Chapter 2: The Apology They Wanted

At 7:15 the following morning, I found a message waiting on my phone.

It was from Mark's father.

Robert: Your behavior yesterday was disgraceful. Linda and I expect you to make things right before this situation gets any worse.

I read it while standing in the kitchen, waiting for Lily's toast to pop.

I didn't respond.

At 7:22, another message arrived.

This time, it was from Megan.

You owe me an apology. My cheek is still swollen. I hope you're happy.

I looked at the screen for several seconds.

Then I blocked her number.

Lily came downstairs wearing her yellow cardigan and carrying her stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy, can I have pancakes?""

I put my phone away.

"Of course.""

She climbed into her chair.

I noticed she was eating with her left hand, keeping her right hand close to her body.

"Does your cheek hurt, sweetheart?""

She shook her head.

Then she asked a question that made me stop moving.

"Are we going to Grandma's house again?""

"Not today.""

"Not next Thanksgiving?""

I knelt beside her.

"We don't have to go anywhere that makes you feel unsafe.""

She considered that.

"Will Daddy be mad?""

I swallowed.

"That's something Daddy and Mommy need to work out.""

She looked at her pancake.

"I don't want Aunt Megan to be mad anymore.""

I brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You don't have to make grown-ups happy, Lily. That's not your job.""

She nodded, although I wasn't sure she understood.

Mark came downstairs at 8:40.

He was already dressed in a dark suit, his hair neatly combed, his expensive watch fastened around his wrist.

He looked like a man preparing for an ordinary business day.

"Morning," he said.

I didn't answer.

He poured coffee.

"Did you read Dad's message?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"And what?""

"Are you going to respond?""

I placed Lily's lunchbox on the counter.

"Why would I?""

"Because he's expecting an apology.""

I turned toward him.

"Robert wasn't the one who slapped Lily.""

Mark sighed.

"Chloe, this is getting ridiculous.""

"No. What's ridiculous is that everyone in your family has called me, texted me, or demanded an apology, and not one person has asked whether Lily is okay.""

"Mom asked.""

"After I forced her to.""

He set his coffee down.

"Look, I know yesterday was bad. But you have to understand something. Megan has been having a difficult year.""

I stared at him.

"What does that have to do with our daughter?""

"She's under pressure.""

"So am I. Should I start slapping people?""

"Can you stop twisting everything I say?""

I laughed bitterly.

"Mark, I don't need to twist your words. They're already ugly enough.""

He glanced at Lily.

"Can we discuss this privately?""

I lowered my voice.

"We can discuss it when you're ready to be honest.""

His eyebrows drew together.

"What does that mean?""

"Exactly what I said.""

He picked up his coffee and walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"Mom is organizing a family dinner on Sunday.""

I blinked.

"You're joking.""

"She wants everyone together so we can move forward.""

"Without Lily and me.""

"Obviously not.""

I stared at him.

"Why would I bring my daughter into a room full of people who think she deserved to be slapped?""

"Nobody thinks that.""

"Your mother called it discipline.""

He rubbed his jaw.

"Chloe, just apologize. We can put this behind us.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Do you remember what you said to me when Lily was born?""

He looked confused.

"What?""

"You told me that if anyone ever made our daughter feel small, you would stand between her and that person.""

His expression changed.

"I was emotional. She had just been born.""

"No. You were her father.""

I picked up Lily's backpack.

"Have a good day, Mark.""

He left without saying goodbye.

By noon, I had convinced myself that perhaps I was overreacting to the situation.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

"Hello?""

"Chloe? It's David.""

David was Mark's cousin. He worked as an accountant and had attended Thanksgiving the night before.

I hadn't spoken to him in months.

"Hi, David.""

"Is Lily okay?""

I closed my eyes.

"She's doing better. Thank you for asking.""

"I've been thinking about calling you since last night.""

"Is there something wrong?""

He hesitated.

"I don't want to get involved in a family argument, but there's something you should know.""

I sat down.

"What?""

"Before you and Lily left, your father-in-law told everyone that you were going to apologize to Megan.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He said Mark would handle it.""

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

"Mark never told me that.""

"I figured.""

David paused.

"There's another thing. I heard Robert talking to Mark in the study before dinner.""

"What were they discussing?""

"The company.""

I waited.

David lowered his voice.

"Your husband has been having some financial problems.""

I stared at the kitchen wall.

"What kind of financial problems?""

"I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to say.""

"David, please.""

He sighed.

"Robert has been talking about restructuring the business. Apparently, Mark has been involved in some decisions that haven't gone particularly well.""

I remembered Mark's words from the night before.

You could cost me everything.

"Does this have anything to do with Megan?""

David was silent for a moment.

"That's what I was afraid you might ask.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What do you know?""

"Nothing definite. But there's a lot of tension around the company. Robert has been making decisions for Mark, and Megan seems to have more influence than anyone realizes.""

"Why?""

"I don't know, Chloe.""

Then he added quietly:

"Just be careful about signing anything your husband puts in front of you.""

The call ended.

I sat motionless.

Signing anything?

What could Mark possibly want me to sign?

That afternoon, while Lily was at preschool, I opened the filing cabinet in our home office.

I wasn't looking for anything specific.

I simply wanted to understand what David meant.

Our mortgage documents were in the top drawer, along with insurance policies, tax returns, and the paperwork for Mark's investment accounts.

I found a thick folder labeled FAMILY HOLDINGS.

Inside were copies of several financial statements.

Most of them looked ordinary.

