Chapter 4: The Heir Who Wanted Me Gone
The first thing I noticed was that Walter Madden looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Afraid.
And that scared me more than anything.
I had seen powerful people lose their temper before. I had watched wealthy customers yell at servers over tiny mistakes. I had watched executives threaten employees because they knew money gave them influence.
But Walter was different.
He wasn’t afraid of losing money.
He was afraid of losing control of something much more important.
His family.
“Why does your son know my name?”” I asked.
Walter didn’t answer immediately.
He walked back to his desk and placed both hands against the wooden surface.
“Because Daniel has been watching everything.””
“Watching me?””
“Yes.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Why?””
Walter looked at me.
“Because he believes you are a threat.””
I almost laughed.
A threat?
I was a waitress.
I didn’t own a company. I didn’t have political connections. I didn’t even have enough savings to replace my car if it broke down.
“How could I possibly be a threat to him?””
Walter sighed.
“Because my son thinks everything has a price.””
He opened a drawer and pulled out another file.
Inside were newspaper articles, business documents, and photographs.
“Daniel grew up believing he was supposed to inherit everything,” Walter said.
“He wasn’t?””
“He was supposed to inherit responsibility.””
Walter’s voice became heavier.
“But he only saw the reward.””
He placed a photograph on the desk.
A younger Daniel stood beside him at a business event, smiling for cameras.
“He was brilliant,” Walter said.
“Smartest person I ever knew.””
“What happened?””
Walter looked away.
“Success happened.””
The room was quiet.
“After my wife died, I became obsessed with keeping the company alive. I spent years building Madden Global Holdings. I thought I was protecting my family’s future.””
He paused.
“I didn’t realize I was losing my family in the process.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Does Daniel hate you?””
Walter’s expression tightened.
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“He doesn’t hate me.””
He looked down.
“He hates the fact that I can still say no.””
Before I could respond, the office door opened.
A security guard stepped inside.
“Mr. Madden, there’s someone here to see you.””
Walter’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
The guard hesitated.
“Your son.””
The air changed.
Walter looked at me.
“Emily, you should go.””
I stood.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
His honesty surprised me.
Then he added:
“But I need you to hear this.””
I stopped.
“Whatever Daniel says, remember one thing.””
“What?””
“You were kind before you knew my name.””
The door opened again.
And Daniel Madden walked in.
The first thing I noticed was how similar he looked to Walter.
Same sharp eyes.
Same confident posture.
Same controlled expression.
But there was one difference.
Walter carried his power quietly.
Daniel carried his like a weapon.
He looked at me.
Then at his father.
“So this is her.””
I didn’t like the way he said it.
Like I was an object.
Not a person.
Walter’s voice was cold.
“Daniel.””
His son ignored him.
“You really changed the inheritance documents?””
I froze.
Walter didn’t answer.
Daniel smiled.
“That’s unbelievable.””
“Leave, Daniel.””
“No.””
He walked closer.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Walter looked at him.
“That’s my decision.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Your decision?””
He glanced around the office.
“You built this empire because you made smart decisions. Now you’re willing to throw everything away because someone gave you a sandwich?””
My face heated.
“I didn’t ask for anything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what makes you dangerous.””
I frowned.
“Excuse me?””
“You don’t understand how this works.””
His tone was calm.
Almost polite.
Which somehow made it worse.
“People don’t enter my father’s world without wanting something.””
“I didn’t enter your father’s world,” I said.
“He sat outside my workplace in the rain.””
Daniel stared.
“And you just happened to find him?””
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“Convenient.””
Walter stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“No. You need to hear this.””
His voice sharpened.
“This woman doesn’t know you. She doesn’t know our family. She doesn’t know what you built.””
Walter’s expression hardened.
“And yet she treated me better than my own son.””
The words hit.
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Pain.
Then anger replaced it.
“You’re really doing this.””
Walter didn’t respond.
Daniel pulled a document from his briefcase.
“Then maybe you should know what happens next.””
Walter looked at the paper.
“What is that?””
“A legal challenge.””
The room went silent.
Daniel continued.
“If you change the will, I will contest it.””
Walter stared at him.
“You would drag your own father through court?””
“If necessary.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Because I refuse to let a stranger steal what belongs to me.””
I shook my head.
“Nothing belongs to you until someone gives it to you.””
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time, his expression showed real anger.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Maybe.””
I held his gaze.
“But I know what I saw.””
“What?””
“I saw an old man freezing outside your family’s restaurant.””
Daniel went quiet.
“And nobody helped him.””
His eyes darkened.
“Except you.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“And that’s the part you can’t understand.””
The silence was unbearable.
Then Daniel stepped closer.
“You should be careful, Emily.””
Walter immediately moved between us.
“Don’t threaten her.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“I’m not threatening anyone.””
Then he looked at me.
“I’m warning you.””
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
“One question, Dad.””
Walter didn’t answer.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t investigate the woman who suddenly appears in your new will?””
The door closed.
I stood there frozen.
Because suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t about inheritance.
It was about power.
And Daniel Madden was willing to destroy anyone who stood between him and what he believed was his.
Walter looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For bringing you into this.””
I looked at the closed door.
“Walter…”
“Yes?””
“What exactly did you put in the will?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached for the folder.
And pulled out the final page.
My name was written at the top.
But underneath it was something that made my blood run cold.
A percentage.
A responsibility.
May you like
And a sentence I never expected to read.
*“Upon my death, Emily Carter will become the final decision-maker of Madden Global Holdings.””*
