Chapter 7: The Soldier Beneath the Monster

We left before sunrise.

No arguments.

No hesitation.

For the first time in seven years, my instincts felt exactly like they did on the battlefield.

Something was wrong.

And every second mattered.

The mountain coordinates were six hours away.

Six hours between me and the truth.

Six hours between me and Ethan.

If he was alive.

I sat in the passenger seat while Ghost lay behind me.

Claire drove.

Hayes followed in another vehicle.

Nobody spoke for the first hour.

Finally, I broke the silence.

“You knew my father.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“Enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

“Your father was brilliant.””

I looked out the window.

“That’s what everyone said.””

“He was.””

A pause.

“But brilliant people can build dangerous things.””

I hated that she was making sense.

“What was Black Meridian designed for?””

Claire looked at the road.

“Predicting threats.””

“Like intelligence?””

“At first.””

“And later?””

Her silence answered.

“Later it became control.””

I closed my eyes.

Ethan had always hated people who treated soldiers like numbers.

I remembered him arguing with commanders.

“They’re not assets.””

“They’re people.””

He would say it every time.

And every time, someone would tell him he was too emotional.

Maybe that was why they feared him.

Because he remembered soldiers were human.

Hours later, we reached the mountains.

The place looked exactly like my nightmares.

Rock.

Snow.

Silence.

The same place where Ethan was supposed to have died.

Ghost jumped out before the vehicle stopped.

He ran forward.

Not randomly.

Purposefully.

“He remembers,” I whispered.

Claire nodded.

“He remembers everything.””

We followed.

The trail led us to an abandoned military station hidden between cliffs.

Impossible to see from above.

The door was open.

Too open.

Hayes raised his weapon.

“Careful.””

Inside were old computers.

Maps.

Files.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Soldiers.

Missions.

Names.

Some crossed out.

Some marked deceased.

I walked closer.

My stomach turned.

Because I saw Ethan’s name.

But not as deceased.

As active.

Status:

RECOVERED ASSET.

I touched the screen.

“Recovered asset?””

Claire looked away.

“They never considered him a person after he disappeared.””

A noise came from the hallway.

Ghost reacted instantly.

He ran.

“Ghost!””

We followed.

The dog stopped at a locked door.

He scratched once.

Then waited.

I knew what that meant.

I found the keypad.

But it needed a code.

Claire whispered:

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Try something only he would use.””

My fingers moved.

I typed.

Rook.

Denied.

I thought.

Then I remembered.

Some words belonged to memories.

Not commands.

I typed:

RookEthan.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

A bed.

Medical supplies.

And a person sitting against the wall.

For a second, nobody moved.

Because my mind refused to believe what my eyes were seeing.

The man slowly lifted his head.

Older.

Scarred.

Tired.

But alive.

“Madison.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t move.

Ethan Cross stood up.

And Ghost ran to him.

The dog collapsed against his chest.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Holding him.

Then he looked at me.

Seven years of pain.

Seven years of unanswered questions.

All standing in front of me.

I whispered his name.

“Ethan…”

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t get to say sorry.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

I stepped closer.

“You let me bury you.””

“I was trying to save you.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because the answer hurt him too.

“Because they were watching you.””

“Who?””

He looked at Claire.

Then Hayes.

Then back at me.

“Everyone.””

I stared.

“What?””

Ethan reached for a folder beside him.

Inside was a single photograph.

A family photograph.

My father.

General Vale.

Ethan.

And me.

My blood went cold.

Because I had never seen this picture.

Ethan pointed at my father.

“Your father didn’t just build Black Meridian.””

He pointed at me.

“He built it around you.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Before Ethan could answer, the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Then another.

Hayes fell.

Claire screamed.

Ghost moved.

And Ethan grabbed my hand.

The same way he did seven years ago.

“Madison.””

His voice was urgent.

“We have to go.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.””

His eyes met mine.

“The truth is…”

A shadow appeared in the doorway.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Ethan never told you the worst part.””

General Marcus Vale stepped into the room.

May you like

Smiling.

“He was the reason your father died.””
