Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I zoomed in on the photograph until the image became grainy.

There was no mistaking the watch.

A silver Omega with a black face and a tiny scratch near the clasp.

I'd bought it for Mark on our fifth wedding anniversary. He'd kissed me in our kitchen that night and promised he'd never take it off.

Now he was wearing it while holding hands with his sister.

Or at least, that's what the photograph appeared to show.

I looked at the image again.

Megan was standing close to him outside an upscale restaurant. Her fingers were intertwined with his. His other hand rested against the small of her back.

They weren't standing like siblings.

They weren't even standing like business partners.

They looked like two people who had something to hide.

"Chloe?""

Linda's voice pulled me back.

I locked my phone.

"What?""

"Who sent you that message?""

"Why does it matter?""

She glanced toward the street.

"Because you need to be careful about believing everything you see.""

I stared at her.

"Is that your explanation?""

"I'm saying photographs can be misleading.""

"Then tell me what I'm looking at.""

Linda's mouth tightened.

"Mark has been under tremendous pressure. Megan has been helping him with the business.""

"By holding his hand?""

"Don't be childish.""

I almost laughed.

"My husband is photographed holding hands with another woman, and I'm childish for asking questions?""

Linda stepped closer.

"That woman is his sister.""

"Exactly.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Linda reached for the printed email she'd given me.

"Give me that.""

I folded it and slipped it into my pocket.

"No.""

"Chloe, that document doesn't belong to you.""

"It has my name on it.""

"It's a private family discussion.""

"And my signature is apparently part of the discussion.""

Her expression hardened.

"You have no idea what you're putting at risk.""

I opened the front door.

"Then perhaps someone should finally tell me the truth.""

Linda looked past me toward the living room.

Lily was sitting on the carpet, coloring her turkey.

"Think about your daughter," Linda said quietly.

I looked at her.

"I am. That's why you're leaving.""

She stood there for another moment before turning toward her car.

But just before she reached it, she called over her shoulder.

"Mark isn't the only person who can lose everything, Chloe.""

Then she drove away.

I waited until Lily was asleep before calling the unknown number.

It rang twice.

A man answered.

"Hello?""

"Who are you?""

"My name is Daniel.""

"How did you get that photograph?""

"I've been following the money.""

I closed my eyes.

"Are you a journalist?""

"No.""

"Then what are you?""

There was a pause.

"Someone who used to work for Bennett Development.""

I sat down.

"What happened to you?""

"That's a long story. Right now, you need to understand something. Your husband and Megan have been working together for a long time.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Are they having an affair?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know what you would call their relationship.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Chloe, I have financial records showing payments to accounts connected to both of them. I also have photographs from several meetings.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why are you contacting me?""

"Because your name is on a document that could put you in serious financial trouble.""

"Who forged my signature?""

"I can't prove that yet.""

"Then why should I believe you?""

"Because I have something else.""

I heard papers moving on the other end.

"Your husband didn't just use your name as a guarantor. He submitted a second document claiming you had approved the transfer of company assets.""

My fingers went cold.

"What assets?""

"A property portfolio. Three commercial buildings and two residential developments.""

"Where were they transferred?""

"That's what I'm trying to establish.""

I looked toward the stairs.

"Daniel, I have a five-year-old daughter. I need to know whether my husband is dangerous.""

His voice softened.

"I'm not suggesting he'll physically hurt you. But I would not trust him with your money, your documents, or your daughter's future.""

I swallowed.

"Can you meet me?""

"Tomorrow. Ten in the morning. There's a coffee shop on North Clark Street. I'll send you the address.""

"Why not tonight?""

"Because someone has already noticed I've been asking questions.""

The call ended.

I sat in the dark kitchen for a long time.

Then I forwarded the photograph and the messages to Rachel.

Her reply came immediately.

Do not contact Mark about the photograph. Save everything. I'll meet you tomorrow.

The next morning, Mark came downstairs wearing the same silver watch.

I watched him pour coffee.

"Good morning," he said.

"Morning.""

He glanced at me.

"Did Mom come by yesterday?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

"That I should think about my daughter's future.""

He nodded, apparently satisfied.

"She's worried about us.""

I placed my phone on the counter.

"Mark, where were you Tuesday night?""

He stopped stirring his coffee.

"Tuesday?""

"Yes.""

"At the office.""

"All night?""

He looked at me.

"Why?""

"Just asking.""

He set the spoon down.

"Chloe, if this is about the bank, we need to stop.""

"Stop what?""

"Turning every conversation into an interrogation.""

I studied his face.

Six years ago, I could tell when he was lying.

He used to scratch the side of his nose whenever he made something up.

He wasn't doing that anymore.

