Chapter 8: The Enemy We Never Saw

Daniel Carter showed up three days later.

Not with anger.

Not with threats.

With a smile.

That was what made him dangerous.

People who wanted to hurt you usually made it obvious.

Daniel looked like the kind of man people trusted.

Perfect haircut.

Expensive jacket.

Calm voice.

The kind of person who could destroy someone’s life while sounding polite.

I was waiting outside Michael’s school when I saw him.

He leaned against a black SUV.

Waiting.

For my son.

My entire body went cold.

I walked toward him.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel looked at me.

“So you’re Marcus.””

I stopped.

“You know exactly who I am.””

He smiled.

“I’ve known about you for years.””

My fists tightened.

“Stay away from my son.””

He laughed softly.

“That’s interesting.””

“What?””

“You call him your son.””

I stepped closer.

“He is.””

Daniel looked amused.

“Even after you know?””

“Especially after I know.””

His smile faded slightly.

“That’s why Sarah chose you.””

I hated hearing her name from him.

“What do you want?””

He adjusted his jacket.

“Nothing complicated.””

“Then why are you here?””

“To see Michael.””

“No.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“Yes, I do.””

“He’s my son.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“He’s a person.””

Daniel looked annoyed.

“What?””

“He’s not a possession.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“Neither do you.””

He smiled.

“You really believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask Sarah why she never told you about the second test.””

My heart stopped.

“What second test?””

Daniel smiled.

There it was.

The reason he came.

A weapon.

“I knew she wouldn’t tell you.””

I stepped forward.

“What second test?””

He looked toward the school entrance.

“Ask her.””

Then he walked away.

That night, I confronted Sarah.

She knew immediately.

“Daniel found you.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“What did he say?””

“He mentioned another test.””

Sarah went silent.

I felt anger rise.

“Another secret?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She sat down.

“There was another test.””

I stared.

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Two years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel came back.””

“And?””

“He demanded proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Michael was his.””

I laughed.

A bitter sound.

“Again?””

“I refused.””

“But you took another test.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“The results confirmed the same thing.””

I stared.

“What?””

She whispered.

“Michael is yours.””

I closed my eyes.

The relief should have been immediate.

But it wasn’t.

Because the pain wasn’t about biology anymore.

It was about trust.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel threatened to expose everything.””

“You already exposed everything.””

“I know.””

She looked broken.

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I shook my head.

“Fear explains one bad decision.””

I looked at her.

“It doesn’t explain a lifetime of them.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

The next morning, Michael came downstairs holding a letter.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“What’s wrong?””

He handed it to me.

“I found this in Mom’s old things.””

My hands froze.

Another letter.

Another secret.

I opened it.

It wasn’t from Sarah.

It was from Daniel.

But it wasn’t addressed to me.

It was addressed to Michael.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Michael, if you’re reading this, it means Sarah failed to keep the truth from you.*

I looked at my son.

“Where did you find this?””

“In the box.””

I kept reading.

*You deserve to know why I left.*

My hands shook.

Because I already knew this letter was going to change something.

The question was what.

I continued.

*I did not leave because I didn’t want you.*

I looked up.

Michael was watching me.

His face was pale.

May you like

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*I left because Sarah told me you were not my son.*
