Chapter 6: The Lawyer Who Buried the Truth

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Daniel stood beside Robert outside a hospital entrance.

The date printed beneath it was October 17, four years earlier.

The night Claire died.

Marcus slowly turned toward his attorney.

"Explain.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Marcus...""

"Explain why you're standing beside my brother on the night my wife died.""

Daniel took a breath.

"That photograph doesn't tell the whole story.""

Marcus laughed once.

"That's becoming a familiar excuse.""

Peter stepped away from the table.

"I told you there were people involved.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Peter, you have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then explain the photograph.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Marcus pointed at the image.

"You were supposed to be helping Claire.""

"I was.""

"Then why were you with Robert?""

"Because he called me.""

"When?""

"After the accident.""

Marcus froze.

"After?""

Daniel nodded.

"He said Claire had been involved in a serious crash. He asked me to come to the hospital.""

"And you went?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because when I arrived, Claire was already dead.""

Marcus gripped the back of a chair.

"That doesn't explain anything.""

Daniel removed his glasses.

"Robert told me Claire had been carrying confidential financial documents. He said he needed them recovered before the police became involved.""

Peter shook his head.

"That's not what happened.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"You weren't there.""

"I was the one who found Claire's car.""

Marcus looked between them.

"You found her?""

Peter nodded.

"I was following her that night. She had asked me to meet her after she left the family office.""

"Why?""

"She had discovered Robert was stealing money from the company. She wanted to give me the original records.""

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

"Did she have them?""

Peter opened another folder.

"Not all of them.""

He removed a photograph of a leather document case.

"This was recovered from the roadside.""

Marcus recognized it immediately.

It belonged to Claire.

Peter continued.

"Robert arrived before the emergency services. He searched the car.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"You knew?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I suspected.""

"Suspected?""

"Marcus, listen to me. Robert told me that Claire had been driving recklessly. He said he was trying to protect the company from a scandal.""

"And you believed him?""

"At the time, I didn't know what to believe.""

Peter slammed his hand against the table.

"That's a lie!""

Daniel turned sharply.

"Watch your tone.""

"Claire was alive when I found her!""

Marcus stopped breathing.

"What?""

Peter looked at him.

"She was unconscious, but she was alive. I called emergency services. By the time the ambulance arrived, Robert had already spoken to someone at the hospital.""

Daniel's face went pale.

Marcus grabbed his arm.

"What happened?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me!""

"Marcus, I wasn't there when she died.""

Peter shook his head.

"But you signed the paperwork.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

The room went silent.

Marcus released his arm.

"What paperwork?""

Daniel slowly sat down.

"The hospital requested confirmation of the patient's identity and emergency contacts. Robert said he had already spoken with you.""

Marcus stared.

"He never called me.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you sign?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Because I believed Robert had your authorization.""

Marcus stepped backward.

"You signed something without speaking to me?""

Daniel nodded.

"What did you sign?""

Daniel couldn't answer.

Peter opened another folder.

"An authorization to release Claire's personal effects.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because Robert claimed he needed to secure her documents.""

Daniel spoke quietly.

"I thought I was protecting the family.""

Marcus looked at him.

"You were protecting Robert.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"Yes.""

The admission hung in the air.

Marcus walked to the window.

Outside, the city moved as if nothing had happened.

Cars passed.

People crossed the street.

Somewhere, a child laughed.

And inside that small apartment, Marcus was learning that the two men he had trusted most had both betrayed his wife.

He turned.

"Did Claire know?""

Peter nodded.

"She knew Robert was stealing from the company. She also suspected someone inside the legal office was helping him.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Was it you?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. I never stole from you.""

"But you helped him hide what happened.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Robert told me he had evidence that Claire was planning to move Ethan's inheritance into a private account. He said she was acting irrationally and that he was trying to prevent a family dispute.""

Peter laughed bitterly.

"Robert told everyone a different story.""

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

"Why did you stay silent for four years?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Robert?""

"Yes.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You're a lawyer, Daniel. You were supposed to protect my family.""

"I know.""

"You were supposed to protect Claire.""

"I know.""

"Then you should have told me.""

Daniel looked at him.

"I should have.""

Marcus turned away.

He needed to breathe.

He needed to think.

But every time he closed his eyes, he saw Claire lying in a hospital bed, believing he had abandoned her.

He had never known she was waiting.

Peter placed another document on the table.

"There's something else.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"Claire recorded a statement shortly before the accident.""

"Where is it?""

"Robert took the original.""

Peter paused.

"But I kept a copy.""

He opened a locked drawer and removed a small USB drive.

Daniel stared.

"Peter, you need to be careful with that.""

Peter looked at him.

"Why? Afraid of what it contains?""

He connected the drive to his laptop.

A video appeared.

Claire sat in a quiet room.

Her face looked tired.

Her hair was tied back, and a small bandage covered her wrist.

Marcus felt his knees weaken.

It was the first time he had seen moving footage of his wife in four years.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Claire Hale. I'm making this recording because I don't know who I can trust anymore.""

Marcus covered his mouth.

Claire continued.

"Robert has been stealing money from the company for almost two years. I found transfers totaling more than eight million dollars.""

Daniel looked down.

"He's also been using my name to authorize transactions I never approved.""

Claire paused.

"If anything happens to me, I want Marcus to know that I never agreed to leave him. I never planned to abandon Ethan.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

Tears slipped down his cheeks.

Claire continued.

"There's another reason I'm making this recording.""

She looked down at her hands.

"Sophie.""

Marcus opened his eyes.

His daughter.

Claire's voice trembled.

"I know Marcus believes she died. I let him believe that because I was afraid Robert would use her against us.""

Peter paused the video.

Marcus looked at him.

"Why did you stop?""

Peter pointed at the screen.

