Chapter 3: The File In The Closet

I didn’t sleep.

Neither did Claire.

Neither did Maya.

The three of us sat in the living room while my daughters slept upstairs.

It was the strangest moment of my life.

The woman I loved sat across from me.

The woman I trusted to care for our children sat beside me.

And I had no idea who was telling the truth.

At 3:17 a.m., I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Claire.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why did you call the hospital?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I didn’t.””

“The hospital said someone claiming to be your employee called.””

“I never called.””

Maya whispered, “You did.””

Claire looked at her.

“You’re making this worse.””

“No,” Maya said.

“I’m telling him what happened.””

Claire stood.

“You need to leave.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Maya?””

“She’s been manipulating you since she arrived.””

Maya stared at her.

“Why would I do that?””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Because people do desperate things.””

The room went quiet.

Then I noticed something.

Claire wasn’t defending herself.

She was attacking Maya.

Every answer somehow became an accusation.

I stood.

“Where is my phone charger?””

Claire looked confused.

“What?””

“My office charger.””

“In your desk.””

I walked away.

Not because I needed it.

Because I needed space.

Because something in me had finally accepted a painful truth.

My marriage had cracks.

I just hadn’t seen them.

In my office, I opened drawers.

Nothing.

Then I noticed my filing cabinet.

The bottom drawer was slightly open.

I never left it open.

Inside were old documents.

Tax papers.

Insurance.

Birth certificates.

And one folder I had never seen.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

The first page made my hands go cold.

“Maya Reyes.””

Below it was a list.

Dates.

Times.

Notes.

My stomach turned.

At first, I thought Claire had been keeping records about Maya.

But then I read the notes.

“Baby feeding schedule.””

“Emma’s breathing pattern.””

“Lily’s reaction after medication.””

Why would Claire write these things?

Then I saw the final page.

A printed email.

From Claire.

To someone named Dr. Bennett.

The subject line:

“Need advice before Daniel finds out.””

I read the email.

My hands started shaking.

“I’m afraid Daniel will notice the differences between the girls.””

Differences?

I kept reading.

“The timeline doesn’t match.””

The room spun.

“What?””

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Claire stood in the doorway.

She looked at the paper in my hand.

And for the first time all night—

She looked afraid.

“Daniel.””

I held up the email.

“What does this mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She whispered:

“When I knew how.””

I felt something break inside me.

“What are you talking about?””

She stepped forward.

“You need to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, you need to explain.””

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward our daughters.

“I made a mistake.””

The words hung there.

A mistake.

A mistake involving my children.

A mistake involving Maya.

A mistake involving secrets.

I heard footsteps behind Claire.

Maya appeared.

She looked at the paper.

Then at Claire.

“You never told him.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Maya…”

“You promised.””

I looked between them.

“You two know each other?””

Neither answered.

And that silence was the answer.

My entire body went cold.

“Tell me.””

Claire whispered:

“Daniel, before you hear it from someone else…”

She stepped closer.

“The girls may not be who you think they are.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak—

A loud knock came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Another knock.

Then a man’s voice.

“Daniel Carter?””

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the voice.

It was the same voice from the hospital.

And when I opened the door—

The man standing there was holding a DNA test envelope.
