Chapter 8: The Man Who Came Back

The signature belonged to Richard Whitmore.

Claire’s father.

The man she told me had disappeared when she was nineteen.

The man she said had abandoned her mother.

The man she claimed she never wanted to see again.

But according to the document—

He was alive.

And he wanted custody rights investigated.

I looked at Claire.

She couldn’t speak.

“Claire?””

Her face had lost all color.

“That’s impossible.””

The lawyer folded the paper.

“Apparently not.””

Maya looked confused.

“Who is Richard Whitmore?””

Claire laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You don’t want to know.””

I stepped closer.

“Try me.””

She sat down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“My father was obsessed with control.””

The room became quiet.

“He believed family was something you owned.””

I looked at the document.

“And he knows about the girls?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I told him.””

The words hit like a slap.

“You told him?””

“Before they were born.””

“Why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because I needed money.””

I felt numb.

“What?””

“The fertility treatments. The legal process. Everything cost more than we had.””

“And you went to him?””

“I had nowhere else.””

Maya shook her head.

“So he knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he wait eight weeks?””

Claire looked terrified.

“Because he was waiting for me to lose control.””

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“He knew I would eventually make a mistake.””

I looked around the room.

Every person had been keeping a different secret.

Every truth had another layer beneath it.

Then my phone rang.

Dr. Bennett.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“Richard Whitmore was at the clinic yesterday.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“He asked for records.””

“What records?””

A pause.

“The original birth documents.””

I looked at Claire.

“Can he get them?””

“Not legally.””

“Then why are you calling?””

Dr. Bennett lowered his voice.

“Because someone already gave him access.””

The room froze.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Dr. Bennett.””

“I’m serious, Daniel.””

He sounded afraid.

“The original records are gone.””

My heart started pounding.

“What do you mean gone?””

“Someone removed them.””

I looked at Maya.

Then Claire.

“Who had access?””

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

“Three people.””

“Who?””

“The doctor who delivered the twins.””

“Who is dead.””

“Yes.””

“Claire.””

Silence.

“And?””

“Maya.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Me?””

“And one other person.””

“Who?””

Dr. Bennett said the name.

A name that made Claire stand immediately.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Claire whispered:

“My mother.””

I froze.

“Your mother?””

“She died years ago.””

Dr. Bennett’s voice came through the phone.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“We checked.””

A pause.

“Claire’s mother is alive.””

The room went silent.

Claire slowly sat down.

“No.””

Dr. Bennett continued:

“And she is the person who filed the complaint with Richard Whitmore.””

I looked at my wife.

For the first time, she didn’t look like someone hiding a secret.

She looked like someone who had just discovered she was trapped inside a bigger nightmare.

Then there was a knock at the front door.

Everyone turned.

Another knock.

Claire whispered:

“She found us.””

I walked toward the door.

My hand touched the handle.

And before I opened it, I heard a woman’s voice from the other side.

“Claire.””

A pause.

“I know you’re in there.””

The voice was calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

Claire covered her mouth.

Because she recognized it.

Then the woman said:

“Open the door.””

“I need to meet my granddaughters.””
