Chapter 5: The Woman Who Raised His Daughter
Marcus grabbed Vanessa's wrist.
"Where is she?""
Vanessa winced.
"Let go.""
"Tell me where my daughter is!""
"I don't know her exact address!""
Ethan stepped between them.
"Dad, let her speak.""
Marcus released her.
Vanessa straightened her coat.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely exhausted.
"Robert has been paying someone to watch Sophie for years," she said.
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"How convenient.""
Vanessa ignored the remark.
"After Claire died, Robert told me the family had a serious problem. He said there was a young woman who could destroy everything if she discovered her real identity.""
Marcus stared at her.
"And you believed him?""
"At first.""
"What changed?""
Vanessa looked at the photograph in her hand.
"I met her.""
Ethan frowned.
"You met Sophie?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Six months ago.""
Marcus felt his knees weaken.
"Where?""
"At a charity event.""
"How did you recognize her?""
"Robert showed me pictures. He said she was the daughter Claire had given away.""
Marcus's face twisted.
"And you didn't tell me?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"I was going to.""
"When?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus took a step closer.
"Did you speak to her?""
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
Vanessa looked down.
"She asked me if I knew anything about her biological parents.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Ethan's voice trembled.
"What did you tell her?""
"That I didn't.""
"Why?""
"Because Robert told me not to.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"So you obeyed my brother.""
"I was afraid of him.""
"Afraid enough to help him?""
Vanessa looked up.
"You don't understand what Robert is capable of.""
"Then explain it.""
She hesitated.
Then she pulled a second photograph from her handbag.
It showed a younger Robert standing beside Claire.
But there was something unusual about the picture.
Claire was holding a folder.
Robert's hand was resting on her shoulder.
And on the back, Claire had written:
The person I trusted most became the person I feared most.
Marcus stared.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Robert's office.""
"Why were you there?""
"Because I wanted to find out what he was hiding.""
Ethan folded his arms.
"You expect us to believe you suddenly became concerned about Sophie?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"No. I expect you to understand that I made a terrible mistake.""
"You made several.""
"I know.""
Marcus took the photograph.
"Why did Robert want Sophie hidden?""
Vanessa sat down on a metal chair.
"Because Claire had changed her will.""
Daniel's earlier explanation returned to Marcus.
The trust.
The twelve million dollars.
The amendment naming Robert as the secondary beneficiary.
Vanessa continued.
"Claire discovered that Robert had been transferring money from one of the family investment companies into private accounts. She confronted him. He told her he was protecting the business.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Robert wouldn't steal from me.""
Vanessa gave him a tired look.
"Then why was he so desperate to find Claire's documents?""
Marcus said nothing.
"Claire threatened to expose him. She had evidence. But Robert knew that if she went to the police, the company would collapse.""
Ethan frowned.
"What does Sophie have to do with it?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Everything.""
She reached into her handbag and produced another document.
It was a photocopy of a trust amendment.
Marcus scanned it.
Then his eyes stopped at a paragraph near the bottom.
The designated successor beneficiary was not Robert.
It was Sophie.
Marcus looked up.
"Daniel said Robert was the secondary beneficiary.""
"He was.""
"Then what is this?""
Vanessa pointed to the date.
"Claire changed it two weeks before she died.""
Marcus read the clause again.
The original amendment had been superseded.
Sophie was now the designated successor.
Robert's name had been removed.
Ethan stared.
"Then why did Daniel tell us otherwise?""
"Because he hasn't seen this version.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Where is the original?""
"Robert has it.""
"Why?""
"Because he stole it.""
Marcus slowly folded the paper.
Everything was beginning to make sense.
Robert had discovered that Claire planned to leave control of the trust to Sophie.
He had hidden the daughter.
He had manipulated Vanessa.
And he had spent years keeping Marcus unaware of the truth.
But one question remained.
"Why did you help him?""
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Answer me.""
She swallowed.
"Because Robert promised me something.""
"What?""
"That once Ethan turned twenty-one, he would make sure I received enough money to leave this marriage comfortably.""
Ethan laughed.
"So you were waiting for me to turn twenty-one?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Robert told me that Claire's trust would eventually become available. He said the family needed to be reorganized before that happened.""
Marcus stared at her.
"And the three hundred thousand?""
Vanessa's eyes dropped.
"Robert gave it to me.""
"From my safe?""
She nodded.
"He said it was temporary.""
"Then why did you offer it to Ethan?""
"Because I needed him out of the house.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"You tried to buy me.""
"I was trying to protect myself.""
"From what?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"From what Robert planned to do next.""
Marcus leaned against the metal cabinet.
"What did he plan?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"He wanted Ethan declared mentally unstable.""
Ethan went still.
"What?""
"He had been collecting reports. Statements. Recordings. He wanted to convince a court that you weren't capable of managing your inheritance.""
Ethan shook his head.
"That's insane.""
"Robert had a doctor willing to sign the evaluation.""
Marcus felt sick.
"And the assault?""
Vanessa nodded.
"It was supposed to be the beginning.""
Ethan looked at her.
"You were going to make it look like I attacked you.""
