Chapter 7: The Person Who Signed My Life Away

For a moment, nobody moved.

The words stayed in the air.

*It wasn’t my idea.*

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Rachel.

The doctor who had held my hand through difficult conversations.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and told me she cared about my future.

The woman who had apparently known pieces of my life that even I didn’t know.

“Rachel.””

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

That was the answer.

“Rachel,” I repeated.

“What did he mean?””

She looked away.

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“Don’t do that.””

She looked back at me.

“Emily…”

“Don’t look sorry.””

The words came out sharper than I expected.

“Everyone in this room keeps looking sorry after they hurt me.””

Nobody spoke.

“I want the truth.””

Rachel took a slow breath.

“It was my decision.””

The room went silent.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ashley looked shocked.

Even he didn’t expect her to say it so quickly.

I stared at her.

“Your decision?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was helping you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a beautiful reason.

Helping.

Protecting.

Saving.

But somehow every person who loved me had managed to take away my choices.

“You thought secretly creating embryos with my genetic material was helping me?””

“No.””

“You thought putting them into my sister without telling me was helping me?””

“No.””

“Then what exactly did you think?””

Rachel looked down.

“I thought I was preventing you from losing the chance to become a mother.””

The words hit me.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were almost believable.

And that was what made it worse.

I had spent years wanting a family.

I had cried over negative pregnancy tests.

I had wondered if my body would ever cooperate.

Rachel knew that.

Daniel knew that.

They knew my deepest fear.

And they used it.

“You knew how badly I wanted a child.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you decided that wanting something meant I would accept anything to get it.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

She looked at me.

“Because you were afraid.””

I froze.

Rachel continued.

“You told me you didn’t want to make decisions while you were scared.””

I remembered.

The appointment.

The conversation.

My shaking hands.

“I told you I needed time.””

“Yes.””

“I told you I needed to think.””

“Yes.””

“Not that I wanted someone else to think for me.””

Rachel looked devastated.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up and discover that people you trusted built a future around you without asking if you wanted to live in it.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily.””

I turned.

“Did you know?””

He stopped.

“About Rachel?””

“No.””

“About the plan.””

His silence lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

“You knew.””

He looked down.

“I found out later.””

“When?””

“After the embryo transfer.””

I stared.

“So you knew Lauren was carrying our child and you said nothing?””

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control the damage.””

Daniel looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

A phone rang.

Everyone looked around.

It was Rachel’s.

She pulled it from her pocket.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

*Dr. Thomas Bennett.*

My eyes narrowed.

Bennett.

Ashley’s last name.

Rachel noticed.

“Who is that?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at Ashley.

Her face had gone pale.

“Do you know him?””

Ashley slowly shook her head.

“No.””

But she looked afraid.

I turned back to Rachel.

“Answer it.””

She hesitated.

“Emily.””

“Answer it.””

She did.

“Hello?””

At first, nobody spoke.

Then Rachel’s expression changed.

The color drained from her face.

“What?””

Everyone watched.

She listened.

“No, that’s impossible.””

A pause.

Then:

“When?””

She looked at me.

And I knew something had happened.

Something bigger.

She ended the call.

“What was that?””

Rachel looked at me.

“That was the clinic.””

My heart started racing.

“What about it?””

“They found the original consent records.””

I frowned.

“Original?””

She nodded.

“The ones that were supposed to be signed by you.””

I waited.

“And?””

Rachel’s hands began shaking.

“They weren’t missing.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then where were they?””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“They were rejected.””

I stared.

“Rejected?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because your signature wasn’t yours.””

The room went completely still.

I felt like I couldn’t hear properly.

“What?””

Rachel swallowed.

“The documents were signed, but the handwriting analysis showed they were forged.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“You said you didn’t know.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody spoke.

The answer was getting closer.

I could feel it.

Rachel looked at the floor.

“I thought it was an administrative mistake.””

“Who did you think signed them?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Rachel.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Your father.””

My entire body froze.

My father.

The man who had died five years ago.

The man who had always been strict.

The man who believed family meant everything.

Impossible.

“That’s not possible.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I know how it sounds.””

“My father was dead.””

“Yes.””

“When were the documents signed?””

She hesitated.

“Two years ago.””

The room spun.

Two years ago.

My father had been gone for three years.

“How?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“There’s something you need to know about your father.””

I laughed.

A bitter, exhausted sound.

“Of course there is.””

Daniel ignored it.

“Before he died, he created a trust.””

I frowned.

“What kind of trust?””

“One connected to your medical care.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“He was worried about your future.””

I shook my head.

“My father didn’t control my medical decisions.””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s what you believed.””

The anger came back.

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

“Your father and Rachel knew each other.””

My eyes moved to Rachel.

“How?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“He funded part of our research.””

“What research?””

She took a breath.

“Fertility preservation.””

I felt sick.

“My father funded your clinic?””

“Yes.””

“And he wanted my embryos created?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

But she didn’t need to.

I looked at Daniel.

“And you knew about this.””

“No.””

“Then why are you involved?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he finally understood something.

He wasn’t the only person who had been keeping secrets.

“My father-in-law contacted me before he died.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me something was wrong.””

“What was wrong?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He said someone would try to take away your chance at becoming a mother.””

I stared.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

“So you helped him?””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I tried to find out the truth.””

“And instead you lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another excuse would have.

I looked around the room.

Everyone I trusted.

Everyone who claimed to love me.

All connected by one secret.

A secret my dead father had started.

A secret my husband continued.

A secret my doctor protected.

I walked toward the door.

Nobody stopped me.

Maybe they finally understood.

Maybe they finally realized I didn’t need another explanation.

I needed space.

But before I reached the hallway, Rachel spoke.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“There’s one thing your father never knew.””

I turned.

“What?””

Rachel looked toward Ashley’s baby.

Then at me.

“The second embryo wasn’t supposed to be transferred to Lauren.””

My heart sank.

“Then why was it?””

Rachel whispered:

“Because someone changed the recipient information after your father died.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Rachel looked terrified.

Then she said:

“The person who changed it wasn’t Daniel.””

A pause.

“Wasn’t me either.””

The room went cold.

“Then who?””

Rachel opened her mouth.

May you like

And the name she said next made me forget how to breathe.

“It was signed by Emily Carter.””
