Chapter 3: My Father's Last Secret

I arrived at Daniel Reed's office twenty minutes later.

He was waiting beside a conference table covered in documents.

"Sit down, Camille.""

I remained standing.

"Show me the document.""

Daniel slid a folder across the table.

Inside was a photocopy of a contract dated six months before my father's death.

The heading read:

*INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND EVENT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT.*

I recognized my father's signature immediately.

Below it was Vanessa's.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

By the third, my hands had begun to tremble.

"What is this?""

Daniel folded his hands.

"Your father established a separate company to protect the intellectual property associated with the Midnight Masquerade.""

I looked up.

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he believed Bellamy Holdings was becoming financially unstable.""

I continued reading.

The document stated that the gala's name, concept, visual identity, production designs, and associated creative assets belonged to a private company called Asteria Creative Group.

My company.

The company I had established three years ago.

I looked at Daniel.

"How did my father know?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because he helped fund the initial development.""

I slowly sat down.

For a moment, the office seemed very quiet.

My father had died before the gala's first major production.

I had always believed I had built everything alone.

But now I was staring at evidence that he had quietly protected my dream before I even understood how important it would become.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

Daniel opened another folder.

"There's a letter.""

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father's.

My darling Camille,

If you're reading this, I probably failed to explain why I believed in your dream before I ran out of time.

I know Vanessa doesn't understand what you want to build. She sees fashion as a business, a means of making money and collecting attention. But you have always seen it differently.

You see the people behind the work.

You see the children who need help, the artists who deserve a chance, and the stories that can bring strangers together.

I have placed the foundation of your project in a separate company. One day, if you decide to make it real, it will belong to you.

Never let anyone convince you that being quiet means being weak.

Love, Dad.

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Daniel waited.

Finally, I wiped my eyes.

"Why does Vanessa have this contract?""

"She was a signatory because your father initially wanted Bellamy Holdings to provide administrative support.""

"Did she know about the company?""

"Yes. But according to the agreement, she had no ownership rights.""

I looked at the final page.

There was another clause.

If Bellamy Holdings attempted to claim ownership of the event or its intellectual property, its access to the agreement's associated commercial benefits would automatically terminate.

I looked up.

"Does that mean what I think it means?""

Daniel nodded.

"Vanessa's trademark application may have triggered the clause.""

I leaned back.

For the first time in years, I felt my father's presence in a way I couldn't explain.

He had anticipated this.

He had known that one day, someone might try to take what I had built.

And he had made sure they couldn't.

"Can you stop the application?""

"Immediately. We can also submit the original agreement and supporting corporate records.""

"Do it.""

Daniel nodded.

"But I recommend we go further. If Vanessa used forged documents to obtain sponsorship or misrepresent ownership, we should preserve every communication.""

I looked at the folder.

"Agreed.""

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Vanessa.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Then I answered.

"Hello?""

"Camille, where are you?""

"Busy.""

"Your sister is having a problem.""

I glanced at Daniel.

"What kind of problem?""

"Madame Laurent refuses to make the alterations.""

I closed my eyes.

"That doesn't surprise me.""

"Well, you need to fix it.""

"Why?""

"Because Brielle has an important fitting tomorrow. She cannot attend the gala looking like she's wearing someone else's clothes.""

I almost laughed.

"That's exactly what she's doing.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Don't be clever.""

"Then don't ask me to fix a problem you created.""

There was a pause.

Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.

"Your father would be ashamed of you.""

I looked down at his letter.

"No, Vanessa. He wouldn't.""

"You have no idea how much this family has sacrificed for you.""

"Tell me something. Did you know about the Asteria Creative Group?""

Silence.

It lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

"Where did you hear that name?"" she asked.

I sat straighter.

"So you do know.""

"Camille, that is a private business matter.""

"Actually, it's my business.""

She laughed nervously.

"Don't be absurd.""

"I have the original agreement.""

Her breathing changed.

"Where?""

"Why does it matter?""

"Because your father made promises to this family.""

I glanced at Daniel.

He was already taking notes.

"What promises?""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"He told me Bellamy Holdings would have access to the gala's commercial opportunities. He said the company would benefit from the event.""

"Access isn't ownership.""

