Chapter 3: The Brother Who Had Been Waiting for Eighteen Months
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
The phone continued vibrating in Vanessa's hand.
Robert Hale.
His younger brother.
The same man who had stood beside him at Claire's funeral, helped him raise Ethan, and promised that he would never let the family fall apart.
The same man who had introduced Marcus to Vanessa eighteen months earlier.
Marcus slowly looked at his wife.
"Give me the phone.""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Marcus—"
"Now.""
She handed it over.
He answered.
"Robert.""
A brief silence followed.
Then a familiar voice came through the speaker.
"Marcus. Finally.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Why are you texting my wife?""
Robert chuckled.
"That's an interesting way to start a conversation.""
"Answer me.""
"Where's Vanessa?""
"She's standing in front of me.""
Another pause.
Then Robert sighed.
"Listen, brother. Whatever she's told you, don't make a decision tonight.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"Why?""
"Because you're upset. You've always been emotional when it comes to Claire.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Don't mention my wife's name.""
Robert laughed softly.
"Which wife?""
The words struck like a slap.
Marcus gripped the phone.
"Watch yourself.""
"Marcus, we've known each other our entire lives. You really think I want to hurt you?""
"I think you know something about the money missing from my safe.""
Robert went quiet.
Then he said, "What money?""
"Three hundred thousand dollars.""
"That's a lot of money to lose.""
"Was it you?""
Robert sighed.
"You're asking the wrong question.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Then tell me the right one.""
Robert's voice dropped.
"Ask your wife why she was in my office last Tuesday.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Marcus turned toward her.
"What office?""
She shook her head.
Robert continued.
"Ask her what she took from my desk.""
Marcus's voice became cold.
"What did she take?""
"An original document.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What document?"" he asked.
Robert seemed to hear him.
"Daniel? Is that you?""
"Yes.""
"Well, this is becoming a family reunion.""
Daniel didn't smile.
"Robert, I suggest you explain yourself.""
Robert laughed.
"You're still protecting Marcus, I see.""
"I'm protecting the truth.""
"Then perhaps you should tell him about the amendment.""
Daniel's expression changed.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What amendment?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus turned toward him.
"Daniel.""
The attorney slowly removed his glasses.
"There's an amendment to Claire's trust.""
"When?""
"Six months before her death.""
"Why wasn't I told?""
"Because Claire instructed me not to disclose it until the trust became active.""
"What does it change?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"It changes the secondary beneficiary.""
Marcus looked confused.
"She named someone else?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"Robert.""
For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.
Then he laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
"My brother?""
Daniel nodded.
"Under the original document, if Ethan dies before twenty-five without descendants, the trust passes to the designated secondary beneficiary. The amendment changed that beneficiary from the surviving spouse to Robert Hale.""
Ethan looked at his father.
"So Vanessa doesn't get the money?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not if the amendment is valid.""
Vanessa suddenly sat down.
Marcus watched her carefully.
"Is that what this has been about?""
She looked up.
"What?""
"The twelve million dollars.""
"No.""
"Then why did you enter Claire's bedroom?""
"I was looking for something else.""
"What?""
She didn't answer.
Robert's voice interrupted through the phone.
"Marcus, I think you should sit down.""
Marcus almost threw the device.
"You're not in a position to give me advice.""
"Actually, I am.""
"Why?""
"Because I know what happened to Claire.""
The room fell silent.
Ethan stepped closer.
"What did you say?""
Robert exhaled.
"Your mother didn't die in an accident.""
Marcus's hand went numb.
He remembered that night.
The rain.
The phone call.
The hospital corridor.
The doctor telling him that Claire's car had left the road on a narrow country lane.
The police report had described it as a single-vehicle accident.
A wet road.
Poor visibility.
No other vehicle involved.
Marcus had never questioned it.
Not seriously.
Not after losing the woman he loved.
He swallowed.
"What are you talking about?""
Robert spoke slowly.
"Claire was planning to leave you.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's a lie.""
"She had been seeing someone.""
"Stop.""
"She wanted a divorce.""
"Stop!""
"She was going to take Ethan and move away.""
Marcus slammed his hand against the dining table.
"SHUT UP!""
Vanessa flinched.
Ethan stared at the phone.
"Who was she seeing?""
Robert didn't answer.
Marcus's breathing became uneven.
"Who?""
Finally, Robert said, "Someone you trusted.""
