change.
Then Mia whispered:
“There's one more thing in the letter.””
“What?””
“She says Mom knew about the adoption because she was there when I was born.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Who was there?””
Mia took a shaky breath.
“Daniel.””
I looked toward the courthouse window.
And suddenly, I understood why my mother had written that the guardianship must transfer if Daniel ever chose fear over my safety.
May you like
Because the truth about our family was much bigger than anyone had told me.
And my father had been hiding another child.
