Chapter 9: The Last Lie Robert Told
The police searched the property for nearly forty minutes.
Rebecca had disappeared through the rear entrance during the blackout.
The original will was gone.
Daniel insisted that someone had taken it deliberately.
Detective Harper ordered the surrounding roads blocked.
Marcus stood near the fireplace, staring at the empty wooden box.
"How did she know?""
Nobody answered.
Ethan paced the room.
"She knew the lights would go out.""
Laura looked toward the back door.
"She planned this.""
Marcus turned.
"Do you think she was working with Robert?""
Laura shook her head.
"I don't know anymore.""
Daniel approached.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
Marcus looked at him.
"About what?""
"The will.""
"What about it?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Claire's original estate documents contain a clause that may change everything.""
Marcus sighed.
"Please tell me there isn't another secret.""
"There is.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
"Claire didn't leave the children twelve million dollars.""
Marcus looked up.
"What?""
"She left them a controlling interest in the company.""
Ethan frowned.
"How much?""
"Sixty percent.""
The room fell silent.
Marcus stared.
"That isn't possible. I own the company.""
"On paper, yes. But Claire transferred the shares into a family trust before she died.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why?""
"Because she discovered Robert was using the company to conceal fraudulent transactions. She wanted to protect the business from him.""
Laura looked at the documents.
"So Robert wasn't trying to steal twelve million dollars.""
Daniel nodded.
"He was trying to gain control of the entire company.""
Marcus finally understood.
The missing money.
The fake assault.
The trust amendment.
The children being hidden.
Everything had been connected.
Robert didn't simply want an inheritance.
He wanted control.
And Claire had built an entire legal structure to stop him.
Detective Harper approached.
"We've received information from airport security.""
Marcus turned.
"Robert?""
"He purchased a ticket under another name. But he hasn't boarded.""
"Where is he?""
"Unknown.""
Daniel looked at his watch.
"We need to secure the company records before he reaches them.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why?""
"Because if Robert gets access to the original trust documents, he could attempt to transfer the shares.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Can he?""
"Not legally. But he has people inside the company.""
Laura stepped forward.
"Then we need to find those people.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus looked at his three children.
Three children he had never known he had.
One raised under his roof.
One hidden across the country.
And one raised by strangers.
He had spent years thinking he was protecting his family.
He hadn't realized how many people had been working against it.
At 2:30 PM, Marcus returned to the family headquarters.
The building stood in the center of downtown, a glass tower bearing the Hale Group name.
He had founded the company with his father thirty years earlier.
Robert had joined ten years later.
Together, they had turned a small regional investment firm into a national business.
Now Marcus was beginning to wonder how much of that success had been built on stolen money.
Daniel walked beside him.
Detective Harper followed with two officers.
Ethan and Laura remained at the house under police protection.
Marcus entered the executive floor.
His assistant, Margaret, stood from her desk.
"Mr. Hale.""
He stopped.
"Where is Robert?""
Margaret looked nervous.
"He hasn't been in today.""
"Has anyone contacted him?""
She hesitated.
"His office requested access to the financial archives this morning.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who requested it?""
"Mr. Daniel's office.""
Everyone turned toward Daniel.
He looked stunned.
"What?""
Margaret opened her computer.
"The request came from your account, sir.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Show me.""
She turned the monitor.
The request had been submitted at 8:12 AM.
It authorized access to the original trust documents, the company's historical financial records, and the children's beneficiary files.
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't submit this.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Someone has your credentials.""
Daniel examined the request.
Then he noticed the final approval.
His digital signature.
He went pale.
"Someone has access to my signing certificate.""
Marcus turned toward Margaret.
"Who else can access the archives?""
"Only the executive board, legal department, and your brother.""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Then let's find out who used it.""
They entered the archive room.
A technician was already waiting.
He opened the access logs.
"Someone downloaded the original files at 8:19 AM.""
Marcus leaned closer.
"Who?""
The technician hesitated.
Then he turned the screen.
The user ID belonged to a senior executive.
*MARGARET ELLIS.*
Marcus slowly turned toward his assistant.
She wasn't there.
Her desk was empty.
"Where is she?""
A receptionist answered from the doorway.
"She left about ten minutes ago.""
Daniel immediately called security.
"Lock down the building.""
But the technician interrupted.
"There's another thing.""
He opened a second log.
The same account had accessed a private video archive.
A recording from the night Claire died.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"Play it.""
The screen showed the company parking garage.
Claire entered at 7:42 PM.
She was carrying the leather document case.
Robert's car appeared at 7:51 PM.
A few minutes later, another person entered.
A woman.
Marcus leaned closer.
It was Margaret.
She walked toward Claire's car.
Then she opened the passenger door.
She placed something inside.
Marcus felt his blood turn cold.
"What did she put there?""
The technician enlarged the image.
A small black device.
A tracking transmitter.
Daniel whispered:
"She was tracking Claire.""
The video continued.
Robert appeared.
He spoke to Margaret.
She handed him a folder.
Then Robert drove away.
Claire followed him.
Marcus stared at the screen.
His wife hadn't simply been involved in an accident.
She had been led into a trap.
Detective Harper immediately called her team.
"We need an arrest warrant for Margaret Ellis.""
Marcus looked at the footage.
"Find her.""
At 4:05 PM, Ethan called.
"Dad?""
Marcus answered immediately.
"Are you safe?""
"Yes.""
"Where are you?""
"At the house.""
"Good. Stay there.""
Ethan hesitated.
"There's something I need to tell you.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Please don't tell me there's another secret.""
Ethan gave a weak laugh.
"I wish.""
"What happened?""
"I found a letter in the old bedroom.""
Marcus frowned.
"Which bedroom?""