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at the screen.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ethan spoke.
"Call him back.""
Marcus didn't respond.
" Dad, call him back!""
Marcus looked at his son.
"Your mother would never have left you.""
Ethan's eyes filled.
"I know.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Marcus, we need to be careful. Robert is making claims without evidence.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"Then find the evidence.""
"I will.""
"Tonight.""
Daniel nodded.
Vanessa stood.
"Marcus, please. You have to listen to me.""
He looked at her.
"What could you possibly say?""
She approached slowly.
"Robert is manipulating you.""
"How long have you been speaking to him?""
"That's not the point.""
"How long?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Since before our wedding.""
Marcus stared.
"Before?""
She nodded.
"Robert introduced us, remember?""
"Yes.""
"Well, he continued helping me afterward.""
"Helping you do what?""
"Understand the family.""
Ethan let out a bitter laugh.
"That's a nice way to describe it.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"Robert told me there were complicated things about Claire's estate. He said he was protecting you.""
Marcus's voice lowered.
"And you believed him?""
"I had no reason not to.""
"Did he know about the money?""
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus closed his eyes.
He had known Robert for forty-seven years.
They had grown up sharing a bedroom, stolen money from their father's wallet, and covered for each other during every stupid decision they made as teenagers.
Robert had been his best man.
He had held Ethan at the hospital when Claire gave birth.
And now he was apparently involved in a scheme surrounding his dead wife's inheritance.
Marcus opened his eyes.
"Daniel, I want every document Claire signed in the six months before her death.""
"I'll arrange it.""
"And I want the original accident report.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll contact the police archive.""
Vanessa moved closer.
"Marcus, you can't do this.""
He turned.
"Why not?""
"Because you're going to destroy this family.""
He stared at her.
"You should have thought about that before you started stealing from it.""
Her expression hardened.
"I didn't steal anything.""
"Three hundred thousand dollars disappeared from my safe.""
"Then perhaps Robert took it.""
Marcus paused.
"Why would you say that?""
"Because he had access.""
Ethan looked at her.
"You just said you didn't know anything.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"I never said that.""
"Yes, you did.""
"Stop twisting my words!""
Marcus raised his hand.
"Enough.""
Then he noticed something.
Vanessa's handbag was open.
Inside, he could see the corner of a document.
A familiar cream-colored envelope.
He stepped toward it.
"What's that?""
Vanessa quickly closed the bag.
"Nothing.""
"Show me.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
She took a step back.
Marcus reached for the bag.
She pulled it away.
"Don't touch my things!""
Daniel stepped between them.
"Marcus, let me handle this.""
He turned to Vanessa.
"Mrs. Hale, I strongly recommend you hand over any documents belonging to the estate.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You're not my lawyer.""
"No. But I am the attorney responsible for the estate.""
"Then get a warrant.""
Daniel's expression remained calm.
"I don't need one to ask you to return property that does not belong to you.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're all acting as if I'm some criminal.""
Ethan pointed toward the phone.
"You were caught staging an assault, offering me stolen money, and searching Mom's bedroom. What exactly should we call it?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"You're going to regret this.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Is that a threat?""
She looked at him.
For a second, something ugly passed through her expression.
Then she smiled.
"No, darling. It's a warning.""
She walked toward the staircase.
Marcus followed her with his eyes.
"Where are you going?""
"Upstairs.""
"You're not leaving this house.""
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned.
"You can't keep me here.""
"I'm not trying to.""
"Then move.""
Marcus didn't move.
He simply said, "Daniel will arrange somewhere for you to stay tomorrow. Until then, you're not going anywhere near my study or Claire's bedroom.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she climbed the stairs.
Her heels struck each step with deliberate precision.
When she disappeared around the corner, Ethan finally exhaled.
"Dad.""
Marcus looked at him.
"I'm sorry.""
Ethan frowned.
"For what?""
"For not believing you.""
Ethan's expression softened.
"I tried to tell you.""
"I know.""
"I told you she was doing something.""
"I know.""
Marcus reached toward his son's injured lip.
Ethan pulled away slightly.
"Don't.""
Marcus lowered his hand.
"I'm sorry she hurt you.""
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
"She didn't just hurt me tonight.""
Marcus understood.
His son wasn't talking about the slap.
He was talking about the eighteen months of manipulation.
The constant accusations.
The quiet threats.
The way Vanessa had slowly turned father and son against each other.