"Watch her left hand.""

Claire was wearing a wedding ring.

But beneath it was another ring.

A small silver band with a blue stone.

Marcus recognized it.

It had belonged to Rebecca.

Peter resumed the video.

Claire continued.

"Rebecca helped me arrange Sophie's adoption. She believed it was temporary. We were supposed to bring Sophie home once Robert's investigation was finished.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Then what happened?""

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"Rebecca disappeared.""

Peter paused.

Marcus turned.

"Rebecca was dead.""

Peter shook his head.

"That's what Robert told everyone.""

Marcus stared.

"You're saying she's alive too?""

Peter nodded.

"Claire believed Rebecca had taken Sophie somewhere safe. But after the accident, nobody could find either of them.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Then who was the woman in the bedroom recording?""

Peter looked at the photograph.

"Laura Bennett.""

Marcus frowned.

"Who is she?""

"Rebecca's daughter.""

The room went silent.

Ethan's voice suddenly came through Marcus's phone.

"Dad?""

Marcus had forgotten to call him back.

He answered.

"Ethan.""

"Are you okay?""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"I don't know.""

"What happened?""

"We found Peter. He has a recording from your mother.""

Ethan was silent for a moment.

"Can I hear it?""

"Of course.""

Marcus turned on the speaker.

Peter resumed the video.

Claire's face appeared again.

"If Robert finds out where Sophie is, he will come after her. He doesn't care about money anymore. He's afraid of what she knows.""

Claire took a breath.

"Marcus, if you're watching this, please don't trust the people who tell you that I'm gone.""

The video flickered.

Then Claire said something that made Marcus stand.

"Especially Rebecca.""

The screen went black.

Ethan spoke first.

"Why would Mom say that?""

Peter closed the laptop.

"Because Rebecca wasn't helping her anymore.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Explain.""

Peter took a breath.

"Rebecca had been working with Robert. She helped arrange the adoption, but she also helped him keep Sophie hidden.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why would she do that?""

"Money.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Rebecca was Claire's sister.""

"People do terrible things for money.""

Peter opened a second folder.

"Rebecca received payments from one of Robert's private accounts for years.""

Marcus looked at the statements.

There were dozens of transfers.

The first began shortly after Sophie's birth.

The last was dated three months ago.

Marcus stared.

"She's still receiving money.""

Peter nodded.

"Which means she's still involved.""

Ethan's voice became urgent.

"Dad, where is Sophie now?""

Peter looked at the screen.

"I don't know.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"You said you had been watching her.""

"I was. But two weeks ago, she disappeared from the address I had.""

"Why?""

"Someone warned her.""

"Who?""

Peter hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the apartment door.

"Someone who has been helping her.""

A knock sounded.

Three sharp knocks.

Everyone froze.

Peter moved toward the window.

Daniel stood.

"Don't open it.""

The knock came again.

Then a woman's voice.

"Peter? It's me.""

Peter's face went white.

Marcus recognized the voice.

Vanessa.

Daniel moved toward the door.

Peter grabbed his arm.

"Don't!""

But Vanessa spoke again.

"I know you're inside. Please. I need to talk to Marcus.""

Marcus approached the door.

"How did you find us?""

"I followed you.""

Daniel looked furious.

"You followed us?""

Vanessa ignored him.

"Marcus, please. There's something you need to know.""

Marcus opened the door.

Vanessa stood in the hallway, holding a small brown envelope.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Where have you been?"" Marcus demanded.

"Trying to find Sophie.""

"Why?""

"Because I finally understood what Robert was planning.""

She held out the envelope.

Inside was a printed photograph.

It showed Sophie standing outside a coffee shop.

Beside her was a woman wearing a dark coat.

Marcus recognized the woman immediately.

Rebecca.

But something else caught his attention.

Rebecca was holding a little boy's hand.

A boy who looked about five years old.

Vanessa whispered:

"That's Sophie's son.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"She has a child?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked at the date.

"Two years ago.""

Ethan spoke through the phone.

"Does that mean there's another heir?""

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

"That's what Robert is afraid of.""

Marcus frowned.

"What?""

She pointed to the photograph.

"Claire's trust has a provision that nobody told you about.""

Daniel took the picture.

His eyes moved rapidly across the attached document.

Then he stopped.

"Good God.""

Marcus looked at him.

"What?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"If Sophie has a living child, the secondary-beneficiary clause never takes effect.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"It means Robert can't inherit a single dollar.""

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered something else.

"And that's why he wants the little boy.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The child had dark hair and a small dimple in his left cheek.

He was holding Rebecca's hand.

His other hand was wrapped around a red toy car.

A perfectly ordinary little boy.

A little boy who had somehow become the center of a dangerous inheritance dispute.

"What's his name?"" Marcus asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

"Oliver.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"How old?""

"Five," Vanessa replied.

"Who is his father?""

"I don't know.""

Peter stepped closer.

"Wait.""

He took the photograph from Daniel.

Then he examined the man's reflection in the coffee shop window.

There was someone standing behind Rebecca.

A man wearing a baseball cap.

Peter enlarged the image.

His face changed.

"That's him.""

Marcus frowned.

"Who?""

Peter looked up.

"The man who was driving Robert's car the night Claire died.""

Daniel stepped backward.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Then his phone vibrated.

A new message.

This time, there was no number.

Only a photograph.

It showed Ethan standing outside Marcus's house.

Taken less than five minutes earlier.

Beneath it were six words.

You found the wrong daughter, Marcus.

A second message appeared.

Ask Ethan what he did last Tuesday.

Marcus looked at the phone.

Then slowly raised his eyes toward his son.

Because Ethan had been at home last Tuesday.

May you like

Or at least, that was what he had told his father.

And suddenly, Marcus wasn't sure he knew where his own son had been.
