Chapter 7: The Document With My Daughter's Name

For the next thirty seconds, I couldn't speak.

Rachel's words kept repeating in my head.

If she refuses, we'll have to use the other document.

"What other document?"" I finally asked.

"I don't know yet.""

"Rachel, they mentioned Lily.""

"I heard.""

"Why would my daughter be involved in any of this?""

Rachel exhaled slowly.

"That's what we're going to find out. But I want you to understand something. Whatever Mark and Robert have prepared, don't let them pressure you into signing anything.""

I looked toward the stairs.

Lily was asleep.

Her bedroom door was slightly open, and the soft glow of her night-light spilled into the hallway.

"What if they've already done something?""

"Then we'll address it.""

I swallowed.

"Can someone take my daughter away because of something her father did?""

"Not simply because of that. But we need to understand whether they've submitted any documents involving her.""

I looked at the recording transcript Rachel had sent me.

Mark's voice appeared in black text.

She'll do anything to protect her daughter.

I had once thought that was one of the most beautiful things about our marriage.

Now he was using it as leverage.

The following morning, Rachel arrived at my house at 8:15.

She carried a laptop, a folder, and two coffees.

"I've been thinking about the recording," she said.

I handed her the original documents.

"Tell me what you found.""

She opened her laptop.

"The trust arrangement is more complicated than Megan initially described.""

A diagram appeared on the screen.

Three companies.

Two bank accounts.

One family trust.

And my name.

"According to the draft documents, you were supposed to be the primary beneficiary of a trust holding the transferred properties.""

"Which means?""

"On paper, you would appear to control assets connected to the company.""

I stared at the screen.

"But I wouldn't actually control anything?""

"Not necessarily. The trust agreement gives broad management authority to a trustee.""

"Who?""

Rachel clicked another page.

"Robert Bennett.""

I laughed without humor.

"So my father-in-law would control the properties, but I would be listed as the beneficiary.""

"Correct.""

"And if something went wrong?""

"Your name could become central to any investigation into the source and movement of the money.""

I felt sick.

"Why would anyone agree to that?""

"Because the documents were apparently designed to make the arrangement look legitimate.""

She opened another file.

Then she stopped.

"Chloe, look at this.""

It was a draft trust agreement.

Near the bottom was a section titled SUCCESSOR BENEFICIARY.

I read the name.

Lily Bennett.

My daughter.

I looked at Rachel.

"Why is Lily's name here?""

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

She enlarged the document.

The next paragraph stated that if I became incapacitated, died, or was otherwise unable to act, Lily would become the successor beneficiary.

I shook my head.

"They're putting my five-year-old daughter into this?""

"It appears so.""

"Can they do that without my consent?""

"This is a draft. We need to determine whether a finalized version exists.""

I stared at Lily's name.

Then I noticed something else.

The document was dated September 12.

The same day Mark had taken Lily and me to the park and spent the afternoon telling me how lucky he was to have our family.

I remembered him pushing Lily on the swings.

I remembered him taking pictures.

I remembered thinking that he was the kind of father every little girl deserved.

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Rachel, I need to know whether anything has already been registered.""

She closed the laptop.

"That's our next step.""

At 10:40, Rachel received a call from a colleague.

She listened for several minutes before speaking.

"Are you certain?""

A pause.

"Send me the document.""

She ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

"There's a trust registration.""

My stomach dropped.

"Is it the one with Lily's name?""

Rachel nodded.

"The filing was submitted three weeks ago.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Three weeks?""

"Yes.""

"By whom?""

"Robert's attorney.""

"Did I sign it?""

Rachel looked at me.

"Your name appears on the consent page.""

I closed my eyes.

"Another forged signature.""

"Apparently.""

I stood and walked toward the kitchen.

My hands were shaking so badly that I had to put them against the counter.

"How many times did they do this?""

"We don't know yet.""

I turned.

"Can we stop it?""

"We can challenge the registration and seek appropriate legal protection. But I need to see the complete filing.""

I looked at Lily's drawing on the refrigerator.

Three people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.