"You don't understand business.""

"Then explain it to me.""

She snapped.

"Your father would never have wanted you to destroy the family he left behind.""

I looked at the letter again.

"He wanted me to build something of my own.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Then the call ended.

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

"That was interesting.""

"She knows about the contract.""

"Clearly.""

I placed the phone on the table.

"Can we establish whether Bellamy Holdings has been using my company's intellectual property?""

"Yes. I'll have the forensic accountant examine the records.""

I nodded.

Then I remembered the sponsorship presentation.

"Daniel, I want to know why their application claims exclusive merchandise rights.""

He opened his laptop.

"We'll investigate.""

By late afternoon, I was back at the foundation headquarters.

Elena was waiting outside my office.

"You need to see this.""

She handed me her tablet.

A video was playing.

Brielle stood in the Bellamy estate's living room, surrounded by two photographers and a woman holding a clipboard.

She was wearing the butterfly gown.

Vanessa stood beside her, smiling.

The woman with the clipboard asked, "And you're comfortable introducing yourself as the official fairy queen?""

Brielle nodded.

"Absolutely. Asteria personally chose me.""

The photographer adjusted his camera.

"Can you explain how you were selected?""

Brielle laughed.

"Well, my family has always supported the arts. When the organizers reached out, I was honored to accept.""

I stared at the screen.

Then the woman asked a question that made me sit forward.

"Do you have any message for the mysterious creative director?""

Brielle smiled directly at the camera.

"Yes. Thank you for trusting me with your vision. I promise I'll make you proud.""

The video ended.

I placed the tablet on my desk.

"Who recorded this?""

"An entertainment journalist. It was uploaded about an hour ago.""

"Has the gala been mentioned?""

"Several times. It's already spreading.""

I looked at the screen again.

Brielle had not simply lied to her friends.

She had given an official-looking interview claiming to represent the event.

Elena crossed her arms.

"Legal wants to issue a public statement.""

"Not yet.""

"Camille, she's using your identity.""

"I know.""

"Then why wait?""

I looked toward the enormous production board on the wall.

The final gala was scheduled for Halloween night.

There were twelve days remaining.

Twelve days until the most influential people in the country would gather beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Metropolitan Ballroom.

Twelve days until the mysterious creative director would finally appear.

And twelve days until my family discovered who they had been humiliating.

"Because," I said, "I want everything to be perfect.""

Elena studied me.

"What are you planning?""

I opened the gala's final production schedule.

"Move the fairy queen reveal to the opening sequence.""

"That's already the plan.""

"Not anymore. I want the identity reveal immediately after the opening performance.""

Elena looked surprised.

"You mean you'll announce yourself?""

"Yes.""

She smiled.

"Are you sure?""

I thought about Brielle standing beneath my father's portrait.

I thought about Vanessa telling me I was living in her house.

I thought about the contract my father had signed to protect the dream I had spent three years building.

"Very sure.""

Elena began typing.

Then her phone rang.

She answered, listened, and slowly turned pale.

"What happened?"" I asked.

She covered the microphone.

"The Harrington Foundation just called.""

"Why?""

"They're threatening to withdraw their $5 million sponsorship unless Brielle remains the featured fairy queen.""

I stared at her.

For a moment, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Then Elena added quietly:

"They say they've already received confirmation from the event's creative director.""

My phone buzzed.

An email had arrived.

The sender was Celeste Harrington.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: CONFIRMATION OF BRIelle BELLAMY'S ROLE.*

I opened it.

The message contained a single sentence.

Dear Asteria, we understand that family matters can be complicated, but surely you won't allow a personal disagreement to damage such an important charitable partnership.

Below it was an attachment.

A signed letter.

This time, the signature was mine.

And the date was tomorrow.

I stared at the document.

Someone wasn't merely impersonating me anymore.

Someone had obtained information that only my inner production team should have known.

I slowly looked at Elena.

"Who has access to my private authorization files?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

"Six people, Camille.""

"Who are they?""

Elena swallowed.

"One of them is your stepmother's personal attorney.""

My blood ran cold.

Because that meant Vanessa hadn't stumbled into my world by accident.

May you like

She had been planning to take control of it.

And someone inside my organization had been helping her.
