Chapter 3: The Lies My Father Built

My father always loved telling stories.

At family gatherings, he was the hero.

The businessman who “took risks.””

The man who “built everything from nothing.””

People admired him.

Employees respected him.

Friends envied him.

But I knew the truth.

The empire was mine.

The money was mine.

The sacrifices were mine.

He only wore the crown.

For years, I let him.

Until now.

I met Daniel at his office the next morning.

He placed a folder on the table.

“Arthur, before you look at this, I want you to understand something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your family’s behavior wasn’t random.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were records.

Emails.

Transactions.

Approvals.

My father had been signing documents using my authority.

My stomach turned.

“How long?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Nearly two years.””

I leaned back.

Two years.

Two years of pretending.

Two years of smiling at dinner.

Two years of believing my father was proud of me.

“What was he doing?””

Daniel pointed at the papers.

“Loans. Luxury purchases. Personal contracts.””

I picked up one document.

A loan application.

The borrower section had my company name.

The signature section had mine.

But I never signed it.

“This is criminal,” Daniel said.

I looked at the page.

“I know.””

He studied my face.

“Are you sure you want to continue?””

I knew what he meant.

Family.

That word had controlled me my entire life.

But then I remembered Clara standing in that restaurant.

I remembered her soaked dress.

Her shaking hands.

My mother laughing.

My father carving lamb.

“Yes,” I said.

“I’m sure.””

That afternoon, I went to my parents’ house.

I didn’t tell Clara.

She wanted peace.

I wanted answers.

My mother opened the door.

She smiled.

“There you are.””

Like nothing happened.

Like she hadn’t watched her daughter-in-law get humiliated.

“Can we talk?””

She sighed.

“About dinner?””

“No.””

I walked inside.

“About everything.””

Her smile faded.

My father appeared from the living room.

“Arthur.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I assume you’ve cooled down.””

I looked at him.

“You stole from me.””

Silence.

My mother laughed nervously.

“Don’t be ridiculous.””

I placed the documents on the table.

My father looked down.

Then back at me.

“You went through our finances?””

“Our finances?””

I repeated.

“You mean my finances?””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re my son.””

“And you’re my father.””

I stepped closer.

“That doesn’t give you permission to destroy my company.””

My mother crossed her arms.

“We raised you.””

“And I paid for your life.””

Her expression changed.

“You make it sound so ugly.””

“It is ugly.””

My father finally lost his calm.

“You think money makes you better than us?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I pointed at the documents.

“But stealing makes you worse.””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Arthur.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“We found another file.””

I walked away from my parents.

“What file?””

“A message between Vanessa and your father.””

My heart stopped.

“What did it say?””

There was silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Your father wasn’t just helping Vanessa hide the fraud.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then what was he doing?””

May you like

Daniel lowered his voice.

“He was planning to transfer ownership of your company.””
