Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew About Claire's Secret

At 10:17 PM, Daniel Reeves arrived at the house.

He had been Marcus's attorney for nearly fifteen years, long before Vanessa entered the picture.

Daniel was a tall man in his early sixties, with silver hair, a permanent crease between his eyebrows, and the unsettling habit of reading documents without looking at the person who handed them to him.

He entered the dining room carrying a leather briefcase.

"Marcus, you sounded serious on the phone.""

"I am.""

Daniel noticed Ethan's swollen lip.

"What happened?""

"Ask Vanessa.""

Vanessa sat on the sofa with a glass of water.

Her red dress was torn near the shoulder. She had changed into a white silk blouse, but the makeup around her eyes was still smudged.

She looked exhausted.

And dangerous.

"Daniel," she said softly, "I'm glad you're here. Perhaps you can help Marcus understand that this has gone too far.""

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

"Understand what?""

"His son has been secretly recording me.""

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"Is that true?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I caught her searching Mom's bedroom.""

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"Claire's bedroom?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I was cleaning.""

"At eleven minutes past nine on Tuesday night?""

Her expression flickered.

Marcus noticed.

"How do you know the time?""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"Because I received an unusual call from your house security company three days ago.""

Marcus frowned.

"What call?""

"They reported a request to disable one of the internal motion sensors in the east wing.""

Vanessa put down her glass.

Daniel continued.

"The request came from someone using your wife's access code.""

Marcus looked at her.

"You disabled the sensor?""

"I didn't.""

"Then who did?""

"I have no idea.""

Daniel removed a printed sheet from his briefcase.

"Vanessa, the request was submitted from your personal account.""

She laughed nervously.

"That doesn't prove anything. Anyone could have used my password.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's possible.""

He placed the paper on the table.

"Which is why I asked the company to preserve the access logs.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"What did they find?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Someone disabled the sensor for exactly fourteen minutes.""

Ethan looked at his father.

"That's when the first person entered Mom's bedroom.""

Daniel's eyes moved toward him.

"You have footage?""

Ethan unlocked his phone.

"Yes.""

He played the recording.

The first few seconds showed an empty room.

Then the door opened.

A woman entered.

She wore a dark coat and carried a handbag.

Her face was partially hidden by a scarf.

She closed the door, walked directly toward Claire's dresser, and pulled open the bottom drawer.

She wasn't searching randomly.

She knew exactly where to look.

She removed a small envelope, examined it, then placed it inside her handbag.

After that, she stood beside Claire's photograph.

She said something.

The microphone picked up only a few words.

"Almost finished, Claire.""

Then she left.

The room remained empty for eleven minutes.

And then Vanessa appeared.

Marcus sat down slowly.

"Who was that woman?""

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel paused the video.

"Let me see that again.""

He replayed the clip.

This time, he enlarged the image.

The woman's face became clearer as she turned toward the camera.

Daniel went completely still.

Marcus noticed.

"Daniel?""

The attorney didn't respond.

He watched the woman walk toward the door.

Then he paused the image.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa stood up.

"What?""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Do you recognize her?""

Marcus studied the screen.

His eyes narrowed.

Then his face changed.

"No.""

Daniel turned the phone slightly.

"Look carefully.""

Marcus leaned forward.

A few seconds passed.

Then he whispered a name.

"Rebecca?""

Ethan frowned.

"Who is Rebecca?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He seemed to be looking through years of memories.

"Rebecca was Claire's younger sister.""

Vanessa's glass slipped from her hand.

It hit the carpet and rolled beneath the coffee table.

Daniel looked at her.

"You know her?""

Vanessa quickly shook her head.

"No.""

But her voice was barely audible.

Marcus turned.

"Why are you reacting like that?""

"I'm not.""

"You dropped your glass.""

"Because you keep accusing me of things!""

Daniel removed his glasses.

"Rebecca died four years ago.""

Ethan looked between them.

"Then who was that woman?""

Nobody answered.

Daniel replayed the video.

The woman turned toward the camera again.

This time, the resemblance was unmistakable.

Same dark hair.

Same narrow face.

Same small scar near the left eyebrow.

Marcus stood.

"Call the police.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Wait!""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Ethan.

Finally, her eyes returned to Marcus.

"I know who that woman is.""

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Her name is Laura.""

Marcus frowned.

"Laura who?""

"Laura Bennett.""

Daniel stared at her.

"How do you know that name?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Because she's my friend.""

Silence.

Marcus looked at her as if she had just spoken another language.

"Your friend?""

Vanessa nodded.

"We met several years ago. Before I married you.""

"How long have you known her?""

"About five years.""

"Five years?""

"Yes.""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Then why did you tell us you didn't recognize her?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"Because I didn't want to explain.""

"Explain what?""

She took a breath.

"Laura was helping me.""

"With what?""

"With the documents.""

Daniel's face became expressionless.

"Which documents?""

Vanessa glanced at Marcus.

"Claire's documents.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"You knew she was going into Mom's room?""