Then I noticed something strange.

A document dated four months earlier had my name printed near the bottom.

It was a personal guarantee.

The document stated that I agreed to accept financial responsibility for a business loan connected to Mark's company.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My signature appeared beneath the agreement.

Except I hadn't signed it.

I knew my signature. I'd spent years signing invoices, contracts, and design proposals.

This one looked almost identical.

Almost.

The capital C was too narrow. The final stroke of my surname was too long.

Someone had copied my signature.

I checked the date.

July 14.

That was the day Mark had told me he needed my passport for a routine insurance update.

I remembered handing him the folder.

I remembered him saying it would only take a few minutes.

My hands began to shake.

I photographed every page with my phone.

Then I called the bank listed on the document.

After several transfers, a woman answered.

"Good afternoon. How may I help you?""

"My name is Chloe Bennett. I need to verify a personal guarantee associated with a business loan.""

"Certainly. Do you have an account number?""

I read it aloud.

There was a pause.

"One moment, please.""

I heard keyboard clicks.

Then the woman's voice changed.

"Mrs. Bennett, I'm going to need you to verify some additional information.""

I answered her questions.

"Thank you. I can confirm that a personal guarantee was recorded under your name.""

My stomach tightened.

"I never signed that agreement.""

Another pause.

"I'm sorry?""

"I never signed it. I didn't authorize anyone to sign it for me.""

The woman became noticeably more formal.

"Mrs. Bennett, if you believe your signature has been forged, I recommend that you submit a written dispute immediately. I can also flag the account for further review.""

"Who submitted the document?""

"I'm not authorized to provide all borrower information over the telephone.""

"But my name is on the guarantee.""

"I understand. I can arrange for a specialist to contact you.""

"Was the loan taken out by my husband's company?""

Another pause.

"Yes, ma'am.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much?""

"I'm sorry?""

"How much was the loan?""

She hesitated.

Then she gave me the number.

One million eight hundred thousand dollars.

I almost dropped the phone.

When Mark returned home that evening, I was sitting at the kitchen table.

The documents were spread in front of me.

He stopped when he saw them.

"What are these?""

I looked directly at him.

"Explain.""

His eyes moved across the papers.

For the first time since Thanksgiving, he looked genuinely frightened.

"Where did you get those?""

"From our filing cabinet.""

He placed his briefcase on the floor.

"Chloe, you shouldn't be going through business documents.""

"Why is my name on a personal guarantee for your company?""

He loosened his tie.

"It's complicated.""

"Then simplify it.""

"That loan was part of a restructuring arrangement.""

"Did I sign this?""

He didn't answer.

I pushed the document toward him.

"Mark. Did I sign this?""

He looked at the signature.

Then he looked at me.

"Not personally.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"What does that mean?""

"Your authorization was handled through the office.""

"My authorization?""

"Chloe, don't panic. It's a standard procedure.""

"You forged my signature.""

His face hardened.

"I did what I had to do to protect the business.""

I stared at him.

"You used my name to guarantee a million-eight-hundred-thousand-dollar loan?""

"It's not as simple as that.""

"Did you ask me?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Your credit was stronger than mine at the time.""

I pushed my chair backward.

"You used my credit because yours wasn't good enough?""

"Keep your voice down.""

I laughed.

"That's your response?""

He stepped closer.

"Listen to me. The loan is being managed. Nobody is asking you to pay anything.""

"Then why did you put my name on it?""

"Because the bank required additional security.""

"And you decided my permission didn't matter?""

He stared at me.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"I thought you'd understand once everything was settled.""

I gathered the papers.

"Who else knows?""

"Chloe—"

"Does your father know?""

He looked away.

"Does Megan?""

His jaw tightened.

That was enough.

I felt sick.

"Your sister knows?""

"She's involved in the company.""

I shook my head.

"Of course she is.""

Mark reached for the documents.

"Give those to me. I'll explain everything tomorrow.""

I pulled them away.

"No.""

His expression changed.

"Excuse me?""

"I'm keeping copies.""

"Chloe, you're making a mistake.""

"Then let me make it.""

He stood there, breathing heavily.

Finally, he picked up his briefcase.

"I'm going to my parents' house.""

I almost smiled.

"Of course you are.""

He stopped at the doorway.

"Don't do anything stupid.""

I looked at him.

"Like signing a document I haven't read?""

He left.

At 9:16 p.m., my phone rang again.

David.

I answered immediately.

"David, I need to ask you something.""

"Before you do, I need you to listen.""

His voice sounded different.

Urgent.

"Robert called me an hour ago. He knows you've been asking questions.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"I don't know. But he asked whether I'd discussed the company with you.""

I looked at the papers on the table.

"What did you tell him?""

"That I hadn't.""

I was quiet.

Then David said:

"Chloe, there's something about that loan you need to understand.""

"What?""

"The money wasn't used for the company.""

I froze.

"Then where did it go?""

David took a breath.

"Some of it went to an account controlled by Megan.""

I stared at the wall.

"Why would my husband's company send money to his sister?""

"I don't know all the details.""

"David, please tell me what you know.""

His voice dropped.

"Because the bank is investigating missing funds, and your personal guarantee is the only reason Robert thinks he can keep the company from collapsing.""

My blood ran cold.

Then he said:

"And Chloe, there's a reason Mark needed you to apologize to Megan yesterday.""

I gripped the phone.

"What reason?""

May you like

David hesitated.

"Because if you start asking questions about the money, Megan may be the first person who goes to prison.""
