Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

I stared at Thomas.

“Andrew was at the lake house that night?””

He nodded.

“According to the recording.””

Dad stood immediately.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You knew he was there.””

Dad shook his head.

“I knew Elena was meeting someone. I didn't know it was Andrew.””

“Daniel,” Margaret said quietly, “we need the truth now.””

My father turned toward me.

“Claire, listen. I didn't know Andrew had returned to the country.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Then why did Mom say she was meeting him?””

He looked down.

“Because she wanted to leave with him.””

I stared.

“Leave you?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Dad sat down.

“Your mother wanted to take you somewhere safe. She believed Andrew could protect you better than I could.””

I swallowed.

“Did you agree?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I'd raised you. I couldn't imagine waking up without you in my life.””

His voice broke.

“I know that sounds selfish.””

“It does.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Thomas placed the memory card on the table.

“The recording will answer the remaining questions.””

Margaret connected a laptop to the television.

The screen flickered.

Then an image appeared.

My mother.

She was sitting at the kitchen table in the lake house, wearing the cream sweater I remembered from an old family photograph.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked frightened.

But her voice was steady.

“If anyone is watching this, my name is Elena Bennett. I'm recording this because I believe someone is trying to take my daughter and destroy everything I've built.””

My throat tightened.

Mom looked toward the kitchen door.

“Daniel knows about the financial transfers. Andrew knows about Victor. Rachel knows where the original documents are hidden.””

She paused.

“I don't know which one of them I can trust anymore.””

The camera shook slightly.

Then my mother leaned forward.

“Claire, if you're watching this one day, I want you to know that none of this was your fault.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

A car door slammed outside.

Mom stood.

“Someone's here.””

She walked toward the front door.

The camera showed a man entering.

It was Andrew.

He looked younger, but unmistakably familiar.

“Andrew,” my mother whispered.

He embraced her.

Then he looked around the room.

“Where's Claire?””

“Daniel took her home.””

Andrew nodded.

“Good.””

Mom's eyes filled.

“I can't keep doing this.””

“I know.””

“They're threatening her.””

Andrew took her hands.

“Then we leave tonight.””

Mom shook her head.

“I need the evidence.””

“Forget the evidence.””

“I can't.””

Andrew looked at her.

“Then I'll stay.””

Mom kissed his cheek.

“I knew you'd say that.””

A noise sounded outside.

Andrew turned.

“Who's that?””

Mom's expression changed.

Then the camera captured another person entering the room.

Rachel.

She was holding a folder.

Andrew stepped in front of Elena.

“Get out.””

Rachel smiled.

“Hello, Andrew.””

Mom looked horrified.

“Rachel, how did you find us?””

Rachel placed the folder on the table.

“Daniel told me.””

I looked at my father.

He shook his head violently.

“I didn't.””

The recording continued.

Rachel opened the folder.

“You two really should have stopped pretending this was a love story. Elena, your company is finished. Andrew, your freedom is temporary.””

Andrew stepped toward her.

“Leave.””

Rachel laughed.

“You don't understand. Victor has everything he needs.””

Mom looked at the folder.

“What did you do?””

Rachel's smile disappeared.

“I did what was necessary.””

Then a man's voice came from outside.

“Rachel?””

The camera shifted.

A tall man entered the room.

Victor Hale.

He looked directly at Andrew.

“You should have stayed away.””

Andrew moved toward him.

“Where is my daughter?””

Victor smiled.

“Safe. For now.””

My stomach turned.

Mom stepped between them.

“Don't you dare threaten Claire.””

Victor laughed.

“You're the one who made her valuable.””

The screen went dark.

I gasped.

“No!””

Margaret checked the laptop.

“The recording may have been interrupted.””

Thomas looked at the memory card.

“There's another file.””

He opened it.

This time, the image showed a different angle.

The kitchen.

The table.

My mother standing near the window.

Andrew was gone.

Rachel was gone.

Victor was speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

Then another person entered.

Daniel.

My father.

He looked exhausted.

“Where is Elena?””

Victor turned.

“She left.””

“Where?””

Victor shrugged.

“Ask your wife.””

Dad grabbed his jacket.

“You told me this was about money.””

Victor stepped closer.

“It was.””

“Then why are you threatening my daughter?””

Victor smiled.

“Because your daughter is the only thing Elena still cares about.””

Dad looked toward the hallway.

Then he said:

“You promised Claire would be left alone.””

Victor laughed.

“I promised you many things, Daniel.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the black screen.

