Chapter 4: The Signature That Destroyed Her Mother

Nia didn't sleep that night.
Margaret's final words kept repeating in her mind.
Vanessa Reed signed the transfer agreement.
At 6:15 the next morning, Nia was already sitting at her sewing table, staring at the photograph of her mother and Vanessa.
They had stood together in a fashion studio nearly twenty years earlier.
Her mother had been smiling.
Vanessa had been smiling too.
How could someone who had once stood beside Evelyn Carter become the woman who spent every day making her daughter feel worthless?
Nia opened her laptop and searched for Vanessa's old employment history.
There wasn't much.
A few archived fashion articles mentioned her as an assistant at Whitmore Atelier. One article from 2007 caught her attention.
*PROMISING DESIGNER EVELYN CARTER WITHDRAWS FROM INDUSTRY SHOWCASE FOLLOWING OWNERSHIP DISPUTE.*
Nia clicked.
The article was short.
It reported that an emerging designer had withdrawn her collection after a disagreement involving intellectual property rights. No details were provided.
But the final paragraph mentioned that the Bluebird Collection had subsequently been acquired by an unnamed private investor.
Nia's fingers went cold.
Her mother hadn't simply abandoned her dream.
Someone had taken it.
At 8:03 a.m., an email arrived.
The sender was Margaret Whitmore.
The subject line read:
*CONFIDENTIAL — ORIGINAL TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*
Nia opened the attachment.
It was a scanned legal document dated September 14, 2007.
The document stated that Evelyn Carter had voluntarily transferred ownership of the Bluebird Collection to a private design company.
At the bottom was a signature.
Evelyn Carter.
But beside it appeared another signature.
Vanessa Reed — Authorized Representative.
Nia zoomed in.
The signature looked familiar.
She had seen Vanessa sign birthday cards, permission slips, and household documents hundreds of times.
There was no doubt.
It was her stepmother's handwriting.
But the most disturbing detail was written in the section titled AUTHORITY.
Vanessa had signed as Evelyn's appointed business representative.
Nia read the sentence again.
"Appointed by whom?""
A second attachment contained a letter from Evelyn.
It was dated two weeks before the transfer.
Dear Margaret,
I have discovered that several of my original designs have been shared without my permission. I suspect someone within the studio has accessed my private portfolio.
I have not authorized any transfer of ownership.
Please do not release the Bluebird Collection to anyone without speaking directly to me.
Evelyn.
Nia sat motionless.
Her mother had explicitly warned Margaret.
Yet the collection had still disappeared.
She called the atelier immediately.
Margaret answered.
"Good morning, Nia.""
"I read the documents.""
"I thought you should see them.""
"My mother never appointed Vanessa.""
"I know.""
"Then why did nobody stop the transfer?""
Margaret sighed.
"At the time, we believed the signature was legitimate. Vanessa presented a notarized authorization. She also had copies of several documents that appeared to support her claim.""
"Was my mother ever paid?""
"No.""
"Then how did the company acquire the collection?""
"That is the question we never managed to answer.""
Nia pressed her fingers against her forehead.
"Who bought it?""
"An investment company called Northbridge Creative Holdings.""
Nia wrote down the name.
Margaret continued.
"Northbridge was controlled by a businessman named Richard Reed.""
Nia stopped writing.
"Reed?""
"Yes. Vanessa's former husband.""
The room seemed to shrink around her.
Her stepmother's former husband had purchased the collection.
The woman who signed the transfer agreement had been married to the man who benefited from it.
Nia swallowed.
"Did my mother know?""
"She discovered the connection several months later. By then, the company had dissolved and the original documents were difficult to obtain.""
"Why didn't she sue?""
"She tried. But the legal costs were overwhelming, and she couldn't prove the authorization had been forged.""
Nia looked at her mother's photograph.
"She was pregnant with me around that time, wasn't she?""
Margaret was quiet.
"Yes.""
"She was trying to build a future for us.""
"She was.""
Nia closed her eyes.
For years, she had believed her mother simply hadn't pursued fashion because motherhood had changed her priorities.
Now she understood that Evelyn had been forced to abandon something she had spent years creating.
And Vanessa had been part of it.
"Ms. Whitmore?""
"Yes?""
"I want the original Bluebird Collection.""
Margaret exhaled.
"Then we'll need evidence. Not just suspicion.""
"I understand.""
"And Nia?""
"Yes?""
"Please don't confront Vanessa until we know exactly what we're dealing with.""
Nia looked toward the bedroom door.
"I'll try.""
She ended the call.
At school, Zoe immediately noticed her expression.
"What happened?""
Nia showed her the documents.
Zoe read everything twice.
Then she slammed the papers onto the cafeteria table.
"Your stepmother stole your mother's designs?""
"That's what it looks like.""
"She helped her ex-husband buy them?""
"Apparently.""
Zoe stared at her.
"How are you even sitting here calmly?""
"I'm not calm.""
Nia opened her notebook.
"I'm just trying to think.""
Zoe pulled out her phone.
"Then let's think together.""
They searched Northbridge Creative Holdings.
The company no longer existed under that name, but an archived business listing showed a successor organization.