He'd learned to lie without showing it.

"I have an appointment today," I said.

"With whom?""

"A friend.""

He frowned.

"Who?""

"Rachel.""

His expression changed.

"Why are you involving a lawyer?""

"Because I have a legal problem.""

"We're married. You could have talked to me first.""

I almost smiled.

"I did. You told me I was making a mistake.""

He picked up his coffee.

"Rachel is going to make this worse.""

"Perhaps she can explain why my signature appears on documents I never signed.""

Mark's jaw tightened.

"Chloe, I'm warning you.""

I looked directly at him.

"Don't.""

For a moment, he seemed surprised.

Then he grabbed his briefcase.

"Fine. Do whatever you want.""

He left.

I waited until his car disappeared before collecting my keys.

At 10:06 a.m., I arrived at the coffee shop.

Daniel was sitting near the window.

He was in his early forties, with tired eyes and a dark coat. A leather folder rested beside his coffee.

He stood when he saw me.

"Chloe Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"Daniel Harris.""

We shook hands.

He looked toward the entrance.

"Did you come alone?""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

I sat down.

"Show me what you have.""

He opened the folder.

The first photograph showed Mark entering a hotel.

The second showed Megan arriving twenty minutes later.

The third showed them leaving together.

I looked at the dates.

They were from nearly a year earlier.

"How long have you been collecting these?""

"About eight months.""

"Why?""

"Because I noticed unusual transfers when I was working in the company's accounting department.""

He slid another document toward me.

It was a spreadsheet.

Several payments had been highlighted.

The names were unfamiliar, but the amounts were not.

$125,000.

$210,000.

$340,000.

Then a final transfer.

$475,000.

I looked up.

"Where did this money go?""

"Several shell companies.""

"Who owned them?""

"Megan controlled two. Mark controlled another through an intermediary.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"How much altogether?""

"Just under two million.""

I leaned back.

"And my guarantee?""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what makes this particularly interesting.""

He pulled out a copy of the loan application.

"Your husband needed additional collateral because the company had already accumulated significant debt. Your personal guarantee made the loan possible.""

"But the money was transferred elsewhere.""

"Correct.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because the company was being used to move money out of its legitimate accounts.""

I stared at the spreadsheet.

"Was Robert involved?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Your father-in-law knew the company was having financial problems. Whether he knew exactly where every dollar went is another question.""

I thought about the email.

Once Chloe signs the acknowledgment, the original guarantee will no longer be an issue.

I pulled it out.

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"Linda gave it to me.""

He looked up sharply.

"Your mother-in-law?""

"Yes.""

He read the sentence again.

Then he closed the folder.

"Chloe, I think you need to understand something. They're not simply trying to protect the company.""

"What are they trying to protect?""

"Each other.""

He leaned forward.

"And you're the person they've decided to put between themselves and the bank.""

Before leaving, Daniel gave me a flash drive.

"These are copies of records I managed to preserve.""

I didn't take it immediately.

"Why are you giving me this?""

"Because I was fired after I questioned the transfers.""

"Did you report it?""

"I tried. But the documents I had weren't enough.""

He pushed the drive closer.

"Your husband has access to the original records. If he realizes you have copies, he may try to destroy whatever evidence remains.""

I slipped it into my purse.

"Thank you.""

Daniel looked almost uncomfortable.

"There's one more thing.""

I stopped.

"The photograph you received wasn't taken outside a restaurant.""

"What?""

"It's from a private club in Lake Forest. The man in that photograph isn't just Mark's business partner.""

"Then who is he?""

Daniel looked at me.

"That's Mark. But the woman holding his hand isn't Megan.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What are you talking about?""

He turned his laptop around.

The original image appeared.

He zoomed in on the woman's face.

It wasn't Megan.

It was a woman with long dark hair and a small tattoo behind her ear.

"Who is she?""

"Her name is Vanessa Cole. She works for a company that received several of the transfers.""

I stared at the screen.

"Then why did someone tell me it was Megan?""

Daniel shrugged.

"Perhaps they wanted you to believe your husband was involved with his sister.""

I felt a chill.

Someone had deliberately sent me a misleading photograph.

But why?

And who knew enough about my marriage to manipulate me?

My phone vibrated.

Rachel.

Chloe, don't go home yet. I need to tell you something.

I opened her next message.

I found a second document in the bank's records. Your name appears on a property transfer dated August 3.

I looked up at Daniel.

He was watching me.

"What?""

I showed him the message.

His face went pale.

"August 3?""

"Yes.""

He closed his laptop.

"Chloe, that's the date the company transferred the first development property.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

May you like

He swallowed.

"It means someone may have used your identity to transfer ownership of a property worth more than four million dollars.""
