Chapter 4: The Doctor Who Knew My Secret
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
Not because I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Because I understood it too well.
Daniel.
Ashley.
My fertility doctor.
Standing together outside the clinic where I had gone believing I was making decisions about my own future.
My own body.
My own family.
The photograph felt heavier than paper.
It felt like evidence.
Like proof that somewhere, while I was living my ordinary life, people I trusted had been having conversations about me without me.
I turned the picture over again.
Six words.
*Ask him what really happened that day.*
I looked through the doorway.
Ashley was holding the baby against her chest.
She looked exhausted.
Relieved.
Broken.
Not like someone who had stolen my life.
Like someone who had been trapped inside a story she didn’t understand either.
Then I looked at Daniel.
“What happened that day?””
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
He knew exactly what day the photograph showed.
And that scared me more than anything.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
Daniel looked down.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore.””
His eyes lifted.
“Like what?””
“Like I’m still the person you come home to.””
The pain on his face almost made me stop.
Almost.
But then I remembered the months of lies.
The hidden appointments.
The secrets.
The fact that another woman had given birth to a child created from my own DNA, and I was finding out about it in a hospital hallway.
“Tell me.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Your doctor contacted me.””
I frowned.
“Why would she contact you?””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“She knew you were scared.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“She thought you would change your mind.””
“About what?””
“About the embryo process.””
My chest tightened.
I remembered pieces of that day.
The cold examination room.
The smell of disinfectant.
The sound of rain against the window.
The doctor sitting across from me with a serious expression.
She had told me my condition could make pregnancy difficult later.
She had explained options.
Freezing eggs.
Preserving fertility.
Keeping possibilities open.
I remembered saying I needed time.
I remembered leaving.
“I said no.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You were overwhelmed.””
“I said no.””
My voice became sharper.
“I did not sign anything.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you allow this?””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I expect you to hate me.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“But I need you to know I never wanted to hurt you.””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I know.””
“Because you did.””
The words hung between us.
For the first time, he didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t make excuses.
He just stood there.
Accepting it.
“I found out about the embryos months later,” he said quietly.
I looked at him.
“Found out?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“My doctor called me.””
I froze.
“Your doctor?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told me there had been a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He rubbed his hands together nervously.
“She said the embryos had already been created.””
The hallway seemed to narrow.
“Created from what?””
He looked at me.
“Your eggs.””
“And yours.””
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because we had both provided samples.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I never agreed to that.””
“I know.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Stop saying you know when you let me live in the dark.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to reach for me.
He didn’t.
Maybe he finally understood he had lost that right.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“How?””
He had no answer.
“How were you going to fix secretly creating a child?””
His silence was the answer.
A nurse walked by and glanced at us.
I lowered my voice.
“Who is Ashley?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“What?””
“Not the story you told her.””
I held up the photograph.
“The truth.””
His expression changed.
“She was the surrogate coordinator.””
“Coordinator?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was she carrying the baby herself?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because the original surrogate backed out.””
“And Ashley volunteered?””
He nodded.
I stared at him.
Something still didn’t fit.
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That bothered me.
Because every time he hesitated, there was another secret underneath.
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
“She knew about the embryo.””
“Did she know it was mine?””
His silence lasted too long.
My heart sank.
“She didn’t?””
“No.””
I felt sick.
“Then what did you tell her?””
He whispered:
“That it was from a divorced couple.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another lie.
A different version of the same story.
“You made yourself the victim.””
“I was wrong.””
“You made me disappear.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The anger came instantly.
“Protect me?””
My voice echoed down the hallway.
“You erased me.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You made another woman believe she was helping a single father.””
He looked away.
“And you made me believe my husband was having an affair.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
I pointed toward the delivery room.
“That baby is not just your secret.””
His eyes moved toward the child.
“She’s mine too.””
The words shocked even me.
Because until that moment, I had been thinking about betrayal.
Not motherhood.
Not the tiny baby sleeping a few feet away.
My baby.
Biologically.
Genetically.
But not carried by me.
A complicated grief I didn’t know existed.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“Emily…”
“I need to see the records.””
He nodded.
“I can get them.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I want them from the hospital.””
His face changed.
“Why?””
“Because I don’t trust you.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
He deserved to hear them.
I walked back into the delivery room.
Ashley looked up.
The baby was sleeping now.
Peaceful.
Completely unaware of the damage surrounding her arrival.
I stood beside the bed.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ashley whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“I believe you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel lied to me too.””
The room became quiet.
Ashley looked down at the baby.
“I thought he loved me.””
The honesty hurt.
Not because I was jealous.
Because I knew what it felt like to love someone who wasn’t telling you the truth.
“He told me he was leaving you.””
I looked at the baby.
“He told me nothing.””
Ashley closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
The baby moved slightly.
Her tiny hand curled around Ashley’s finger.
And something inside me softened.
Not toward Daniel.
Never toward Daniel.
Toward her.
The child who had been brought into a world full of secrets she never asked for.
A few minutes later, the door opened.
A woman stepped into the room.
She was wearing a hospital badge.
I recognized her immediately.
My fertility doctor.
Dr. Rachel Morgan.
The woman who had been in the photograph.
She stopped when she saw me.
Her face lost color.
“Emily.””
I felt every emotion I had been holding back rise at once.
“You knew.””
Her lips parted.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
I stepped toward her.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her eyes moved to Daniel.
Then back to me.
“You were never supposed to find out like this.””
My blood ran cold.
“Find out what?””
Rachel looked at the sleeping baby.
Then at me.
And the fear in her eyes told me something I didn’t want to hear.
“There’s something about your embryos that Daniel never told you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
“What?””
Rachel took a slow breath.
Then she said:
“The baby Ashley delivered today isn’t the only embryo that was created from your genetic material.””
The room went silent.
My fingers went numb.
“What did you say?””
Rachel looked at me.
“There were two.””
I stared at her.
Two.
Two embryos.
Two possibilities.
Two pieces of my future created without my knowledge.
“Where is the other one?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Emily…”
I turned toward him.
And before he could finish, Rachel said the words that changed everything.
“The other embryo was implanted six months ago.””
My heart stopped.
“Into who?””
Rachel looked at me.
And I knew before she spoke.
May you like
Because her expression already gave me the answer.
“It was implanted into someone you know.””