Vanessa snapped.

"I didn't tell her to steal anything!""

"But you knew.""

"Yes!""

The admission echoed through the dining room.

Marcus slowly approached her.

"Why?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because she said Claire had left something behind. Something valuable.""

"What?""

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not lying!""

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

"Marcus, before we go any further, I need to ask something important.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"Did Claire ever establish a private trust separate from your marital estate?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Not that I know of.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"She did.""

Marcus went completely still.

"What?""

"Shortly before her death, Claire created a private family trust.""

Ethan looked stunned.

"Why didn't Dad know?""

Daniel glanced at him.

"Because your mother specifically instructed that the trust remain confidential until a particular condition was met.""

Marcus's face tightened.

"What condition?""

Daniel closed the briefcase.

"Your twenty-first birthday.""

Ethan stared.

"My birthday?""

"Yes.""

Ethan shook his head.

"But Mom died when I was sixteen.""

"Correct.""

Marcus gripped the back of a chair.

"Daniel, what exactly did my wife leave?""

The attorney took a slow breath.

"An investment portfolio, several properties, and a substantial amount of money.""

"How much?""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Approximately twelve million dollars.""

Nobody moved.

Twelve million.

Marcus sat down.

Ethan stared at the floor.

Vanessa, however, was watching Daniel with a different expression.

It wasn't surprise.

It was recognition.

Marcus noticed.

"Did you know about this?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Then why do you look like you expected him to say something?""

"I don't!""

Daniel ignored her.

"There's another problem.""

Marcus looked up.

"What now?""

"Claire named a beneficiary.""

"Who?""

Daniel glanced at Ethan.

"Your son.""

Ethan's lips parted.

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"However, the trust contains a special provision. If the beneficiary dies before the age of twenty-five, the remaining assets pass to a designated secondary beneficiary.""

Ethan frowned.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Vanessa.""

The room seemed to lose all its air.

Marcus stared at his attorney.

"You're telling me my wife is the secondary beneficiary of Claire's twelve-million-dollar trust?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

Ethan took a step backward.

"Why would Mom leave her anything?""

Daniel shook his head.

"She didn't choose Vanessa personally. She named the position of surviving spouse under a specific condition.""

Marcus looked at the document.

"Which condition?""

Daniel placed a copy on the table.

"The beneficiary must die before twenty-five without leaving descendants.""

Marcus pushed the paper away.

"That's insane.""

"It's legally valid.""

Ethan stared at Vanessa.

"How old am I?""

"Twenty-one," she replied.

"Exactly.""

Marcus stood abruptly.

"Nobody is touching that money. Nobody is changing anything. Daniel, I want the trust protected immediately.""

Daniel nodded.

"I can initiate a preservation order first thing tomorrow.""

"Tonight.""

"I'll make the calls.""

Vanessa suddenly began shaking her head.

"Marcus, you're making a mistake.""

He looked at her.

"Which part?""

"You think I'm interested in your son's money?""

Ethan laughed without humor.

"You were literally offering me three hundred thousand dollars to disappear.""

"That was a settlement!""

"Then why did you fake an assault?""

Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

"Because I was frightened!""

Marcus didn't respond.

Daniel gathered the documents.

"There's something else you should see.""

He removed a second envelope from his briefcase.

It was old.

The edges were yellowed, and the handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

Claire's handwriting.

He reached for it with trembling fingers.

"Where did you get this?""

"Your family solicitor kept it in a separate archive. He recently discovered it while reviewing the original estate papers.""

Marcus stared at the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Not Ethan's.

Not Daniel's.

His.

He opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

Marcus began reading silently.

His expression changed with every line.

Finally, he stopped.

"What does it say?"" Ethan asked.

Marcus looked at his son.

Then at Vanessa.

His voice broke slightly.

"Claire knew.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Knew what?""

Marcus turned the letter around.

At the bottom, Claire had written one sentence.

If Marcus ever marries again, please make sure he knows what happened the night I died.

Ethan's face drained of color.

"What happened the night Mom died?""

Marcus looked at the date on the letter.

It had been written six months before Claire's death.

And beneath the sentence was another line.

A name.

Rebecca Bennett.

Daniel sat back.

"That's why she was looking for the envelope.""

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the letter.

"Give me that!""

Marcus pulled it away.

"Don't touch it!""

Her expression transformed.

The tears were gone.

The trembling had stopped.

And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked directly at Marcus without pretending to be afraid.

"You don't understand what you're opening.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Then explain it.""

She said nothing.

Instead, she reached into her handbag.

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

"What are you doing?""

Vanessa removed her phone.

She opened a message.

Then she turned the screen toward Marcus.

There was one sentence.

The original plan has failed. Activate the second option.

Marcus looked up.

"Who sent this?""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the phone.

She whispered two words.

"Your brother.""

Marcus went completely still.

"My brother?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Robert.""

And just as Marcus reached for the phone, it began ringing.

May you like

The caller's name appeared on the screen.

*ROBERT HALE.*
