Chapter 9: The Choice That Defines Us

Michael didn’t say anything.

Neither did I.

The letter remained open between us.

A piece of paper carrying a sixteen-year-old lie.

Finally, Michael whispered:

“She told him that?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how.

Sarah walked into the room.

The moment she saw the letter, she froze.

“No.””

Michael looked at her.

“You told him?””

Her face collapsed.

“Michael…”

“You told my father I wasn’t his?””

“No.””

“Then why did he write this?””

Sarah looked at me.

I had never seen her look so scared.

Not when the secrets came out.

Not when the marriage ended.

This was different.

This was fear of losing her son.

“I need to explain.””

Michael laughed.

A broken laugh.

“Everyone always needs to explain after.””

The words hurt.

Because he was right.

Sarah stepped closer.

“Michael.””

“No.””

He backed away.

“Every person in this family knew something except me.””

I stood.

“Michael—”

“No, Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I’m tired.””

Those two words destroyed me.

Not angry.

Not dramatic.

Just tired.

Sarah began crying.

“I made mistakes.””

Michael looked at her.

“You made me feel like my own mother didn’t want me.””

She covered her mouth.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Silence.

The same words Jordan had said.

And they were true.

Sarah sat down.

“I need to tell you what happened.””

No one spoke.

She looked at Michael.

“Your biological father left before you were born.””

Michael stared.

“Why?””

“Because I told him you weren’t his.””

“Why would you do that?””

Sarah looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She swallowed.

“That he would take you.””

Michael’s face changed.

“Take me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell him?””

“I thought he would disappear.””

A painful silence.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“He came back years later.””

Michael shook his head.

“You ruined everything because you were scared.””

Sarah cried.

“Yes.””

He looked away.

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

She accepted it.

And somehow that was the hardest thing to watch.

Later that night, I found Michael outside.

Sitting on the back steps.

I sat beside him.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said:

“Do you ever wonder what your life would be like if you knew everything from the beginning?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“What do you think?””

I thought carefully.

“I think I would still choose you.””

He looked down.

“Even if I wasn’t yours?””

“You were always mine.””

He smiled slightly.

“But what if I wasn’t?””

I shook my head.

“You keep asking the wrong question.””

He looked confused.

“The question isn’t whether you were my son.””

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“The question is whether I was your father.””

He looked at me.

“And was I?””

I smiled sadly.

“Every day.””

Two days later, Jordan came over.

He looked different.

Less angry.

More lost.

“I need to apologize.””

Michael looked at him.

“For what?””

Jordan sighed.

“For letting my mom make me part of it.””

Michael said nothing.

Jordan continued.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

“But I should have noticed.””

Michael looked down.

“I should have said something too.””

That surprised me.

Jordan looked at him.

“What?””

“You weren’t the problem.””

Jordan swallowed.

“My mom made you feel that way.””

Michael nodded.

“Yeah.””

A strange silence passed.

Two brothers.

Both hurt by the same person.

Both carrying things they never asked for.

Then Jordan said:

“My dad contacted me again.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

Jordan looked at me.

“He wants to meet.””

“No.””

Jordan nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why tell me?””

“Because he said something.””

“What?””

Jordan looked at Michael.

Then at me.

“He said he has proof that Sarah wasn’t the only one hiding things.””

My stomach tightened.

“What proof?””

Jordan reached into his pocket.

A flash drive.

“He gave me this.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Jordan’s face darkened.

“Because he wants something.””

“What?””

“He wants me to convince you to give him control of your father’s company shares.””

I laughed.

“So that’s what this was about.””

Jordan nodded.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

He looked at Michael.

“He said the reason he knows so much…”

A pause.

“Is because someone inside your family has been helping him.””

The room went silent.

My first thought was Sarah.

But then I saw Jordan’s face.

He looked terrified.

“Who?””

Jordan swallowed.

“He said the person who gave him access…”

Was someone we trusted.

Someone who had been around us for years.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It showed Daniel.

Standing beside someone.

Someone familiar.

Someone I never expected.

The caption underneath said:

*You should ask your father’s old business partner why he betrayed you.*
