Chapter 5: The Woman Carrying My Second Chance
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people have nothing to say.
The kind of silence that happens when everyone already knows the truth is about to hurt someone.
I looked at Dr. Rachel Morgan.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at Rachel.
“Someone I know?””
My voice sounded strange.
Almost calm.
Rachel lowered her eyes.
That was when I knew.
She wasn’t deciding whether to tell me.
She was deciding how much damage the truth would cause.
“Rachel.””
She looked up.
“Tell me.””
Her lips pressed together.
“The second embryo was transferred six months ago.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Six months.
A lifetime ago.
A time when I was still wearing my wedding ring proudly.
A time when I still believed Daniel was my partner.
A time when I thought our biggest problem was whether we were ready to become parents.
“Who?””
Rachel glanced at Daniel.
I followed her eyes.
And my heart already knew.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
His face was filled with panic.
“Emily, listen—”
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
The answer was standing right in front of me.
But I needed to hear it.
I needed him to say it.
Rachel finally whispered:
“Your sister.””
The world stopped.
My sister.
My younger sister, Lauren.
The person who had held my hand when our mother died.
The person who had slept on my couch for three months after a breakup.
The person who cried when Daniel proposed because she said she had never seen me happier.
My sister.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Rachel looked devastated.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not possible.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Emily.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
He froze.
That was all I needed.
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You knew.””
“Emily, I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
My voice rose.
“After the baby was born? After Lauren gave birth? After you had built another family behind my back?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
I stared at him.
“How is it not like that?””
He had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
A nurse quietly left the room.
Ashley looked between us, confused.
“Lauren?””
She looked at me.
“Your sister is the other surrogate?””
I closed my eyes.
The word hurt.
Surrogate.
Everyone kept using that word.
Like it made everything simple.
Like it erased the fact that my husband had made decisions about my motherhood without me.
Like it erased the fact that two women I loved were now connected to a child created from my body.
“I need to see Lauren.””
Daniel shook his head immediately.
“She doesn’t know.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“She doesn’t know the full story.””
My anger turned into disbelief.
“You’re telling me she is carrying my embryo and she doesn’t know?””
“She knows she’s a surrogate.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Daniel looked away.
“What did you tell her?””
He didn’t answer.
Again.
That silence.
Always that silence.
I walked toward him.
“What did you tell my sister?””
His voice dropped.
“That the embryo belonged to a couple who couldn’t carry a pregnancy.””
I felt like someone had punched me.
“You lied to both of them.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The anger came back instantly.
“Stop saying that.””
He looked at me.
“I’m serious, Daniel. Stop using me as the excuse for everything you did.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
Because there was a difference between making a mistake and creating a system of lies.
Mistakes happened once.
Daniel had made choices.
Over and over again.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Emily, there’s something else.””
I looked at her.
I almost didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.
“What?””
She took a breath.
“When the embryos were created, there was an issue with the consent documentation.””
My hands tightened.
“An issue?””
“Yes.””
“What issue?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then away.
“The forms were altered.””
My blood went cold.
“Altered by who?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
His face changed.
And I knew.
“You.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“You signed something.””
“No.””
“You knew.””
“Emily—”
“You knew the paperwork wasn’t right.””
His voice cracked.
“I knew there were questions.””
“Questions?””
I stepped closer.
“You created a child using my genetic material, and you’re calling it questions?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
“Then why did you let it?””
He looked at the floor.
“I thought we could fix it.””
I stared at him.
There it was again.
The same excuse.
Fix it.
As if my life was a broken machine.
As if my choices didn’t matter.
As if love meant deciding what was best for me without asking me.
A sound came from behind us.
Ashley.
She was crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
“I thought Daniel was helping someone become a father.””
My expression softened slightly.
Not because I forgave anyone.
Because I understood.
She had been manipulated too.
“Did he ever tell you about me?””
Ashley shook her head.
“No.””
“Not once?””
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
The man I married.
The man who knew my favorite coffee order.
The man who remembered every birthday.
The man who somehow erased my existence from another woman’s life.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
He swallowed.
“Of losing you.””
The answer almost made me angry enough to laugh.
“You thought hiding my own children from me would keep me?””
“No.””
“Then what did you think?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I thought if I could solve everything before you knew, you would never have to hurt.””
I stared at him.
And suddenly I understood something.
Daniel didn’t see himself as the villain.
That was the most terrifying part.
He believed he was saving me.
People who believe they are saving someone can justify almost anything.
A doctor can make a mistake.
A husband can make a mistake.
But someone who decides another person doesn’t deserve the truth?
That was different.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Lauren’s name appeared on the screen.
Everyone saw it.
Daniel went pale.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at him.
The fact that he said it so quickly made my decision.
I answered.
“Lauren?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then my sister’s voice came through.
“Emily?””
She sounded tired.
But happy.
“Are you at the hospital?””
My heart tightened.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“Did you meet the baby?””
I couldn’t speak.
Lauren continued.
“Daniel told me you would probably be emotional.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course he did.
“He told me you’d understand once you saw her.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Lauren…”
“What?””
Her voice changed.
She heard something.
“Emily?””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
“Where are you?””
The silence on the phone was immediate.
“Why?””
“Because I need to ask you something.””
“Emily, what’s wrong?””
I swallowed.
The words felt impossible.
“Did Daniel tell you whose embryo you were carrying?””
Silence.
Long silence.
Then Lauren whispered:
“What do you mean?””
My heart broke.
Because she truly didn’t know.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Rachel.
Then Ashley and the newborn baby.
Four people.
Four lives.
One secret.
“Lauren…”
My voice shook.
“The baby you’re carrying…”
I stopped.
I couldn’t say it.
Not yet.
Because saying it would make it real.
But then Lauren asked the question that destroyed the last piece of my denial.
“Emily… why are you asking me that?””
I closed my eyes.
And whispered:
“Because I think it’s mine.””
The line went completely silent.
Then Lauren said something I never expected.
Something that made every secret Daniel had hidden seem even darker.
“Emily…”
Her voice trembled.
“I was going to tell you.””
My blood froze.
“Tell me what?””
A long pause.
Then:
“The baby isn’t the only thing Daniel hid.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was already crying.
Lauren’s voice dropped.
“Emily, you need to leave the hospital.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Because of what she said next.
“Because Daniel isn’t the person you think he is.””
I stared at my husband.
And for the first time that night…
May you like
I wondered if the biggest betrayal wasn’t the baby.
It was the reason Daniel had created all these lies in the first place.
