Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
The letter felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Not because it was paper.
Because it was my father’s voice.
The voice of a man I had spent my whole life missing.
And now those words were telling me the person I trusted most might have been hiding the biggest secret of all.
Your mother did.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
But the meaning refused to change.
Detective Reed watched my face carefully.
“Ethan.””
I looked up.
“Did my mom kill my dad?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was worse than any answer.
The wind moved through the trees behind us.
The cemetery suddenly felt different.
Not like a place where we found answers.
Like a place where more questions were buried.
Detective Reed took the letter from my hand.
“We need to talk to Claire.””
I nodded.
But part of me didn’t want to go.
Because for the first time in my life, I was afraid of hearing my mother’s voice.
The hospital room was dark when we returned.
My mother was awake.
She looked at my face and immediately knew.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
Detective Reed placed the letter on the table.
Claire saw the handwriting.
Her entire body froze.
“Where did you get that?””
“The cemetery,” Detective Reed said.
My mother looked terrified.
“What cemetery?””
“The Parker family cemetery.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
She looked at the letter.
Then at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
“Mom…”
My voice cracked.
“Did you bury Dad?””
Claire closed her eyes.
The room became painfully quiet.
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
Detective Reed stepped closer.
“Explain.””
My mother took a deep breath.
“I didn’t kill him.””
I stared at her.
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he asked me to.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
Claire started crying.
“The night Daniel disappeared, he came to me.””
She looked at the window.
“He was injured.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Richard attacked him.””
Detective Reed frowned.
“Then why hide the body?””
My mother wiped her tears.
“Because Daniel wasn’t dead.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was dying.””
Her voice shook.
“He knew he didn’t have long.””
I stared at her.
“You said Dad disappeared.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because Daniel made me promise.””
The room felt smaller.
“He told me Richard would come after you next.””
My anger softened slightly.
“But why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were a child.””
“I deserved the truth.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“You did.””
She reached toward me.
I didn’t move.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I looked away.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My mother’s face fell.
Because she knew it was true.
Everyone had made choices for me.
Everyone had decided what I could handle.
Everyone had hidden pieces of my own life.
Detective Reed spoke.
“Where is Daniel?””
My mother looked down.
“He died that night.””
The words hurt.
Even though some part of me already knew.
“He made me promise to bury him where nobody would find him.””
“Why?””
“Because he had evidence.””
She pointed toward the letter.
“Evidence against Richard.””
Detective Reed nodded slowly.
“And you protected it.””
“Yes.””
“Why wait until now?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because I thought Richard would never stop.””
She swallowed.
“But Ethan found the truth before I could.””
I finally spoke.
“Richard knew about the evidence.””
My mother looked confused.
“How?””
“He knew about the recordings.””
Her face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“He knew everything.””
A silence passed.
Then Detective Reed’s phone rang.
He answered.
“What?””
His expression changed.
“Are you sure?””
He looked at us.
“We have a problem.””
My mother sat up.
“What happened?””
Detective Reed lowered the phone.
“Richard escaped custody.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“He was being transferred.””
“How?””
The detective looked angry.
“Someone inside helped him.””
My mother went pale.
“Who?””
Detective Reed hesitated.
Then:
“Your family lawyer.””
Laura Bennett.
The woman who had helped us.
The woman who gave us the folder.
The woman who claimed to be protecting my mother.
“No,” my mother whispered.
Detective Reed looked at her.
“You know something?””
Claire stared at the floor.
Then she said:
“Laura wasn’t just my lawyer.””
Everyone waited.
“She was Daniel’s.””
The room went silent.
“And she was the person who introduced Richard to my husband.””
Two hours later, we found Laura.
She wasn’t running.
That was what surprised everyone.
She was sitting inside an empty office building downtown.
Waiting.
When Detective Reed entered, she didn’t resist.
She only looked tired.
“You finally figured it out.””
My mother stood behind the detective.
“Why?””
Laura looked at her.
“Because you were never supposed to survive.””
My blood turned cold.
“What does that mean?””
Laura looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Ethan.””
I hated those words.
Everyone who hurt us seemed to say them afterward.
Like an apology could erase years of damage.
“You helped Richard.””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“Because Richard had something I wanted.””
“What?””
“Freedom.””
Detective Reed crossed his arms.
“Explain.””
Laura sighed.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person Richard controlled.””
She looked at my mother.
“He had information on everyone.””
The room went quiet.
“Years ago, Richard discovered I helped Daniel hide money.””
My mother stared.
“You?””
Laura nodded.
“I thought I was helping a client. I didn’t know how deep it went.””
“Then why betray us?””
“Because Richard threatened my family.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Laura said:
“But I made one mistake.””
“What?””
“I underestimated Ethan.””
She looked at me.
“You were the one person Richard couldn’t control.””
I remembered the coffin.
The hammer.
The three knocks.
Laura continued:
“When Richard told me Claire was dead, I knew something was wrong.””
“Then why help?””
“Because I was trying to get close enough to destroy him.””
Detective Reed frowned.
“By helping him?””
“Yes.””
She reached into her bag.
Inside was a small recording device.
“I recorded everything.””
My heart started racing.
“Everything?””
Laura nodded.
“Including Richard’s plan.””
She pressed a button.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“Claire will be gone before anyone questions it.””
Another voice.
Laura.
“And Ethan?””
Richard answered.
“He’s just a child.””
The recording continued.
“He’ll believe whatever story we give him.””
My hands tightened.
Then Richard said something that made everyone freeze.
“After the funeral, I’ll finish what I started with Daniel.””
The recording stopped.
Detective Reed looked at Laura.
“What did he mean?””
Laura looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Then her phone rang.
Everyone turned.
She checked the screen.
Her face went white.
“What is it?””
She whispered:
“Richard.””
She answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard’s voice came through the speaker.
“You people really thought you found the truth.””
Detective Reed grabbed the phone.
“Richard.””
A laugh.
“Ethan.””
I froze.
Richard continued.
“You want to know what happened to your father?””
My heart pounded.
“Tell me.””
A pause.
Then Richard said:
“Ask your mother what she did after Daniel died.””
The call ended.
And everyone looked at Claire.
Because suddenly we all knew.
May you like
Richard wasn’t finished.
He was leading us somewhere.
