Chapter 9: The Person Nobody Suspected
Nobody moved.
Caroline stood at the end of the table, surrounded by silence.
For years, she had been the person everyone trusted.
She had handled contracts.
Protected company secrets.
Advised the Madden family through difficult decisions.
She wasn’t the obvious villain.
That was why nobody saw her coming.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Caroline looked down.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Walter’s expression hardened.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I understand perfectly.””
She shook her head.
“You think you’re the only one who sacrificed things?””
The room stayed quiet.
Caroline opened the folder.
“Thirty years ago, when Samuel disappeared, I was the one who found the records.””
Walter froze.
“You?””
“Yes.””
Samuel looked confused.
“Why?””
Caroline looked at him.
“Because my father worked for you.””
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
“He was an accountant for the original company.””
Samuel’s eyes widened.
“Thomas?””
She nodded.
“He knew what happened.””
Walter looked away.
“And he kept silent.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Caroline laughed bitterly.
“Because he was afraid.””
The words hung there.
Fear.
The same thing that had controlled Walter decades earlier.
The same thing that had controlled everyone connected to him.
Caroline looked at Daniel.
“I spent my entire life watching powerful people destroy ordinary people and call it business.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“So you stole from the company?””
“I corrected the balance.””
Walter frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Caroline opened another document.
“I discovered that after Samuel disappeared, money was moved into accounts connected to your family.””
Walter looked shocked.
“Impossible.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You didn’t know everything.””
The room went silent again.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Are you saying someone else manipulated my father?””
Caroline nodded.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked confused.
“Who?””
Caroline hesitated.
Then she said:
“Your grandfather.””
Walter froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The words hit like a storm.
Walter sat down.
“No.””
Caroline continued.
“He was the one who convinced you to remove Samuel. He told you investors would abandon you. He told you the company would fail.””
Walter whispered:
“He told me I was protecting the future.””
“And you believed him.””
The room became still.
Samuel looked at Walter.
For the first time, his anger softened.
Because he realized something.
Walter had betrayed him.
But Walter had also been manipulated.
Caroline turned toward me.
“And then Emily appeared.””
I felt everyone’s eyes on me.
“Why are you bringing me into this?””
“Because you changed everything.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Caroline smiled sadly.
“You were the first person in decades who treated Walter like a human being.””
Walter looked down.
Caroline continued.
“That’s why I helped Daniel.””
Everyone reacted.
Daniel stared.
“You helped me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought removing Walter would finally expose the truth.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked him.
“But you also proved something.””
“What?””
Caroline looked around the room.
“That this family was still repeating the same mistakes.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Walter stood.
Slowly.
“I spent thirty years trying to protect my legacy.””
He looked at Samuel.
“I forgot the only thing that mattered.””
Samuel watched him.
“What?””
Walter looked toward me.
“Who deserved to inherit it.””
I felt uncomfortable.
“Walter…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then he turned to the board.
“I am making a new decision.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What decision?””
Walter took a deep breath.
“The company will not be inherited by blood.””
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Victoria whispered.
Walter continued.
“For decades, I believed family meant keeping everything within the family.””
He looked at Daniel.
“I was wrong.””
Then he looked at me.
“From today forward, Madden Global will be governed by a foundation.””
My heart stopped.
“What foundation?””
Walter smiled slightly.
“One built around the principle I forgot.””
He looked around the room.
“People first.””
Daniel stared.
“And Emily?””
Walter looked at me.
“She will lead the foundation.””
I couldn’t speak.
But before anyone could react, Samuel picked up another document.
“There’s one more thing.””
Everyone turned.
Samuel looked serious.
“Something Walter doesn’t know.””
Walter frowned.
“What?””
Samuel placed the document on the table.
“This is why I came back.””
Walter looked at the page.
Then his expression changed.
Because at the bottom of the document was a signature.
Not Samuel’s.
Not Walter’s.
Someone else’s.
A name that made everyone in the room go silent.
May you like
Because the person who had controlled the Madden family’s fate for thirty years…
Was someone they all thought was gone forever.
