Chapter 2: The Woman I Thought I Knew

Claire didn’t run.

That was what bothered me most.

A person who had just been accused of something horrible should have looked shocked.

Angry.

Confused.

Claire looked prepared.

She walked into the nursery slowly, placing one hand on the doorframe.

“Daniel,” she said again.

“What is happening?””

I stared at her.

“What happened to Maya?””

Her expression changed instantly.

Not guilt.

Hurt.

The kind of hurt she had mastered over twelve years of marriage.

“Maya told you something, didn’t she?””

I looked at her carefully.

“How do you know?””

She paused.

Only for half a second.

But I noticed.

“I mean…” she said.

“She’s upset. She’s been acting strangely.””

Maya pushed herself against the wall.

“That’s not true.””

Claire looked at her.

“Please don’t do this.””

“Do what?”” Maya asked.

“Destroy this family because you’re angry.””

My jaw tightened.

“Maya was tied up.””

Claire looked at the rope marks around Maya’s wrists.

Then she sighed.

“I know.””

The answer was so calm that it scared me.

“You know?””

Claire walked closer.

“I found her like this.””

Maya laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You found me?””

Claire ignored her.

“She was supposed to be watching the babies. I came upstairs and she was acting strange.””

“Then why didn’t you untie her?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was scared.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

I had spent years loving this woman.

I knew every expression.

Every movement.

But standing there, I realized something terrifying.

I didn’t recognize her.

“Maya said you tied her up.””

Claire shook her head slowly.

“Daniel, listen to yourself.””

Her voice softened.

“You flew home after nine days away. You walk into our daughter’s room and believe a stranger over your wife?””

Maya immediately said, “I’m not a stranger.””

Claire looked at her.

“You’ve been here eight weeks.””

That sentence hit harder than it should have.

Because it was true.

Maya was new to our home.

Claire was my wife.

The mother of my children.

My brain wanted to protect Claire.

My instincts wanted to believe Maya.

And that conflict made me angry.

“Everyone stop.””

My voice echoed through the nursery.

Both women went silent.

I stepped toward the babies.

Lily was sleeping peacefully.

Emma’s tiny hand was curled around the carrier strap.

They looked completely unaware that their entire world had just cracked open.

“Claire,” I said quietly.

“Yes?””

“Where are the girls’ cameras?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

“The cameras?””

“The nursery cameras.””

We had installed them before the twins were born.

I checked them every night when I traveled.

Claire looked away.

“Daniel, this isn’t the time.””

“Where are they?””

She crossed her arms.

“Maya probably unplugged them.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Claire turned.

“Excuse me?””

“I never touched them.””

“Then explain why they’re off.””

I looked between them.

“Off?””

Claire nodded.

“They stopped working yesterday.””

Yesterday.

The word stayed in my mind.

I had video-called Claire last night.

She had been sitting in the nursery.

She had held Emma up to the camera.

She had smiled.

Everything looked normal.

But now I remembered something.

The angle.

The background.

The camera was never visible.

“Daniel,” Claire said gently.

“Please.””

She reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

The hurt on her face looked real.

Almost too real.

“I don’t know what Maya told you,” she whispered.

“But I know one thing.””

She looked directly at me.

“She is trying to take your children away from you.””

Maya’s face went pale.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“She has been obsessed with the girls.””

“That’s a lie.””

“She keeps saying she feels like they’re her own.””

I looked at Maya.

“Maya?””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

That hesitation frightened me.

“Sir…”

Before she could finish, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Is this Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is St. Joseph’s Hospital.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

The man hesitated.

“We have a patient here named Noah Reyes.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“My son.””

The voice continued.

“He listed Maya Reyes as his emergency contact. We’ve been trying to reach her for hours.””

I looked at Maya.

Claire looked at me.

Then the hospital employee said:

“Mr. Carter, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The person who brought him here told us she was Maya’s employer.””

I turned slowly toward Claire.

The room went silent.

The voice continued.

“She said Maya was unavailable because she was out of town.””

Claire’s face went completely still.

And I realized something.

My wife had lied.

May you like

Not just tonight.

Hours ago.
