Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Nia stared at the photograph.

A newborn baby lay wrapped in a white blanket, wearing a tiny blue ribbon around her wrist.

On the back was a handwritten date.

The date was six months before Nia's birth certificate said she had been born.

Her fingers began trembling.

"What is this?"" she whispered.

Richard Reed pulled out a chair and sat down as though he owned the house.

"It's a photograph of you.""

Nia looked at Daniel.

Her father had gone completely pale.

"Tell her," Richard said.

Daniel didn't move.

"Daniel?"" Vanessa whispered.

Richard smiled.

"Interesting. You still haven't told her?""

Nia stepped forward.

"Tell me what?""

Richard placed another document on the table.

It was a hospital record.

The name at the top was Evelyn Carter.

Beneath it was a date, a medical facility, and a handwritten note.

Nia couldn't understand what she was looking at.

Richard leaned back.

"Your mother gave birth to a daughter before she married Daniel.""

Nia shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

"Is it?""

"My mother had me when she was married to my father.""

Richard tapped the paper.

"That's what everyone told you.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Richard, stop.""

"Why? She's old enough to know.""

Vanessa looked at Nia.

"Sweetheart, you don't have to listen to him.""

Nia turned toward her.

"Don't call me that.""

Vanessa flinched.

Richard continued.

"Your mother had a child before she met Daniel. That child was placed with another family for a short period.""

Nia stared at the photograph.

"Who?""

Richard smiled.

"That's the interesting part.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Ask your stepmother.""

Nia turned.

Vanessa's lips were trembling.

"Mom?""

Brianna stood frozen near the staircase.

"What's he talking about?""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

"You promised you wouldn't bring this up.""

Richard laughed.

"I promised you many things, Vanessa. Unfortunately, you never kept your promises.""

Nia grabbed the photograph.

"Who is this baby?""

Richard leaned forward.

"You.""

The room went silent.

Nia looked at Daniel.

"Is that true?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Your mother had a pregnancy before she met me. She lost the baby.""

Nia looked at the photograph again.

"Then why is there a hospital record?""

Richard interrupted.

"Because the hospital record doesn't say what your father thinks it says.""

Daniel turned sharply.

"Shut up.""

Richard opened another folder.

"Your mother gave birth to a little girl. The child survived. But there was a medical emergency, and the hospital transferred the baby to another facility.""

Nia felt her knees weaken.

"Where is she now?""

Richard smiled.

"That's the question.""

Vanessa suddenly slammed her hand against the table.

"Enough!""

Everyone turned.

Her face was flushed.

"Richard, you have no right to do this.""

He looked amused.

"You were happy enough to use the information when you needed it.""

Nia stared at her stepmother.

"What information?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Richard removed a final document from his briefcase.

It was a hospital transfer record.

The patient's name was Evelyn Carter.

The infant's name was listed as Baby Girl Carter.

And beneath it appeared the name of the receiving guardian.

*Vanessa Reed.*

Nia's breath caught.

"You?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Richard nodded.

"Vanessa was the person who helped arrange the temporary placement.""

"Why?""

"Because Evelyn was overwhelmed. She was young, struggling financially, and terrified of losing her career.""

Nia looked at the document.

"Did Mom give her baby away?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Evelyn told me she had suffered a miscarriage before we met. She never mentioned another child.""

Richard smiled.

"Because she believed the child was dead.""

Nia looked at Vanessa.

"Was she?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"No.""

The single word seemed to split the room in half.

Nia stepped backward.

"Then where is she?""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

He smiled.

"She's closer than you think.""

Brianna suddenly spoke.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned toward her daughter.

"Go upstairs.""

"What's happening?""

"Go upstairs, Brianna!""

But Brianna didn't move.

Richard opened another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of two little girls standing beside a Christmas tree.

One wore a red dress.

The other wore a blue one.

Nia recognized the red dress.

It was Brianna.

The blue dress belonged to a little girl with dark eyes and a small butterfly hair clip.

Nia looked closer.

The girl's face was familiar.

Her eyes.

Her nose.

The shape of her smile.

She looked almost exactly like the childhood photographs of Nia and her mother.

Richard tapped the photograph.

"Two daughters. One mother. One secret.""

Nia slowly turned toward Brianna.

Brianna looked confused.

Then frightened.

"What?"" she whispered.

Vanessa began crying.

Richard's voice remained cold.

"Your stepsister isn't your stepsister, Nia.""

Nia's mouth went dry.

"What are you saying?""

Richard looked at Brianna.

"She's your biological sister.""

Nobody spoke.

Brianna shook her head.

"No.""

Vanessa reached for her.

"Baby, please.""

"NO!""

Brianna pulled away.

"You're lying!""

Richard shrugged.

"Ask your mother.""

Brianna looked at Vanessa.

"Mom?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

And that was when Nia understood.

The baby in the photograph.

The child her mother had believed was dead.

The girl who had spent years taking everything Nia owned.

Brianna.

Her biological sister.

Nia looked at Daniel.

"Did you know?""