"Mom's.""
"What letter?""
"It's addressed to me.""
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Read it.""
Ethan took a breath.
"Dear Ethan. If you're reading this, then you've finally learned about your sisters.""
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
Ethan continued.
"There's something else you need to know. Your father didn't adopt you because Rebecca couldn't raise you.""
Marcus stopped breathing.
"Then why?""
Ethan looked at the letter.
"Because Robert tried to take me when I was a baby.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"What?""
Ethan continued.
"Mom wrote that Robert wanted custody of me because he believed I was his biological son. He thought I would eventually inherit the company.""
Marcus stared at Daniel.
Ethan's voice trembled.
"Mom refused. She took me and disappeared for three days. When she returned, she asked you to adopt me.""
Marcus felt tears fill his eyes.
"She protected you.""
"Yes.""
"She loved you.""
"I know.""
Ethan paused.
Then he said something else.
"There's a second page.""
Marcus waited.
Ethan read:
Your biological father may have given you life, but Marcus gave you a home. Never confuse the two.
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then Ethan whispered:
"Dad?""
"I'm here.""
"Am I still your son?""
Marcus's voice broke.
"You're my son. You were my son before I knew the truth, and you'll be my son long after everyone else has disappeared.""
Ethan began crying.
Marcus did too.
Then Ethan said:
"There's something else in the letter.""
"What?""
"Mom wrote that the third child wasn't supposed to be Laura.""
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Ethan turned the page.
"She said there was another baby.""
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"Another?""
Ethan nodded.
"Mom was pregnant with four children.""
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
Marcus whispered:
"Four?""
Ethan continued.
"One baby died during delivery. Mom said she never told anyone because Robert had already begun looking for the other three.""
Marcus leaned against the desk.
He couldn't understand.
How many secrets could one family contain?
Then Ethan read the final sentence.
If Robert ever returns, ask him what happened to the fourth baby.
The call ended abruptly.
Marcus stared at the phone.
"Ethan?""
No answer.
He called again.
The line was busy.
Then a message arrived.
A photograph.
Ethan was standing in the living room.
Behind him was a man wearing a dark jacket.
The man had one hand on Ethan's shoulder.
And in his other hand was a gun.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
Come alone, Marcus. Bring the original trust document.
A second message appeared.
You have thirty minutes.
Marcus looked up.
Daniel had already read the message.
"We're calling the police.""
Marcus shook his head.
"They'll kill him.""
Detective Harper stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale, this is exactly what they want.""
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
His son was terrified.
He could see it in his eyes.
"I'm not losing another child.""
Daniel grabbed his arm.
"Marcus, wait.""
Marcus turned.
Daniel held out a small black USB drive.
"I found something in the archive.""
"What?""
"An original recording from Claire's hospital room.""
Marcus stared.
Daniel continued.
"It was made twenty-seven years ago. The night the children were born.""
Marcus took the drive.
"Why are you giving me this now?""
Daniel's expression was haunted.
"Because I finally understand what Claire was trying to tell us.""
He looked toward the door.
"The fourth child wasn't stillborn.""
Marcus froze.
Daniel whispered:
"Robert took that baby.""
At 4:31 PM, Marcus entered the abandoned Hale warehouse alone.
At least, that was what Robert believed.
The warehouse had been closed for years.
Its windows were covered with plywood, and the loading doors were chained shut.
Marcus carried a leather briefcase.
Inside was a fake copy of Claire's trust agreement.
The original remained with Detective Harper.
His phone was recording.
Daniel had insisted that the police maintain a safe distance until Ethan was located.
Marcus had refused to wait outside.
He entered through the side door.
The warehouse smelled of dust and oil.
A single light hung over the center of the room.
Robert stood beneath it.
He looked older than Marcus remembered.
His hair had gone gray.
His face was thinner.
But his smile was exactly the same.
"Hello, brother.""
Marcus stopped several feet away.
"Where is Ethan?""
Robert glanced toward the dark corner.
"Safe.""
"Bring him out.""
"First, the documents.""
Marcus placed the briefcase on a metal table.
Robert opened it.
He examined the papers.
Then he laughed.
"Still trying to protect everyone, aren't you?""
Marcus stared at him.
"Why did you kill Claire?""
Robert's smile faded.
"I didn't kill her.""
"I heard the recording.""
"Then you heard a man trying to manage a disaster.""
"She was alive.""
Robert looked away.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Marcus stepped closer.
"You left her on the road.""
Robert said nothing.
"You knew she was alive.""
"I didn't know.""
"You're lying.""
Robert slammed the briefcase shut.
"Do you have any idea what she was doing to me?""
Marcus stared.
"She discovered you were stealing.""
"She was going to destroy everything!""
"Everything you stole.""
Robert laughed bitterly.
"I built that company with you!""
"And Claire protected it.""
Robert's face twisted.
"Claire was going to hand control to three children who couldn't even manage their own lives.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You were willing to destroy your family for money.""
Robert leaned forward.
"Your family?""
He laughed.
"Marcus, you have no idea who your family is.""
Then he gestured toward the darkness.
A figure stepped into the light.
Ethan.
His hands were tied.
His lip was bleeding again.
Marcus took a step.
"Son.""
Robert raised a gun.
"Stay where you are.""
Marcus froze.
Robert smiled.
"Now we're finally having an honest conversation.""
Marcus looked at his brother.
"What do you want?""
Robert's expression hardened.
"The original trust. The company. And the one thing Claire took from me.""
Marcus swallowed.
"What?""
Robert leaned closer.
"My child.""
Marcus stared.
"Which one?""
Robert smiled.
"The fourth.""
He paused.
May you like
Then he said:
"And he's been living in your house for twenty-one years.""