My father sat motionless.

Then I turned toward him.

“You were there.””

He nodded.

“I was.””

“You knew Andrew was there.””

“I didn't know he had already arrived.””

“You knew Victor was threatening me.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

He looked at me.

“Because Victor told me he'd make sure you were never safe again.””

I shook my head.

“You should have trusted someone.””

“I know.””

“You should have trusted Mom.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

I turned away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Thomas opened another file.

It was an audio recording.

My mother's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, Daniel, I hope you finally found the courage to tell Claire the truth.””

A pause.

“I know you love her. I know you want to protect her. But you cannot protect her by keeping her trapped inside a lie.””

I closed my eyes.

Then came the sentence that made me cry.

“She doesn't need two perfect fathers. She needs one honest family.””

The recording ended.

I sat down.

For the first time, I understood that my mother hadn't wanted me to choose between Daniel and Andrew.

She'd wanted me to have both.

But fear had turned everyone against one another.

The next morning, Margaret received a call from the police.

Victor Hale had been located.

He'd been arrested at a private airport outside Boston while attempting to leave the country.

Rachel had also been formally detained for questioning.

But the police had discovered something else.

The money missing from Elena's accounts hadn't gone to Rachel alone.

Several transfers had been made through an offshore company controlled by Victor.

And the final transfer authorization carried a digital verification that appeared to come from my mother's personal account.

Margaret looked at the records.

“This doesn't make sense.””

“Why?”” I asked.

“Your mother was dead when this authorization was submitted.””

Thomas examined the timestamp.

Then his expression changed.

“It's not possible.””

“What?””

He pointed to the date.

The authorization had been submitted eight months after Elena's death.

But the verification code had been generated using a device registered to her.

I stared at the screen.

“Could someone have stolen her phone?””

Margaret nodded.

“Possibly.””

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

“Or someone could have had access to her personal security credentials.””

Dad looked confused.

“What are you suggesting?””

Thomas turned the laptop toward him.

“The person who submitted this transaction used your old employee identification number.””

Dad's face drained.

“My identification number?””

“Yes.””

“I haven't worked for Elena's company in years.””

Thomas tapped another line.

“Someone reactivated your account.””

I stared at my father.

“Who had access?””

He shook his head.

“Only three people. Me, Elena, and the company's former administrator.””

“Rachel?”” I asked.

He nodded.

Margaret immediately called the police.

Within minutes, another message arrived.

The forensic team had found a second recording on the memory card.

It contained a conversation between Rachel and Victor.

Thomas played it.

Rachel's voice came first.

“Daniel won't cooperate forever.””

Victor answered.

“He doesn't have to. We have his signature.””

Rachel laughed.

“And the girl?””

“She'll sign when she's old enough.””

“What if she refuses?””

Victor's answer was chilling.

“Then we'll make her believe everyone she loves has betrayed her.””

I felt sick.

Rachel's voice returned.

“And Mia?””

“She's useful. Keep her close to you.””

The recording ended.

I looked at Thomas.

“They planned all of this?””

He nodded.

“From the beginning.””

My phone rang.

It was Mia.

I answered.

“What's wrong?””

She was crying.

“Claire, the police are at the house.””

“What happened?””

“They found something in Mom's bedroom.””

“What?””

“A box of documents.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did they tell you what was inside?””

Mia hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Birth certificates.””

I frowned.

“What about them?””

“There are two.””

My stomach tightened.

“One for me and one for you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you saying?””

Mia's voice broke.

“Claire, Mom's birth certificate says her maiden name was Elena Cole.””

I stared at Thomas.

He went completely still.

Mia continued.

“Claire, I think Mom was related to Andrew.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“She wasn't just his business partner. She was his sister.””

I couldn't breathe.

Margaret slowly lowered her phone.

Thomas looked as though he'd been struck.

And then my father whispered:

“Oh, God.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He covered his face.

“There's something I never told you about your mother.””

My voice trembled.

“Tell me.””

He looked at me through tear-filled eyes.

“Andrew isn't your biological father.””

Silence.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Dad swallowed.

“Andrew is your mother's brother.””

My entire world seemed to collapse.

I looked at the photograph.

The letters.

The years of waiting.

The story we'd all been told.

Then who was my father?

My phone vibrated again.

An email had arrived from an unknown sender.

The subject line read:

*THE REAL PATERNITY TEST — FINAL RESULTS.*

I opened it.

There was one attachment.

A scanned laboratory report.
