Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew My Mother's Last Secret

“Your mother wasn't killed because of the money, Claire.””

Thomas Reed's words followed me down the hallway.

“She was killed because she discovered who your real father was.””

For a moment, the world seemed to stop.

I looked at Margaret.

She had gone completely pale.

“Don't listen to him,” she whispered.

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Still protecting the wrong people, Margaret?””

He took one step toward me.

I backed away, clutching the brass key.

“Stay away from me.””

“Claire, please. You deserve to know the truth.””

“Then tell me why you faked your death.””

His expression changed.

“Because someone wanted me dead.””

“Who?””

He glanced toward the bank entrance.

“Not here.””

Margaret grabbed my arm.

“We're leaving.””

Thomas reached into his jacket.

Margaret immediately stepped in front of me.

“Don't you dare.””

He slowly withdrew a photograph instead of a weapon.

“Look at this before you decide who to trust.””

He held it toward me.

It showed my mother sitting in a hospital room, holding a newborn baby.

I recognized the yellow blanket.

I recognized the tiny bracelet around the baby's wrist.

But I didn't recognize the man standing beside her.

He was young, with dark hair and a familiar expression.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who is that?””

He swallowed.

“His name was Andrew Cole.””

“Why is he standing beside my mother?””

Thomas lowered the photograph.

“Because he was the man Elena loved before she married Daniel.””

My knees weakened.

Margaret tightened her grip on my arm.

“Claire, we need to go.””

Thomas continued.

“And he was your biological father.””

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed face down on the polished floor.

I stared at it.

“No.””

Thomas didn't move.

“Your mother met Andrew when she was working in London. They were together for nearly three years. When she discovered she was pregnant, Andrew wanted to marry her.””

“Then why did she marry Daniel?””

Thomas looked toward Margaret.

“Because Andrew disappeared.””

Margaret's voice was sharp.

“That is enough.””

“No,” I said.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

“I want to hear everything.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Andrew was involved in a business dispute with a powerful investment group. He discovered financial fraud involving several people who were laundering money through property companies. Before he could expose them, he was accused of stealing confidential funds.””

“Was he guilty?””

“No. But he was forced out of the country.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“And Daniel?””

“Daniel was Elena's closest friend at the time. He knew about Andrew. He knew you weren't his biological daughter.””

My chest tightened.

“Dad knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“He chose to raise you as his own.””

I felt sick.

“Then why would Mom hide this from me?””

“Because she wanted to protect you from the people who had driven Andrew away.””

Margaret finally spoke.

“Thomas is leaving out important details.””

Thomas turned toward her.

“Such as?””

“Such as the fact that you helped Rachel access Elena's accounts.””

His expression hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

“You stole from a dying woman.””

“I was trying to keep her alive!””

The words echoed through the hallway.

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas closed his eyes briefly.

“Three weeks before Elena died, she discovered that Rachel had been transferring money from her company. She confronted her. Rachel threatened to expose Andrew's identity and take you away from her.””

Margaret shook her head.

“That's not what happened.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Your mother called me that night. She said she had evidence that could destroy the people responsible for Andrew's disappearance.””

I remembered the note.

The person who signed the final transfer was not the person who prepared it.

“What happened to Andrew?””

Thomas looked directly at me.

“I don't know.””

“Is he alive?””

“I believe so.””

My breath caught.

Before I could ask another question, two security guards appeared at the end of the hallway.

Margaret grabbed my hand.

“Move.””

We hurried toward the side exit.

Thomas didn't follow.

Instead, he called after me.

“Claire! Ask Daniel why he never showed you your mother's hospital records!””

I stopped.

Margaret pulled me outside.

A black sedan was waiting near the curb.

She opened the passenger door.

“Get in.””

I climbed inside.

She drove away without speaking.

For several minutes, I watched the buildings pass through the window.

Finally, I turned toward her.

“Was he telling the truth?””

Margaret kept her eyes on the road.

“Some of it.””

“Was Andrew my father?””

“Yes.””

The answer came so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

“I knew Elena had another relationship before Daniel. I didn't know everything Thomas claimed.””

“But you knew I wasn't Daniel's biological daughter.””

Margaret nodded.

“Your mother asked me to keep that information confidential until you turned twenty-one.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“Everyone knew except me.””

“Not everyone.””

“Who else?””

Margaret didn't answer.