Daniel shook his head desperately.

"No, sweetheart. I swear I didn't.""

Richard stood.

"There's another detail.""

Nia looked at him.

"Of course there is.""

He placed a final document on the table.

It was a private agreement between Vanessa and Richard, dated several months before Vanessa married Daniel.

The agreement contained a payment schedule.

At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.

Nia read the first paragraph.

It stated that Vanessa would receive financial compensation for maintaining custody of the child and keeping the circumstances of her birth confidential.

Nia's hands went numb.

"You were paid?""

Vanessa started sobbing.

"It wasn't like that.""

Nia looked at her.

"You were paid to hide my sister?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I was trying to protect her.""

"From what?""

"From losing everything!""

Richard laughed.

"That's a generous way to describe it.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You told me Evelyn was never going to recover financially!""

"She didn't.""

"You told me the collection was worth millions!""

"It became worth millions.""

"You told me—"

"Enough.""

Richard slammed the briefcase shut.

"Let's stop pretending you're innocent.""

Nia looked between them.

The story was becoming more disturbing with every sentence.

Her mother had apparently believed one daughter was dead.

Her second daughter had been raised by Vanessa.

Richard had known.

Daniel hadn't.

And somehow, the secret had been buried inside the same family that had destroyed Evelyn's career.

Nia finally spoke.

"I want a DNA test.""

Richard shrugged.

"Arrange one.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Nia, please. Let me explain.""

Nia looked at her.

"You had years.""

"I was scared.""

"So was my mother.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Nia picked up the photograph.

"Did Mom ever know Brianna was alive?""

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Richard did.

"She suspected.""

Nia turned toward him.

"How?""

"Because Evelyn received a letter several years later. Someone told her the baby might still be alive.""

Nia's heart began pounding.

"Who sent it?""

Richard reached into his briefcase.

He removed a small envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Evelyn Carter.

Nia recognized her mother's writing immediately.

The envelope was addressed to Margaret Whitmore.

It had never been mailed.

Nia opened it.

Margaret,

I think I have found my daughter.

I don't know whether I should believe what I've been told. Vanessa insists the child is living with a family who can provide everything I cannot.

But I have seen a photograph.

She has my eyes.

If there is even a chance that she's alive, I need to know the truth.

Please help me.

Evelyn.

Nia looked up.

"Why wasn't this sent?""

Richard shrugged.

"Because Vanessa intercepted it.""

Vanessa started crying harder.

Nia turned toward her.

"You knew Mom was looking for Brianna.""

Vanessa whispered:

"Yes.""

"And you stopped her?""

"I didn't want to lose her.""

Nia stared.

"You didn't want to lose her? You had her. You were raising her. You could have told my mother the truth.""

Vanessa had no answer.

Then Brianna suddenly picked up the photograph.

She stared at the little girl in the blue dress.

"Mom, is this why you always told me not to ask about my biological father?""

Vanessa nodded.

Brianna's face collapsed.

"All these years, you knew?""

Vanessa reached for her.

But Brianna stepped away.

"Don't touch me.""

Richard collected his documents.

"Now that everyone understands the situation, we can discuss the collection.""

Nia turned.

"What?""

"The Bluebird Collection. I want the original ownership certificate.""

Nia laughed bitterly.

"You just revealed that my sister is your daughter, and you're still thinking about money?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Business is business.""

Nia looked at him with disgust.

"Get out.""

He adjusted his jacket.

"Think carefully. That certificate is worth a fortune. And if you hand it over, I can make sure the competition complaint disappears.""

Nia stared at him.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't a happy smile.

It was the expression of someone who had finally understood the game.

"You should leave.""

Richard picked up his briefcase.

"You're making a mistake.""

"No. I think my mother made one when she trusted people like you.""

Richard walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

"One more thing, Nia.""

She didn't answer.

"Ask Margaret what happened to the other half of the ownership agreement.""

Then he disappeared.

The front door slammed.

Brianna sank onto the sofa.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Daniel looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Nia held the photograph of the two little girls.

She had entered the house that morning believing her biggest problem was a stolen dress and a competition complaint.

Now she knew her entire family history had been built around a lie.

Her mother had spent years searching for a daughter.

That daughter had been living in the same house.

And nobody had told her.

Nia turned toward Brianna.

"Do you remember anything about your childhood before Vanessa?""

Brianna shook her head.

"I was little.""

"Did you ever meet another woman who looked like me?""

Brianna stared at her.

Then she whispered:

"There's something I've never told Mom.""

Vanessa looked up sharply.

"Brianna.""

But Brianna continued.

"When I was eight, I found an old photograph in her bedroom. It showed a woman holding a baby. The woman looked exactly like you.""

Nia's heart stopped.

"Where is it?""

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

"I don't know. But I remember the back of it.""

"What did it say?""

Brianna looked at Nia.

"Happy first birthday, my little bluebird.""

Nia closed her eyes.

May you like

Her mother had never forgotten.

And somewhere in that house, there was proof that Evelyn had known the truth long before she died.