*Reed Meridian Group.*
Its website listed several subsidiaries, including a luxury fashion licensing division.
Nia clicked through the portfolio.
Her breath caught.
There, among the company's archived projects, was a photograph of a blue evening gown.
The silhouette was unmistakable.
The same flowing skirt.
The same embroidered flowers.
The same delicate butterfly details.
The collection was credited to a different designer.
Nia leaned closer.
"That's my mother's dress.""
Zoe looked at the screen.
"Are you sure?""
"Look at the butterfly placement. Three near the left shoulder, two at the waist, and one on the lower skirt.""
She opened an old photograph from Margaret's portfolio.
The details matched perfectly.
But the website listed the designer as Vanessa Reed.
Nia felt sick.
Her stepmother hadn't merely stolen a dress.
She had built an entire public identity around someone else's work.
Zoe took screenshots.
"We need to save everything.""
Nia copied the website address, downloaded the available photographs, and recorded the page details.
Then she noticed another entry.
A collection titled *Bluebird: A Legacy of Elegance*.
Its launch date was scheduled for the following month.
The promotional material described Vanessa Reed as a visionary designer whose early work had shaped contemporary American couture.
Nia stared at the screen.
"She's planning to relaunch it.""
Zoe nodded.
"And now she knows you're entering the competition.""
Nia slowly closed the laptop.
"That's why she's afraid.""
That evening, Daniel Carter came home earlier than usual.
He found Nia sitting in the kitchen, organizing her mother's documents.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
Nia looked up.
"Hi, Dad.""
Daniel noticed the papers.
"What's all this?""
"Mom's old fashion designs.""
His expression softened.
"Your mother loved those.""
"Did she ever tell you about the Bluebird Collection?""
Daniel stopped removing his jacket.
"Where did you hear that name?""
"From Margaret Whitmore.""
He pulled out a chair.
"Margaret contacted you?""
Nia nodded.
"She showed me some old documents.""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"What documents?""
Nia handed him the transfer agreement.
He read it slowly.
Then his face changed.
"Where did you get this?""
"Margaret sent it.""
Daniel placed the paper on the table.
"Why is Vanessa's name here?""
"That's what I'm trying to find out.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Nia, your mother had some difficult years before she passed. I don't want you reopening old wounds.""
Nia stared at him.
"Did you know Vanessa worked with Mom?""
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"I knew they knew each other.""
"Did you know Vanessa's former husband bought Mom's collection?""
Daniel's silence answered before his words did.
"I knew there had been a disagreement.""
"What kind of disagreement?""
"Your mother believed some of her work had been used without permission.""
"By Vanessa?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Your mother never proved that.""
Nia leaned forward.
"Did you believe her?""
Daniel looked at his hands.
"I believed your mother was hurt.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He didn't answer.
Nia stood.
"She was trying to protect her work, Dad. And everyone acted like she was imagining things.""
"Nia, please.""
"No. She deserved better.""
Daniel looked up.
For a moment, he seemed older than she remembered.
"I know.""
Before Nia could respond, Vanessa entered the kitchen.
She was carrying a shopping bag from an expensive department store.
Her eyes immediately landed on the documents.
"What are those?""
Daniel stood.
"Vanessa, we need to talk.""
She glanced at the transfer agreement.
All the color drained from her face.
Then she recovered.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Margaret Whitmore," Nia replied.
Vanessa snatched the document.
"You had no right to contact her.""
Nia stared.
"Why?""
"Because this is a private family matter.""
"It happened before you were part of our family.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Vanessa, is your signature on this?""
She looked at him.
"Daniel, don't be ridiculous.""
"Answer me.""
"It was years ago.""
"Did you sign it?""
Vanessa dropped the paper onto the table.
"I was helping Evelyn. She was confused about the paperwork.""
Nia's voice shook.
"Mom specifically wrote that she hadn't authorized any transfer.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Your mother was under enormous pressure.""
"That doesn't give you permission to sign her name.""
"I didn't sign her name!""
"Then why is your signature here?""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He didn't speak.
For the first time, Nia saw something other than anger in her stepmother's face.
Fear.
Real fear.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the papers.
"These documents are meaningless. They're old, incomplete, and probably not even legally valid.""
Nia held up her phone.
"I have copies.""
Vanessa froze.
Then she leaned toward Nia and whispered:
"You have absolutely no idea what your mother did to me.""
Nia didn't move.
"What did she do?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
But before she could answer, Brianna appeared in the doorway.
"Mom?""
Vanessa stepped back.
"Go upstairs.""
Brianna looked between them.
"What's happening?""
"Nothing.""
Nia looked at her stepsister.
"Ask your mother about the Bluebird Collection.""
Brianna frowned.
"What?""
Vanessa snapped.
"Enough!""
She turned to Daniel.
"We're discussing this privately.""
Then she grabbed Brianna's arm and pulled her out of the kitchen.
Daniel remained standing beside the table.
Nia looked at him.
"Do you know what happened?""
He stared at the papers.
"I think it's time I told you something.""
May you like
And when he finally spoke, the first sentence shattered everything Nia thought she knew about her mother's final years.
"Your mother didn't just lose her designs, sweetheart. She lost them because she was trying to protect you.""