I looked down at my hands.

The brass key was still there.

“Did Dad know?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

For twenty-one years, I'd called Daniel Bennett my father.

He'd taught me to ride a bicycle. He'd sat beside my hospital bed when I had pneumonia. He'd attended every school performance, every parent-teacher meeting, and every birthday.

He had held my hand at my mother's funeral.

And he'd never told me.

“Why did he stay?”” I whispered.

Margaret finally looked at me.

“Because he loved you.””

I turned away.

“Then why did he lie?””

“Because sometimes people make decisions out of fear and spend the rest of their lives trying to justify them.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*Claire, your father is being questioned at the police station. Rachel has filed a complaint claiming he stole from your inheritance. You need to come home.*

I showed Margaret.

She shook her head.

“It's a trap.””

“How do you know?””

“Because the complaint was prepared before the police arrived at your house.””

I stared at her.

“How could you know that?””

She pulled into a quiet parking lot.

Then she turned toward me.

“Because I received a copy of it twenty minutes ago.””

She opened her briefcase and removed a document.

It was a formal complaint.

Rachel had accused Daniel of transferring $600,000 from Elena's trust into a private account.

But something else caught my attention.

The complaint listed me as a witness.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I had never seen the document.

I looked at Margaret.

“They're using my name again.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone wants to make it appear that you authorized the transfers.””

I stared at the paper.

Then I noticed the date.

It was dated two days before my twenty-first birthday.

The same day Rachel had asked me to sign several university-related documents.

I remembered the papers.

She'd said they were required for my scholarship records.

I hadn't signed anything without reading it.

But Mia had brought the papers to my room.

She'd asked me to sign the top page while she held the folder.

I remembered writing my name on a university form.

Had there been another page beneath it?

My stomach turned.

“Margaret, I think Mia might have helped them.””

Margaret said nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Mia.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

She was crying.

“Claire, you have to come home.””

“Are you safe?””

“I don't know.””

“Where's Mom?””

“She's in the study with the man from the bank.””

I froze.

“Thomas?””

“No. Another man.””

“What does he look like?””

“Tall. Gray hair. He's holding some papers.””

I heard a door slam.

Then Mia whispered:

“Claire, Mom says if you don't come back with the key, Dad will go to prison.””

I looked at Margaret.

She shook her head urgently.

I closed my eyes.

“Mia, listen to me. Don't give anyone anything.””

Then she whispered something that changed everything.

“Claire, I think Mom knows where your real father is.””

The call ended.

I looked at Margaret.

“Take me home.””

She hesitated.

“Claire—”

“Please.””

For the first time since my mother's death, I wasn't thinking about money, property, or the inheritance.

I was thinking about the possibility that somewhere in the world, a man who had been searching for me might still be alive.

And Rachel might know exactly where he was.

When Margaret pulled into our driveway, the house looked strangely ordinary.

The curtains were open.

The porch light was on.

A delivery truck was parked across the street.

But two police officers stood near the front door.

I stepped out.

One of them approached.

“Are you Claire Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“We need you to come inside.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“I'm her attorney.””

The officer glanced at her identification.

“Then you can accompany her.””

Inside, I found my father sitting at the dining table.

His face was pale.

Rachel stood beside the fireplace, holding a glass of water.

Mia was on the stairs.

When she saw me, she started crying again.

“Claire!””

She rushed down and grabbed my arm.

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

“Don't touch her.””

Mia froze.

I looked at Rachel.

“What happened?””

She placed a document on the table.

“Your father has been stealing from your inheritance.””

Dad stood.

“Claire, don't sign anything.””

Rachel turned sharply.

“Daniel, you've done enough.””

He looked at me.

“Whatever she tells you, don't believe it.””

Rachel laughed.

“Listen to him. He's been lying to you for twenty-one years.””

I looked at my father.

“Is Andrew Cole my biological father?””

The room went silent.

Dad slowly lowered his eyes.

And that was the moment I understood.

He wasn't going to deny it.

He was going to tell me the truth.

But before he could speak, Rachel opened the document in front of her.

“There's something else Claire should know.””

She turned the first page.

Then she smiled.

“Your mother didn't leave you the inheritance.””

She pointed to the signature at the bottom.

“She left it to the child she believed was hers.””

I stared at the document.

And then I noticed the name.

Not Claire Bennett.

Not Andrew Cole.