Vanessa couldn't meet his eyes.
"Yes.""
Marcus turned away.
For a moment, he couldn't look at either of them.
He had brought this woman into his home.
He had trusted her with his son.
He had given her access to his office, his finances, and the private memories of the woman he had loved.
And she had used all of it.
An hour later, Daniel arrived with two police officers.
Vanessa agreed to provide a statement, but only after Daniel warned her that cooperating did not erase her involvement.
The officers photographed the documents and secured the storage unit.
Marcus insisted on keeping the photograph of Sophie.
He couldn't stop looking at it.
"She's beautiful," he whispered.
Ethan stood beside him.
"She looks like Mom.""
Marcus nodded.
"She has Claire's eyes.""
For the first time that night, he smiled.
Then his phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He opened the message.
If you want to meet your daughter, come alone. Tomorrow. 9 AM. Riverside Hotel.
There was a second message.
Don't bring Daniel. Don't bring Ethan. And don't tell Vanessa.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Ethan noticed.
"Who is it?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then he showed him.
Ethan read the messages.
"That's a trap.""
"Maybe.""
"Definitely.""
Marcus looked toward the police officers.
"We need to find out who sent it.""
Daniel examined the number.
"I'll have it traced.""
Vanessa, who had been sitting near the entrance, suddenly stood.
"Don't go.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"Please. Don't meet that person.""
"Why?""
She looked terrified.
"Because that's how Robert gets people to disappear.""
Ethan frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Vanessa approached them.
"Two months ago, a man who worked for Robert stopped answering his phone. He had been helping Claire before she died.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Who?""
"His name was Peter Lawson.""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"Peter was Claire's private investigator.""
Marcus stared.
"He's alive?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes. But Robert doesn't know where he is.""
Daniel took out his phone.
"Peter Lawson disappeared from the public record two years ago. I thought he had retired.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He didn't retire. He was hiding.""
Marcus looked at her.
"From Robert?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she gave him an address.
A small apartment building on the east side of the city.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"That's where Claire's old accountant lived.""
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
His daughter was alive.
And somewhere in the city, there was a man who knew why his wife had hidden her.
At 8:30 the following morning, Marcus and Daniel arrived at the apartment building.
Ethan stayed behind with the police.
The building was old, with peeling paint and a broken elevator.
They climbed three flights of stairs.
Apartment 306.
Marcus knocked.
Nothing.
Daniel knocked again.
A man's voice answered.
"Who is it?""
"Daniel Reeves.""
Silence.
Then the door opened a few inches.
An elderly man with gray hair appeared.
His eyes widened when he saw Marcus.
"Mr. Hale?""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Peter Lawson?""
The man nodded.
Daniel introduced himself.
"We need to talk about Claire.""
Peter looked down the hallway.
Then he opened the door.
"Get inside.""
The apartment was dark.
Files covered the dining table.
Photographs were pinned to a corkboard.
There were bank statements, medical records, and handwritten notes.
And on the wall was a photograph of Sophie.
Marcus walked toward it.
"Where did you get this?""
Peter followed his gaze.
"She was twenty-three in that picture.""
Marcus touched the edge of the photograph.
"Is she safe?""
Peter hesitated.
"That depends.""
"On what?""
"On whether Robert knows you've found me.""
Marcus turned.
"Robert knows everything.""
Peter closed his eyes.
"Then we're already late.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What happened to Claire?""
Peter stared at him.
Then he looked at Marcus.
"Your wife didn't die because of a car accident.""
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"I know.""
Peter shook his head.
"No, sir. You don't.""
He walked to the table and opened a thick folder.
Inside was a photograph of Claire's car.
The front passenger door was damaged.
A second vehicle was visible in the background.
Marcus leaned forward.
"What is that?""
"Robert's car.""
Daniel stared.
Peter continued.
"Your brother followed Claire that night. He wanted the documents she was carrying. There was a confrontation on the road.""
Marcus gripped the table.
"Did he cause the accident?""
Peter looked at him.
"I have evidence that he deliberately forced her vehicle off the road.""
Marcus's breath caught.
"Then why wasn't he arrested?""
"Because someone changed the original police report.""
"Who?""
Peter looked toward the apartment door.
Then he reached into a drawer and removed a small audio recorder.
"Before I answer that, you need to hear what Robert said after the crash.""
He pressed play.
A man's voice filled the apartment.
Robert.
"Is she dead?""
Another voice answered.
"She's unconscious.""
"Where's the girl?""
"She's not here.""
"Find her.""
"Robert, we need to call an ambulance.""
A pause.
Then Robert spoke again.
"Forget the ambulance. Find the documents.""
Marcus stumbled backward.
Daniel covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
"Claire was supposed to give me the original agreement. If she didn't, I needed a backup.""
The other man asked, "What about Marcus?""
Robert laughed.
"Marcus will believe whatever I tell him.""
The recording stopped.
Marcus stared at the device.
Then he looked at Peter.
"Who was the other man?""
Peter didn't answer.
Instead, he removed a second photograph from the folder.
It showed a man standing beside Robert.
May you like
Marcus recognized him.
It was Daniel.