I had kept it there because I wanted her to feel that we were still a family.

Now I wondered whether I was the only person trying to keep that picture real.

At noon, Mark arrived unexpectedly.

I saw his car through the window.

Rachel stood immediately.

"Don't let him inside unless you feel comfortable.""

I took a breath.

"I need to hear what he has to say.""

I opened the door.

Mark looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.

"Can we talk?""

"Rachel is here.""

His eyes moved past me.

"Of course she is.""

He stepped inside.

Then he noticed the documents on the table.

His expression changed.

"What have you been looking at?""

I didn't answer.

He picked up the trust agreement.

For a moment, he simply stared at it.

Then he looked at me.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the records your family filed.""

He put the paper down.

"Chloe, you don't understand the arrangement.""

"Then explain it.""

"It's a protective trust.""

"Why is Lily listed?""

"She's our daughter.""

"That isn't an explanation.""

He ran both hands over his face.

"Look, Dad wanted to protect the properties from creditors.""

"By putting them in my name?""

"Technically, yes.""

"And by listing Lily as the successor beneficiary?""

He hesitated.

I felt my heart pounding.

"Mark, did you know about this?""

"Yes.""

The answer came quietly.

I stared at him.

"You knew?""

"I was trying to make sure Lily would always have something.""

"Something purchased with money your company couldn't account for?""

"That's not fair.""

I laughed.

"Fair? You used my identity to create a trust I never approved, and you put our daughter's name into it.""

He stepped closer.

"Everything I did was to protect our family.""

"No. You protected your father. You protected Megan. You protected the company.""

"I protected you.""

"From what?""

He looked at me.

Then his voice dropped.

"From the truth.""

Rachel stood.

"Mr. Bennett, I think you should leave.""

Mark ignored her.

"Chloe, please. I need you to understand what happens if this falls apart.""

"Then tell me.""

He glanced at Rachel again.

"I can't discuss everything in front of an attorney.""

"That's convenient.""

He took a breath.

"Your father-in-law has been moving money out of the company for years. Megan handled the accounts. I handled the property side. I knew things weren't right, but I didn't understand how much had disappeared until recently.""

I stared at him.

"How much?""

He looked down.

"More than six million.""

My stomach turned.

"And you thought putting my name on everything would solve it?""

"I thought we could move the properties into the trust, stabilize the company, and repay the money.""

"With what money?""

He didn't answer.

Rachel spoke.

"Did you know that the bank was investigating the transfers when you submitted the trust documents?""

Mark nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you disclose that information?""

"No.""

Rachel closed her folder.

"Then this conversation is over.""

Mark looked at me.

"Chloe, please.""

I stepped toward the door.

"Leave.""

He stood there for a moment.

Then he said:

"If you do this, you won't just hurt me. You'll destroy Lily's future.""

I looked directly into his eyes.

"You already did that when you decided her name was something you could use.""

He walked out.

But before he reached his car, he turned around.

"One more thing, Chloe.""

I waited.

"Dad isn't the only person who signed those documents.""

Then he drove away.

That evening, Rachel contacted the county records office.

The trust registration had been submitted with several supporting documents.

One of them was a notarized declaration stating that I had personally appeared before the notary and consented to the arrangement.

I had never met that notary.

But the declaration included a witness.

Megan Bennett.

Rachel stared at the page.

"She signed this.""

I felt a strange emptiness.

"Megan told us she wanted to help.""

"She may be cooperating now, but she was involved before.""

I looked at the signature.

"Can we use this against her?""

"If it's authentic, yes.""

I picked up my phone.

I wanted to call Megan.

I wanted to ask why she'd helped them.

But before I could dial, a message appeared.

Unknown number: You need to know Mark is preparing to file for emergency custody. He says you're unstable and that you've been taking financial documents from the family business.

I read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

He plans to use the Thanksgiving incident to prove you are violent.

My fingers went numb.

I looked toward the stairs.

Lily was singing to herself in her bedroom.

And suddenly I understood what Mark meant when he said there was another document.

May you like

He wasn't only trying to protect the company.

He was preparing to take my daughter away.
