Chapter 9: The Sister Hidden From Me

The café was almost empty when I arrived.

Rain tapped against the windows.

People moved through the city outside, holding umbrellas, chasing buses, living ordinary lives.

But my life had stopped being ordinary a long time ago.

I sat across from the woman who claimed to be my sister.

She looked nothing like me.

At least not at first glance.

She had dark hair pulled back loosely, tired eyes, and a small scar near her eyebrow.

But then she smiled.

And something about that smile felt familiar.

Not because I knew her.

Because I had seen it before.

In old photos.

In my own reflection.

“I know this is a lot,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You think?””

She lowered her eyes.

“My name is Lily Carter.””

The last name hit harder than expected.

Carter.

My real last name.

“I’m not here to replace anyone,” she continued.

“I don’t even know who anyone is anymore.””

She nodded.

“That’s how I felt too.””

I studied her face.

“How old are you?””

“Thirty-two.””

I froze.

“Two years older than me.””

“Yes.””

I leaned back.

“So Michael knew about you?””

She nodded.

“He raised me until he disappeared.””

The word disappeared again.

Everyone kept using it.

Like my father simply vanished into the air.

“Tell me what happened.””

Lily looked outside at the rain.

“My father loved you.””

I swallowed.

“You never met me.””

“No.””

She looked back at me.

“But he talked about you constantly.””

My chest tightened.

“He kept pictures.””

“What pictures?””

“Pictures of you growing up.””

I looked down.

The idea felt impossible.

Someone I never knew had watched my life from a distance.

“He knew when you graduated.””

“When you started your company.””

“When you got married.””

I looked up sharply.

“Married?””

She nodded.

“He knew about Clara.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“How?””

“People talk.””

She gave a sad smile.

“Especially when someone is proud.””

I didn’t know what to say.

For thirty years, I had wondered why my biological father abandoned me.

And now I was learning the opposite.

He never stopped caring.

“Why didn’t he contact me?””

Lily was quiet.

Then she reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“He tried.””

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

My hands shook.

“He wrote you every year.””

I opened one.

The date was from when I was ten years old.

The handwriting matched the letter I had already found.

*Arthur,*

*I hope you had a wonderful birthday. I hope you know someone is thinking about you today.*

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Lily watched silently.

“I never knew if I should give these to you.””

“Why now?””

She looked at me.

“Because Richard is preparing to destroy the last thing your father left behind.””

My head lifted.

“What?””

“Michael kept evidence.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You found business records.””

She leaned forward.

“You haven’t found the real evidence.””

“What real evidence?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The reason Richard was willing to destroy everyone.””

I felt a chill.

“What is it?””

Lily looked around the café.

“Your company wasn’t just stolen from your father.””

She paused.

“It was stolen from someone else first.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“You.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Michael discovered that Richard planned everything before you were born.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if Richard never wanted a family.””

The words landed heavily.

“He wanted control.””

Lily explained.

Years ago, Richard discovered that Michael had created a revolutionary business model.

A company that could change an entire industry.

Richard wanted it.

When Michael refused to hand over control, Richard manipulated contracts, destroyed partnerships, and forced him out.

But that wasn’t enough.

Michael had one advantage.

A legal ownership agreement.

A document proving that the original company belonged to him.

And his future children.

Including me.

“So Richard couldn’t take it.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because the agreement named you.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“Your biological father protected your inheritance before you were even born.””

The pieces started connecting.

The fake documents.

The attempted company transfer.

The vacation.

Richard wasn’t just stealing from me.

He was trying to erase evidence.

“How do you know all this?””

Lily looked down.

“Because I helped him hide it.””

“You?””

She nodded.

“After he disappeared, he gave me instructions.””

“Why not tell me sooner?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He destroyed my father’s life. I thought he could destroy mine too.””

I understood fear.

I had lived inside it.

Just a different kind.

“What happened to Michael?””

Lily looked away.

“I don’t know.””

My heart sank.

“You don’t know?””

“The last time I saw him, he was leaving to meet someone.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Richard Bennett.””

The room became silent.

“When?””

“Two weeks after your eighteenth birthday.””

I froze.

The timing felt intentional.

“What happened after?””

“No one saw him again.””

I looked at the table.

All these years.

Everyone told me he left.

But maybe he didn’t.

Maybe he was taken away from my life.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*Arthur, you need to call me immediately.*

I answered.

“Daniel?””

His voice was urgent.

“Where are you?””

“With someone who knows Michael.””

“Leave.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Arthur, leave now.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I just found evidence that Lily’s identity was hidden from you for a reason.””

I looked at Lily.

“What reason?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Because Richard didn’t only hide your sister.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

“He hid who was responsible for Michael’s disappearance.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Lily looked at me.

“What happened?””

I stood up.

“We need to go.””

Her face changed.

“Arthur.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“Did he finally tell you?””

“Tell me what?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The person who made Michael disappear.””

I waited.

And then she said the name.

May you like

A name I never expected.

“Your mother.””
