Chapter 6: The Truth My Sister Was Afraid To Tell Me
I held the phone against my ear, but I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
“Lauren?””
No answer.
“Lauren, talk to me.””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words terrified me.
Not because they were an apology.
Because they sounded like goodbye.
“Why are you sorry?””
The silence stretched.
Then she whispered:
“Because I should have told you sooner.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Told me what?””
Across the room, Daniel stood completely still.
He looked like a man watching a building collapse.
Not because he was surprised.
Because he knew what was coming.
“Lauren,” I said again.
“What happened?””
Her voice trembled.
“Not over the phone.””
I looked at Daniel.
The anger inside me sharpened.
“No.””
My voice was louder than I intended.
“No more secrets. No more waiting. No more people deciding when I’m ready for the truth.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Lauren was quiet.
Then she said:
“Okay.””
A pause.
“Daniel told me you would react like this.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He said you wouldn’t understand.””
My stomach twisted.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
Lauren continued.
“He told me you had been under a lot of stress. That you were afraid of having children. That you might reject the baby if you knew the truth.””
My face went numb.
“I would reject my own child?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I never believed that.””
The room became silent.
Even Ashley looked away.
“Lauren…”
“I need to tell you something.””
“Tell me.””
“I met Daniel before the clinic.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“Not like that.””
She rushed the words out.
“I swear, Emily. It wasn’t romantic.””
I closed my eyes.
Another sentence beginning with a defense.
Another explanation.
Another version of the truth.
“Then what was it?””
“He came to me because he was worried about you.””
I frowned.
“Worried about me?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t move.
“He told me you were struggling.””
“I was.””
The words surprised me.
Because it was true.
Last year had been difficult.
The fertility questions.
The uncertainty.
The fear that my body might fail me.
I had cried in the shower so Daniel wouldn’t hear.
I had pretended I was fine.
I had believed he was the only person who understood.
“He said you were shutting down,” Lauren continued.
I swallowed.
“He said he wanted to help.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“By lying?””
Lauren was silent.
Then:
“That’s not what happened at first.””
At first.
Those words mattered.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel asked me if I would help you.””
“Help me how?””
“By carrying the baby.””
Everything stopped.
I stared at the floor.
My sister.
My husband.
A plan.
A baby.
And I had been the only person not included.
“You agreed?””
“I didn’t know it was yours.””
The pain in her voice was real.
“I thought it was for another couple.””
I looked toward Daniel.
“Of course.””
Lauren continued.
“He told me the parents weren’t ready to be involved. He said there were legal complications.””
My hands started shaking.
“Legal complications.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I believed you.””
That answer hurt more.
“What?””
“I believed that if Daniel was doing something this serious, it was because he was trying to protect you.””
I looked at my husband.
The man who had spent years building my trust.
The man who knew exactly how to make people believe him.
“You both thought you were protecting me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lauren said:
“Emily, there’s more.””
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
There was always more.
“What?””
“He didn’t just hide the embryo.””
My chest tightened.
“What else?””
A pause.
“He hid why the embryo was created.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Lauren’s voice dropped.
“Your fertility doctor told him your condition wasn’t as simple as she first thought.””
I frowned.
“What condition?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Emily…”
I turned toward him.
“No.””
My voice cut through the room.
“You’ve had enough chances.””
He stopped.
Lauren continued.
“Your doctor found something genetic.””
The word landed heavily.
Genetic.
I looked at Rachel.
She looked down.
And I knew she had known.
“Rachel?””
The doctor stepped forward.
“Emily…”
“Did you know?””
Her silence answered.
I felt something break.
Another person.
Another secret.
“How many people knew about my own medical information?””
Nobody answered.
Rachel looked ashamed.
“Your genetic screening showed a risk.””
“A risk of what?””
She took a breath.
“A hereditary condition that could make pregnancy dangerous for you.””
I went still.
I remembered.
The fear.
The uncertainty.
The doctor telling me we needed more testing.
But no one had ever told me it was that serious.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
I followed her eyes.
And my blood turned cold.
“Daniel.””
He looked terrified.
“What did you do?””
He whispered:
“I asked them not to tell you yet.””
The room went completely silent.
I stared.
“You asked them?””
“I wanted more information first.””
“You wanted?””
My voice cracked.
“You wanted to decide what I could handle?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You did.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to explain.
But there was nothing left to explain.
“You took my choices away.””
“I was trying to save our family.””
“Our family?””
I pointed toward the baby.
“The family you created without me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
Everyone kept saying that.
Scared.
Fear.
Protection.
Love.
They used beautiful words to hide ugly decisions.
Lauren’s voice came through the phone again.
“Emily.””
I forced myself to focus.
“There’s something else.””
I almost couldn’t believe those words still affected me.
“What now?””
“I found out the truth three weeks ago.””
I frowned.
“Three weeks?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
A long pause.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Lauren’s voice shook.
“He said if I told you, he would make sure I never saw the baby.””
The room changed.
Ashley looked horrified.
Rachel covered her mouth.
I stared at Daniel.
“Did you threaten my sister?””
His face went pale.
“No.””
Lauren interrupted.
“Yes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, I didn’t mean it like that.””
I looked at him.
“How else does someone mean it?””
He had no answer.
Because there was no version of that sentence that sounded better.
I slowly lowered the phone.
“Lauren.””
“Yes?””
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“At home.””
“Stay there.””
“Emily…”
“I’m coming.””
I ended the call.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel stepped toward me.
“Emily, please.””
I looked at him.
And something inside me had changed.
Earlier, I was a wife discovering betrayal.
Now I was something else.
A woman realizing she had been managed.
Controlled.
Kept away from her own life.
“I’m leaving.””
His face changed.
“Please don’t make a decision right now.””
I almost smiled.
Because that was exactly what he had done to me.
Made decisions.
Without asking.
“I’m not making a decision.””
I picked up my coat.
“I’m finally making one.””
He reached for my arm.
I stepped back.
The movement was small.
But he noticed.
And I saw the pain in his eyes.
Good.
For once, he felt a fraction of what I felt.
“I need answers,” I said.
Daniel whispered:
“I can give them.””
“No.””
I looked at Rachel.
Then Ashley.
Then the sleeping baby.
“I need the truth.””
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, Daniel said:
“Emily.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because something in his voice made me turn.
He looked broken.
Completely broken.
“There’s one more thing.””
I closed my eyes.
I was tired.
So tired.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The embryo wasn’t transferred to Lauren six months ago by accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
He looked at me.
And his next words changed everything.
“Someone chose Lauren because they knew you would never forgive them if you found out.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward Rachel.
The doctor’s face lost all color.
May you like
And then Daniel said:
“It wasn’t my idea.””
