Chapter 5: The Father I Never Knew

The first thing I did after Vanessa’s call was stare at my own reflection in the dark window.

For thirty years, I had believed I knew exactly who I was.

Arthur Bennett.

Son of Richard and Eleanor Bennett.

The man who built a company.

The man who carried his family.

The man who thought he understood where he came from.

But now a single sentence had shattered everything.

“He was trying to hide what happened to your real father.””

I replayed Vanessa’s words over and over.

My real father.

Not my biological father?

Not the man who taught me to ride a bike?

Not the man whose last name I carried?

Clara found me standing there.

“Arthur?””

I turned around.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

“Vanessa said Richard isn’t my real father.””

Clara’s expression changed.

“What?””

“She said my parents have been hiding something for thirty years.””

She walked closer.

“Did she explain?””

“No.””

I looked at my phone.

“She hung up.””

Clara sat down slowly.

For once, she didn’t have an answer.

And I appreciated that.

Some moments weren’t meant to be fixed.

They were meant to be survived.

The next morning, I called Vanessa.

She answered after one ring.

“Arthur.””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

A long pause.

“I knew this would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“That you would eventually find out.””

I gripped the phone.

“Start talking.””

She was quiet for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Your father knew.””

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

“Knew what?””

“That you weren’t his son.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I sat down.

My hand went numb around the phone.

“Who is my father?””

Vanessa breathed in.

“I don’t know if I should be the one telling you.””

“You already told me enough to destroy my entire life.””

Another pause.

“His name was Michael Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Who was he?””

“He worked with Mom before she married Dad.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

The woman who always told me family mattered.

The woman who smiled at every holiday photo.

She had spent my entire life hiding this.

“Where is he?””

Vanessa’s voice became smaller.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

She started crying.

“I was a child when it happened.””

I froze.

“What happened?””

“I heard them fighting.””

“Who?””

“Mom and Dad.””

I stood up.

“What did they say?””

She swallowed.

“Dad said he would ruin Michael’s life if he ever came near you.””

The room felt colder.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Clara was making tea.

She noticed my face but didn’t interrupt.

“Why would he say that?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Michael wanted custody.””

My heart stopped.

“Custody?””

“Yes.””

I sat down again.

“My father tried to take me away?””

“He said you were his son.””

“But he wasn’t.””

“No.””

Her answer was barely audible.

“He wasn’t.””

After the call ended, I sat in silence.

Clara placed a cup of tea in front of me.

“You don’t have to decide what you feel today.””

I looked at her.

“How can I not?””

“Because your whole identity just changed.””

I stared at the steam rising from the cup.

“I spent my whole life trying to make Richard proud.””

Clara reached for my hand.

“And now?””

I swallowed.

“Now I don’t know if the man I wanted approval from ever deserved it.””

That afternoon, Daniel found something.

He came to our house carrying another folder.

“This was hidden inside an old corporate archive.””

I frowned.

“What does my company have to do with my family?””

He placed the folder down.

“Your mother used company resources years ago.””

I opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A younger version of my mother.

Standing beside a man.

Michael Carter.

My fingers trembled.

Behind the photo was a handwritten note.

*If anything happens, Arthur deserves to know the truth.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Where did you find this?””

“Your father’s private storage account.””

My stomach turned.

“He kept it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“Maybe because he was afraid.””

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Clara was beside me, one hand resting over her stomach.

Our baby moved.

A tiny reminder that life continued even when everything else collapsed.

“I’m scared,” I whispered.

Clara opened her eyes.

“Of what?””

“That I’ll become like them.””

She turned toward me.

“Arthur.””

“I spent ten years giving people everything because I wanted to be loved.””

I looked at the ceiling.

“What if that’s all I know how to do?””

Clara touched my face.

“You know how to love.””

She smiled sadly.

“You just forgot that love has limits.””

The next morning, I received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was old.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*Arthur, if you are reading this, Richard finally failed to keep you away from the truth.*

At the bottom was a signature.

Michael Carter.

My biological father.

But before I could read the rest, my phone rang.

May you like

It was my mother.

And she was crying.
