Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Mission

Everything became silent.

Not peaceful.

The kind of silence before an explosion.

General Marcus Vale stood in the doorway.

Older than the photographs.

But still carrying the same confidence.

The same expression I remembered from childhood dinners.

The man who used to bring me birthday presents.

The man who used to call my father his closest friend.

The man everyone called a hero.

I stared at him.

“You.””

Vale smiled sadly.

“Hello, Madison.””

Ethan stepped in front of me.

“No.””

Vale looked at him.

“You always were protective.””

“You don’t get to talk to her.””

Vale laughed softly.

“You still think you’re in control.””

Ghost growled.

Vale’s eyes moved to the dog.

“Even after all these years.””

Ethan’s hand tightened.

“Stay away from him.””

Vale looked amused.

“Do you know what’s funny?””

Nobody answered.

“Everyone thinks Ghost is loyal because he loves you.””

He looked at me.

“They’re wrong.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Vale smiled.

“He’s loyal because Ethan programmed him.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

“Tell her.””

Vale stepped closer.

“Tell her what you did.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What is he talking about?””

Ethan said nothing.

That scared me.

“Ethan.””

His eyes closed briefly.

“I trained Ghost to protect you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I trained him to watch you.””

The words felt like a knife.

“What?””

Ethan looked broken.

“Your father left something inside you.””

I stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“Not inside your body.””

He stepped closer.

“Inside your memories.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Madison, your father knew someone would come after him.””

Vale smiled.

“And he was right.””

Ethan continued.

“He created a backup system.””

“A system?””

“A human key.””

My blood ran cold.

“Me.””

He nodded.

I felt sick.

“My father used me?””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice became firm.

“He protected you.””

Vale laughed.

“Such a romantic way to say it.””

Ethan looked at him with hatred.

“You manipulated him.””

“Yes.””

Vale didn’t deny it.

“Your father was brilliant.””

He looked around.

“But he was weak.””

“Because he cared about people.””

“No.””

Vale smiled.

“Because he cared about his daughter.””

I felt anger rising.

“What did you do to him?””

Vale looked at me.

“I gave him a choice.””

“What choice?””

“Help me finish Black Meridian.””

“And?””

“Or lose everything.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You killed him.””

Vale didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

My father.

Ethan.

Everything I believed.

Gone.

“You killed him because he refused.””

Vale’s face remained calm.

“Yes.””

Claire whispered:

“Monster.””

Vale ignored her.

“Your father hid the final data before he died.””

“What data?””

“The shutdown code.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And he gave it to me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then looked at Ghost.

The dog.

“No.””

I understood.

“Ghost.””

Ethan nodded.

“Your father knew animals were harder to track than people.””

Vale smiled.

“And that is why Ghost became the most important dog in military history.””

I stepped back.

“You’re insane.””

“Maybe.””

Vale looked at me.

“But I’m also right.””

He pointed at Ethan.

“Ask him why he never came home.””

I looked at Ethan.

The pain in his eyes answered before he spoke.

“Because I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because the shutdown code is connected to you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“If Vale captures you…”

Ethan swallowed.

“He gets everything.””

The room went silent.

Then a gunshot echoed.

Everyone moved.

Vale’s men entered from the hallway.

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Run.””

We moved.

Not like civilians.

Like soldiers.

Ghost stayed beside us.

Claire covered the exit.

Hayes, injured but alive, fired back.

We reached the outer corridor.

Then Ethan stopped.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked at Ghost.

Then at me.

“Madison.””

His voice was different.

The same voice from seven years ago.

The voice before a dangerous mission.

“Whatever happens next…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

He smiled sadly.

“You always hated goodbye.””

“Because they’re stupid.””

“I know.””

He touched Ghost’s head.

“He remembers.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan looked toward the mountains.

“The code isn’t hidden in Ghost.””

My heart stopped.

“Then where?””

He looked at me.

“Your father never trusted technology.””

A pause.

“He hid it in the one place Vale would never think to look.””

I whispered:

“Where?””

Ethan’s eyes met mine.

“Your memories.””

Before I could answer, the entire mountain shook.

An explosion.

The floor cracked beneath us.

Ethan pushed me away from falling debris.

When I looked back…

he was gone.

Only Ghost remained.

Standing beside a broken wall.

And on the ground was Ethan’s final message.

Written in his own handwriting.
