Chapter 7: The Inheritance Nobody Wanted Me To Find

The address Richard gave me wasn’t really an address.

It was a clue.

A name.

A forgotten company building on the edge of the city.

Daniel searched through old records and found the connection.

“Michael Carter owned part of this property.””

I looked at the abandoned building outside the car window.

“Why would Richard hide this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because whatever is inside matters.””

The building smelled like dust and old paper.

A security guard led us to a storage room.

“He left instructions years ago,” the guard said.

“For me?””

The man nodded.

“He said only Arthur Carter could open it.””

Hearing that name felt strange.

Like wearing someone else’s clothes.

I used the key provided with the letter.

Inside was a small box.

Nothing more.

No gold.

No money.

No dramatic inheritance.

Just documents.

Photos.

And a handwritten journal.

I opened the first page.

*My son,*

*If you found this, then you finally know your real name.*

My throat tightened.

The journal explained everything.

Michael hadn’t disappeared.

He had been forced out.

Richard used his connections to destroy his reputation.

But Michael kept records.

Proof.

Proof that Richard had stolen ideas.

Proof that he had manipulated investors.

Proof that the wealth my family displayed was built on deception.

Daniel flipped through the documents.

“This is enough to reopen everything.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“Your father’s image. His business history. His financial claims.””

I stared at the papers.

“My entire family’s life was a lie.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

That evening, my parents came to our house.

Together.

That alone told me they were afraid.

Richard looked older.

Smaller.

“You found it.””

I held up the journal.

“Yes.””

My mother started crying.

“Arthur…”

I looked at her.

“How many years were you going to let me believe this?””

She covered her face.

“I thought the past was buried.””

“The past doesn’t disappear because you ignore it.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t know what I sacrificed.””

I laughed quietly.

“You’re right.””

I held up the documents.

“You sacrificed other people.””

His face changed.

“You think Michael was innocent?””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard looked angry now.

“You only heard his side.””

My mother whispered:

“Richard.””

But he continued.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

He pointed at the journal.

“Michael made mistakes too.””

I stared at him.

“Like what?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“He abandoned you.””

The words hit.

Because that was the one thing I feared.

“What?””

“He left.””

“No.””

“He chose not to fight.””

My mother looked away.

I saw something in her face.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

And suddenly, I wasn’t sure.

Because the truth was never as simple as villains and heroes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard looked down.

“Because I wanted you to hate him.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

His answer was barely a whisper.

“That you would choose him.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Arthur, I know you found Michael’s files. But there is one thing Richard never told you.*

My heart raced.

Another message appeared.

*Your father didn’t disappear because Richard forced him away.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*He disappeared because he was protecting you from something much worse.*
