Chapter 5: The Woman in Ethan’s Shadow

The woman stepped into my clinic like she belonged there.

Like she had walked through danger so many times that fear had stopped being something she felt.

Ghost reacted first.

He didn’t bark.

He didn’t growl.

He simply stared.

That scared me more.

Because Ghost only became silent when something mattered.

Commander Hayes raised his weapon.

The woman didn’t even flinch.

“Put it down, Luke.””

Hayes froze.

Not because she ordered him to.

Because she knew his name.

“You know her?”” I asked.

Neither of them answered.

The woman looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I hated those words.

Everyone had been saying sorry for seven years.

Sorry Ethan was gone.

Sorry there were no answers.

Sorry there was nothing anyone could do.

I didn’t want another apology.

I wanted the truth.

“Who are you?””

She slowly removed her wet coat.

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

The name meant nothing.

But Hayes looked like he had just seen a ghost.

“You’re dead.””

Claire gave him a tired smile.

“That seems to happen a lot around Ethan.””

My chest tightened.

“You worked with him?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before you knew him.””

That answer made my stomach twist.

Before me.

Before the missions.

Before the nights Ethan and I spent pretending we were only friends.

I stepped closer.

“You were with him when he disappeared.””

Claire didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

She looked at Ghost.

Then at the photograph still sitting on my desk.

“He never stopped looking for a way back to you.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked away.

Because hearing those words hurt more than I expected.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Claire’s expression softened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t get to walk in here after seven years and tell me he cared.””

“I’m not telling you he cared.””

She paused.

“I’m telling you he survived because he cared.””

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted to throw her out.

But something in her voice stopped me.

It wasn’t guilt.

It was exhaustion.

The kind Ethan used to carry after missions.

The kind that came from surviving something nobody else understood.

Hayes lowered his weapon.

“Claire, where is he?””

She looked at him.

“You still don’t know?””

“No.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“Then Ethan was right.””

“About what?””

“That you were never told the whole story.””

Hayes stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Claire walked toward the computer.

She looked at Ethan’s paused video.

“He discovered a program called Black Meridian.””

I frowned.

“Military?””

“Officially?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what was it?””

“A private intelligence operation hidden inside government contracts.””

My hands tightened.

“You’re saying someone created a secret military unit?””

“No.””

Claire looked at me.

“I’m saying someone created a secret military unit and then erased everyone involved when they became inconvenient.””

The words felt impossible.

But after everything I had seen…

They didn’t.

“Ethan found evidence,” she continued.

“He discovered soldiers were being sent into missions that didn’t officially exist.””

Hayes looked angry.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

Claire laughed quietly.

“Luke, you spent ten years following orders. You know exactly how serious it is.””

His face hardened.

“What happened to Ethan?””

“He tried to expose them.””

“And?””

“He failed.””

I stared at her.

“Then how is he alive?””

Claire looked at Ghost.

“Because of him.””

The dog lifted his head.

“Ghost carried the evidence out.””

I looked at the Malinois.

“A dog?””

“Not just a dog.””

Claire touched the old harness.

“Ethan knew if he disappeared, Ghost would be the only witness nobody would suspect.””

I swallowed.

“He trained him to come back to me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire hesitated.

“Because Ethan knew he might not survive.””

The room blurred for a second.

I hated that I understood.

Ethan always planned for disasters.

Always prepared for the worst.

Even when I told him he was too serious.

Even when I told him he acted like tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed.

I remembered his answer.

“Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, Madison. That’s why today matters.””

I looked at Claire.

“Where is he?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Claire.””

“He’s close.””

“How close?””

“Closer than you think.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small device.

A tracking unit.

My eyes widened.

“Is that…”

“Ghost’s original tracker.””

Hayes stared.

“The military removed those.””

“They thought they did.””

Claire handed it to me.

The screen displayed a location.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew that place.

Everyone in my unit knew it.

A mountain range.

The same mountains where Ethan disappeared.

The same place where they told us he died.

“No.””

Claire watched my reaction.

“You know it.””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s where the mission happened.””

“Yes.””

“Why would he go back there?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Because that’s where the truth was buried.””

A sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Everyone froze.

Not because of the sound.

Because it was coming from inside Ghost’s harness.

I looked down.

There was a hidden compartment I hadn’t noticed before.

Inside was an old military phone.

It turned on by itself.

One message appeared.

No number.

No name.

Only four words.

*HE KNOWS YOU’RE COMING.*

Then another message appeared.

*DON’T TRUST CLAIRE.*

I looked up.

Claire’s face had gone pale.

Hayes noticed.

“Who sent that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ghost suddenly stood.

His ears pointed toward the front entrance.

The same posture.

The same alertness.

Someone was outside.

Claire whispered:

“He found us.””

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward the door.

“The man who made Ethan disappear.””

The handle slowly turned.

And a voice came from the other side.

“Madison.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the same voice from the hallway.

Victor Kane.

“Open the door.””

Claire stepped back.

“Do not.””

Kane spoke again.

“You deserve the truth.””

Ghost moved forward.

Ready.

May you like

And then Kane said the one thing that made my blood run cold.

“Especially because Ethan never told you why he really left.””