Marcus sat down.
"Tell me everything.""
Ethan hesitated.
Then he reached into his pocket and removed a small memory card.
"I didn't tell you about this.""
Marcus looked at it.
"What is it?""
"Something I found in Mom's old jewelry box.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Where did you find it?""
"Inside the lining.""
Ethan placed it on the table.
"There's a recording on it.""
Marcus stared at the tiny card.
"When?""
"Three days before Mom died.""
Marcus's face changed.
"Why didn't you show me earlier?""
Ethan looked down.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of what you'd hear.""
Daniel carefully picked up the card.
"We need to make a copy before playing anything.""
Marcus nodded.
"Do it.""
Daniel connected it to his laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
The date was visible.
October 14.
Three days before Claire's accident.
Daniel pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then Claire's voice.
Marcus's hand flew to his mouth.
He hadn't heard her voice in four years.
Not like this.
Not unexpectedly.
"Robert, you need to listen to me.""
A man's voice answered.
"I've heard enough, Claire.""
"Then you know I'm going to tell Marcus.""
"You're making a mistake.""
"No. I've made mistakes. Trusting you was one of them.""
Marcus stopped breathing.
Robert.
It was Robert's voice.
The recording continued.
"Claire, think about Ethan.""
"I am thinking about Ethan.""
"Then don't destroy his family.""
"You destroyed it when you took the money.""
A chair scraped.
Robert's voice became sharper.
"You don't understand what you're accusing me of.""
"I have the documents.""
"Give them to me.""
"No.""
"Claire.""
"If anything happens to me, Marcus will know everything.""
There was a long silence.
Then Robert spoke again.
His voice was so quiet that Daniel increased the volume.
"Then I suppose we have a problem.""
The recording ended.
Marcus stared at the laptop.
He looked as if someone had reached into his chest and removed something essential.
Ethan whispered, "Dad?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds.
Then he looked at Marcus.
"This changes everything.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Robert was with Claire three days before she died.""
"Yes.""
"And he knew she had documents.""
"Yes.""
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
"Vanessa knew about the recording.""
Ethan frowned.
"What?""
Marcus turned to his son.
"She knew what was in that bedroom. She knew what she was looking for. And she knew Robert had been involved.""
Ethan looked at the memory card.
"Then we need to find the documents.""
Daniel closed his laptop.
"I'll contact the police first thing in the morning.""
"No," Marcus said.
Daniel looked up.
"What do you mean?""
"Tonight.""
"Marcus, we need to proceed carefully.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"My wife died four years ago. My son has been living with a woman who tried to frame him. Three hundred thousand dollars disappeared from my safe, and my brother may have been involved in Claire's death.""
His voice broke.
"I'm done waiting.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then I'll make the call.""
But before he could reach for his phone, a loud crash came from upstairs.
All three men looked toward the staircase.
Then came the sound of a door slamming.
Ethan ran first.
"Dad!""
Marcus followed.
They reached the upper hallway just as the door to Claire's old bedroom swung open.
The room was empty.
The dresser drawers had been pulled out.
The mattress had been lifted.
Claire's framed photograph lay broken on the floor.
And Vanessa was gone.
Marcus rushed to the window.
It was open.
The curtains moved in the cold night air.
"Vanessa!""
No answer.
Ethan ran toward the stairs.
"She must have gone through the back garden!""
Daniel grabbed his phone.
"I'll call the police.""
Marcus stood in the middle of the bedroom.
Then he noticed something.
The small black box was still inside the drawer.
But the key was gone.
He picked up the box.
Beneath it was a photograph he hadn't seen before.
It showed Claire standing beside a young woman.
On the back, Claire had written a date and four words.
The night everything changed.
Marcus turned the photograph over.
The young woman wasn't Vanessa.
It wasn't Rebecca.
It wasn't Laura.
It was a woman Marcus recognized immediately.
His own daughter.
Sophie.
The child he had been told died shortly after birth.
The child Claire had supposedly lost twenty-seven years earlier.
Marcus's fingers began trembling.
Daniel came into the room.
"Marcus? What happened?""
Marcus held up the photograph.
"Who is this?""
Daniel looked at it.
His face went white.
Then he whispered:
"Marcus, I think you need to sit down.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Why?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because Sophie is alive.""
May you like
And somewhere outside the house, a car engine started.
Vanessa had just disappeared with the only key that could reveal where she had been hiding his daughter.
