Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Door

I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did Michael.

We sat in the living room after midnight with only the kitchen light on.

The house felt different.

Not empty.

Exposed.

Like someone had turned on a light in a room we had refused to enter.

Michael sat on the couch holding the old picture frame.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question broke something inside me.

I turned toward him.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

He shrugged.

“I caused problems.””

“No.””

“You and Sarah are fighting because of me.””

I moved closer.

“Michael.””

He looked up.

“You did not cause this.””

His eyes watered.

“I thought maybe if I was easier…”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Easier?””

“Less sad.””

The words crushed me.

“You thought you had to be less sad so people would love you?””

He looked away.

I sat beside him.

“Your mom would hate that you felt that way.””

A tiny smile appeared.

“She used to say I had the biggest feelings.””

“She was right.””

He laughed quietly.

Then the smile disappeared.

“Dad?””

“What?””

“Why didn’t you notice?””

I had no answer.

The truth hurt.

Because I had no excuse.

“I should have.””

He nodded.

“You were busy.””

“I was.””

I looked at the floor.

“But I was also wrong.””

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Emily.

*Meet me tomorrow. Alone. There are things you need to know about Sarah and Jordan.*

I stared at the screen.

Michael noticed.

“Who is it?””

I hesitated.

Then I showed him.

His face changed.

“Her sister?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she help us?””

I thought about that.

Because families are complicated.

Sometimes the person who hurts you is related to you.

And sometimes the person who saves you is someone you thought disappeared.

The next morning, I met Emily at a small coffee shop across town.

She looked exhausted.

Older than I remembered.

“Marcus.””

“Emily.””

She sat down.

No small talk.

No pretending.

“Sarah can never know I contacted you.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because she’ll know I found out.””

“Found out what?””

Emily took a deep breath.

“Sarah didn’t just move Michael’s things.””

My hands tightened around my coffee cup.

“What did she do?””

“She sold some of them.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The box.””

My heart stopped.

“What about the box?””

Emily looked at me.

“She didn’t put it in storage.””

The room seemed to go quiet.

“Then where is it?””

Emily swallowed.

“She gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

She slid a piece of paper across the table.

An address.

I looked at it.

“Why?””

“Because Sarah was desperate.””

“For what?””

Emily’s eyes filled with anger.

“For money.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

She leaned closer.

“Sarah has been hiding debt for over a year.””

I felt sick.

“How much?””

“Enough that she started making choices she never thought she would make.””

I looked at the address again.

“And Jordan?””

Emily looked away.

“That’s the part you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Jordan isn’t the reason Sarah changed.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what is?””

Emily whispered.

“Jordan’s biological father.””

I frowned.

“What does he have to do with this?””

She looked directly at me.

“Marcus…”

She paused.

“Jordan didn’t just come back into Sarah’s life.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying Sarah knew exactly who Jordan was before she married you.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“It isn’t.””

She pulled another paper from her bag.

A photograph.

A document.

Something old.

Something Sarah had hidden.

I looked down.

And my blood turned cold.

Because the name written across the top was not Jordan’s.

It was mine.

And beneath it was a date from sixteen years ago.

The same year Michael was born.

The same year Sarah told me she lost everything.

Emily whispered:

“Marcus, there is something about Michael’s birth that Sarah never told you.””

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if my own son had been the only person in our house who was being lied to.
