Chapter 9: The Graveyard Confession
The next morning, I stood in front of my father's grave.
Rain fell steadily across the cemetery.
The grass was dark and wet, and the trees moved gently in the wind.
Evelyn stood beside me.
Daniel waited near the car with two security officers.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then Evelyn pointed toward the stone base of the monument.
"Your father had a small compartment installed beneath the left corner.""
I knelt.
There was a narrow metal seam almost invisible beneath the engraved flowers.
I touched it.
Nothing happened.
Evelyn handed me the silver butterfly compartment.
"Try this.""
I inserted the piece into a small opening.
A soft click sounded.
The stone panel shifted.
Inside was a waterproof metal case.
My hands trembled as I lifted it out.
Daniel approached.
"Careful.""
I opened the case.
Inside were three folders, a flash drive, and a sealed envelope.
The first folder contained the original ownership agreements for Asteria Creative Group.
The second contained bank records.
The third contained correspondence between my father, Evelyn, Margaret Hale, and Richard Lawson.
I opened the envelope.
My father's handwriting.
Again.
Camille,
If you have found this, then the people I feared have finally come for what I tried to protect.
I need you to know that I did not create Asteria Creative Group merely to protect a business.
I created it because I wanted you to have something no one could take from you.
But there is another truth.
The first money used to build the company came from Evelyn. She believed in your vision before anyone else did.
She invested her savings, her reputation, and years of work.
I promised her that if the company succeeded, she would receive a permanent share.
The original agreement is in this case.
If Vanessa ever claims that Evelyn stole from us, remember that the opposite may be true.
I am sorry I could not tell you everything myself.
Love, Dad.
I lowered the letter.
Evelyn was crying.
"He never forgot," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"How much did you invest?""
She shook her head.
"That doesn't matter.""
"It matters to me.""
She hesitated.
"Three million dollars.""
I stared at her.
"Three million?""
"Your father was struggling to finance the first version of the event. I believed in him. I believed in you.""
I looked down at the original ownership agreement.
Her name appeared beside a percentage.
Twenty-five percent.
My father's name appeared beside fifty-one percent.
The remaining twenty-four percent belonged to a charitable trust established for the children's hospital program.
Vanessa owned nothing.
Not one share.
I felt a strange mixture of relief and anger.
For years, Vanessa had treated the company as if it were hers.
She had used its name, its resources, and its reputation.
But she had never owned it.
Daniel examined the documents.
"This is excellent evidence. We can use it to challenge the false ownership claim immediately.""
He opened the flash drive.
"There's something else.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He connected it to his laptop.
A video file appeared.
The title was simple.
*LAST STATEMENT — ROBERT BENNETT.*
My father.
I felt my throat tighten.
"Play it.""
Daniel clicked.
My father's face appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in his study.
His hair looked thinner than I remembered, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.
But his voice was unmistakable.
"My name is Robert Bennett. I am recording this because I believe someone within my company has been using forged documents to transfer funds and manipulate ownership records.""
He looked directly into the camera.
"If anything happens to me, I want the following people investigated.""
A list appeared.
Margaret Hale.
Richard Lawson.
Vanessa Bellamy.
I held my breath.
Then my father continued.
"However, I want to make one thing clear. I do not believe my wife is the only person responsible.""
Evelyn looked at the screen.
My father's expression changed.
"Someone else has been providing information from inside my home.""
He paused.
"And I believe that person is my daughter.""
My heart stopped.
The video continued.
"Not because Camille has done anything wrong. But because someone has been using her identity and access to make it appear that she approved the transfers.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Daniel stopped the video.
I stared at him.
"Play it.""
He did.
My father leaned closer to the camera.
"Camille, if you ever see this, please understand that I know you did not sign those documents.""
Tears rolled down my face.
"I know someone is using your name. I know someone has been trying to make you look responsible.""
He took a shaky breath.
"I should have protected you sooner.""
I covered my mouth.
My father looked down at something on the desk.
Then he continued.
"There is one person who knows exactly how this happened.""
He lifted his eyes.
"His name is Thomas Bellamy.""
I froze.
Thomas Bellamy.
Vanessa's younger brother.
The man who had supposedly died in a boating accident fifteen years earlier.
I turned toward Evelyn.
"Who is Thomas?""
She looked devastated.
"Vanessa's brother.""
"He's dead?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not according to your father.""
I looked back at the screen.
My father was still speaking.
"Thomas has been using a false identity to manage several offshore accounts. He helped Margaret establish the original transfer system. He also has access to the security credentials used to approve the forged documents.""
Daniel stopped the recording.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then I whispered:
"He's alive.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Your father believed he was.""
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel examined the file information.
"There's a timestamp.""
He enlarged the screen.
The recording had been created two days before my father's death.
I stared at the date.
Two days.
My father had known.
He had known someone was using my name.
He had known Vanessa's brother was involved.
And he had left evidence for me.
My phone rang.
Elena.
I answered.
"Camille?""
"Yes.""
"Victor just resigned.""
I closed my eyes.
"When?""
"Ten minutes ago. He sent an email claiming he was leaving for personal reasons.""
"Where is he?""
"Nobody knows. He hasn't returned to his apartment.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Can you trace the document access records?""
He nodded.
I continued speaking.
"Elena, lock every executive account. Nobody gets access without my direct authorization.""
"Already done.""
"Good.""
Then she said something else.
"Camille, Richard is gone too.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
"His office is empty. His personal belongings are missing. Security says he left the building at six this morning.""
I stared at the cemetery gates.
The black SUV from the previous day was parked outside.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching us.
"Elena, listen carefully. Call Daniel's office. Tell them Richard and Victor have disappeared.""
"Okay.""
"And don't go anywhere alone.""
I ended the call.
Daniel followed my gaze.
"Do you recognize that vehicle?""
"Yes.""
Evelyn looked toward the gates.
Her face went pale.
"Thomas.""
I turned.
"What?""
She shook her head.
"That car belongs to a company he used years ago.""
The driver's door opened.
A tall man stepped out.
He wore a dark overcoat and carried a black umbrella.
His face was older than the photograph my father had shown me.
But I recognized the eyes.
Evelyn whispered:
"Thomas Bellamy.""
The man walked toward us.
"Camille.""
I stood.
"Who are you?""
He gave a small smile.
"Your uncle.""
I stared at him.
"You were supposed to be dead.""
He shrugged.
"People believe what they're told.""
Daniel moved between us.
"Mr. Bellamy, I advise you to leave.""
Thomas ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
"Your father made a terrible mistake trusting Evelyn.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Don't you dare.""
Thomas smiled.
"Still playing the loyal friend?""
He looked at me again.
"Come with me. I'll tell you what really happened to your father.""
I shook my head.
"Why should I believe you?""
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed my father standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was a woman.
I recognized her.
Vanessa.
But there was something strange.
My father was holding a newborn baby.
The photograph was dated three years before I was born.
Thomas looked at my expression.
"There's something your family never told you, Camille.""
He lowered his voice.
"You're not Robert Bennett's biological daughter.""
The world seemed to tilt.
Evelyn grabbed my arm.
"Thomas, stop.""
But he continued.
"And the woman who gave birth to you was the same woman Vanessa spent fifteen years trying to destroy.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
May you like
Thomas smiled.
"Margaret Hale.""
