Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed

I drove home without remembering the drive.

The letter sat on the passenger seat.

A single piece of paper that somehow weighed more than everything I owned.

Claire had lied about adoption.

She had lied about Maya.

She had lied about the cameras.

Now there was something about the night my daughters were born.

Something she never told me.

When I entered the house, Claire was sitting in the living room.

She looked exhausted.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who used to dance while cooking.

The woman who cried when we bought our first house.

The woman who held my hand through years of disappointment.

Then I remembered the envelope.

“Daniel.””

I dropped it on the table.

Her face changed.

“What is that?””

“You tell me.””

She stared at it.

Then closed her eyes.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer the question.””

She stood slowly.

“Dr. Bennett.””

“Why did you hide it?””

“Because I was scared.””

“That’s your answer for everything.””

She flinched.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I need the truth.””

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Claire sat down.

“I met Sofia before you knew about the pregnancy.””

I froze.

“Sofia?””

“Maya’s sister.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at her hands.

“Because I was working with a fertility clinic.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

She looked up.

“I was desperate.””

My chest tightened.

“Claire.””

“I wanted a child.””

“We wanted a child.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But every month we got another negative result.””

I remembered.

The appointments.

The tears.

The silence.

“I started looking into other options.””

“What options?””

She didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

That scared me.

“Claire.””

She whispered:

“Experimental treatments.””

I stared.

“You mean…”

“I mean I was trying anything.””

My mind raced.

“So what happened?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“The clinic connected me with Sofia.””

“Why?””

“Because Sofia had complications during pregnancy.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of complications?””

Claire covered her face.

“She knew she might not survive delivery.””

I felt sick.

“And she wanted someone to protect the babies.””

“Maya.””

“Yes.””

“Not you.””

Claire looked away.

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“Then why did you get involved?””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Because Sofia asked me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She asked me.””

The room became confusing.

Nothing made sense.

Claire continued.

“She knew Maya was young. She knew Maya had Noah. She knew Maya couldn’t handle everything.””

“So Sofia chose you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why lie?””

Claire’s expression broke.

“Because I became their mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You became their caretaker.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice became desperate.

“I became the person who woke up every night.””

“The person who fed them.””

“The person who held them.””

She wiped her tears.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“Yes.””

“You changed records.””

“Yes.””

“You hid the truth.””

“Yes.””

“You tied Maya up.””

Her face went pale.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

Then my phone rang.

Maya.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded terrified.

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Something Claire left behind.””

“What?””

Maya took a shaky breath.

“A recording.””

I stood.

“What recording?””

“The night my sister died.””

I looked at Claire.

She had gone completely still.

“Where did you find it?””

“In the storage room.””

My heart pounded.

“Maya, don’t listen to it alone.””

“I already did.””

Her voice broke.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Claire wasn’t the only person who knew the truth.””

I looked at my wife.

“Who else?””

Maya whispered:

“The doctor who signed the birth certificate.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

“The doctor on the recording says Claire paid him.””

I turned toward Claire.

She was crying.

But she wasn’t denying it.

“Daniel…”

I ended the call.

Slowly.

“Did you pay someone?””

Claire looked at me.

And for the first time—

She didn’t say she was scared.

She didn’t say she was protecting anyone.

May you like

She simply whispered:

“Yes.””
