Chapter 5: The Man From Before

I almost didn’t go home.

A part of me wanted to leave.

Take Michael.

Start over.

Forget Sarah existed.

But life doesn’t work that way.

Not when someone you loved has spent years building a house on top of buried secrets.

When I arrived, Sarah was sitting alone at the dining table.

The same table where Michael had eaten alone.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

She looked exhausted.

No makeup.

No carefully chosen clothes.

Just Sarah.

The woman I married.

The woman I no longer recognized.

“Where is Jordan?””

I asked.

She looked up.

“He’s upstairs.””

“Good.””

She nodded.

Neither of us moved.

Finally, she whispered:

“You hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

That seemed to hurt her more.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””

She looked down.

“What I did was a choice.””

For the first time, she admitted it.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Tell me everything.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was twenty years old when I met Daniel.””

I said nothing.

“He was charming.””

Her voice was quiet.

“He made promises.””

“Did he keep them?””

She laughed sadly.

“No.””

I leaned against the counter.

“Jordan?””

She nodded.

“Jordan is his son.””

“And Michael?””

Her eyes filled.

“Michael is…”

She stopped.

“Say it.””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The words hurt.

Even though I already suspected.

“I don’t know.””

I repeated them.

“You don’t know if my son is mine?””

She started crying.

“I was scared.””

“Sixteen years.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You built my entire life on a lie.””

“I loved you.””

I stared.

“Did you?””

She looked shocked.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me believe something that could destroy me?””

She had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

A lie could come from fear.

But years of lies came from decisions.

“Why the box?””

Her face changed.

“I needed money.””

“For what?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He came back.””

I stared.

“Jordan’s father?””

She nodded.

“He found me.””

“When?””

“Eight months ago.””

“And you hid this from me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because he knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I had another child.””

I froze.

Sarah continued.

“He knew Michael existed.””

“And?””

“He said he would tell everyone.””

My jaw tightened.

“Tell everyone what?””

“That Michael might not be yours.””

The room went silent.

I finally understood.

She wasn’t just hiding the truth.

She was being controlled by it.

“Daniel threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“And you still pushed Michael away?””

She started crying harder.

“I was overwhelmed.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She looked at me.

“I was scared.””

“And Michael?””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say you know.””

She looked up.

“Because you made him feel unwanted.””

“I know.””

“You made him think he was the problem.””

“I know.””

“You took his mother’s things.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t sell everything.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I only sold one thing.””

“The box.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because Daniel wanted proof.””

I stared.

“Proof of what?””

“That Michael existed.””

The answer made no sense.

Until she continued.

“Daniel said if he could prove Michael was his son…”

She stopped.

“Then what?””

Sarah looked toward the stairs.

“Then he would take him.””

The blood drained from my face.

“You thought Daniel could take Michael?””

“Yes.””

“And your solution was to make Michael feel abandoned?””

She broke down.

“I thought if Michael hated me, it would hurt less when everything came out.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You were preparing him for losing you.””

She nodded.

“And you didn’t realize…”

My voice cracked.

“You were making him lose everyone.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

Before I could say anything else, a sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

We both froze.

Then Jordan appeared on the stairs.

His face was pale.

“How long have you known?””

Sarah stood.

“Jordan.””

He looked at her.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

He laughed quietly.

“You knew my dad was threatening you?””

“Jordan, please.””

“You knew he was coming back?””

“Please.””

“And you still acted like Michael was the problem?””

Sarah cried.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Jordan looked at her.

“No.””

His voice shook.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

The words hit her harder than mine had.

Because they came from her own son.

Then Jordan reached into his jacket pocket.

“I found something.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

My eyes went to it.

Sarah’s face turned white.

“Where did you get that?””

Jordan looked at her.

“From Dad.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

I stepped forward.

“What’s inside?””

Jordan looked at me.

Then at Sarah.

“It’s a letter.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“And it’s addressed to Marcus.””
