Chapter 3: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

The police arrived before anyone could leave.

The funeral became a crime scene.

Yellow tape surrounded the place where everyone had come to say goodbye.

Except nobody was saying goodbye anymore.

They were asking questions.

How was Claire alive?

How long had she been trapped?

Why had Richard told everyone she died?

I sat in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a blanket, watching my mother being carried outside.

She was alive.

That was the only thing I could think.

Alive.

A paramedic sat beside me.

“You did a brave thing today.””

I looked at the broken coffin.

“I just heard her.””

The paramedic frowned.

“Heard who?””

“My mom.””

I swallowed.

“She knocked.””

Nobody believed me before.

But now they had to.

Because my mother was standing outside.

Alive.

A few hours later, Claire was taken to the hospital.

Doctors said she was weak but stable.

I wanted to go with her.

But Detective Marcus Reed stopped me.

“Ethan.””

I looked up.

He was holding a small evidence bag.

Inside was my mother’s phone.

“We need to ask you some questions.””

“About Richard?””

He nodded.

“About everything.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know much.””

“That’s okay.””

He sat beside me.

“Sometimes children notice things adults ignore.””

I thought about that.

Then I remembered.

Three weeks before my mother disappeared, she had started acting differently.

She checked the locks twice every night.

She stopped leaving her phone on the kitchen counter.

She whispered when Richard entered the room.

I thought they were fighting.

I thought adults just had problems.

I didn’t understand.

Until now.

“She was scared of him,” I said.

Detective Reed looked up.

“Why do you think that?””

“Because she changed.””

I told him everything.

Every small detail.

The late-night arguments.

The hidden phone calls.

The way Richard always asked where she was going.

When I finished, Detective Reed was quiet.

Then Laura Bennett entered the room.

She carried the same folder from the funeral.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“Your mother wanted you to have this.””

She handed me an envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Ethan.

My fingers trembled.

“Did she write this?””

Laura nodded.

“She wrote it two days before the incident.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My eyes filled instantly.

My sweet Ethan,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

Laura placed a hand on my shoulder.

“She wanted you to know something.””

I forced myself to read.

Richard is not the man he pretends to be.

My heart sank.

I continued.

He has been hiding money. A lot of money. He found out I discovered what he was doing.

I looked at Detective Reed.

“What was he doing?””

Laura answered.

“Fraud.””

She opened the folder.

“Richard was moving company funds into fake accounts.””

“But why fake my mom’s death?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Detective Reed said:

“Because your mother was going to expose him.””

I stared at the letter.

There was one more page.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Ethan,

The most important thing I need you to know is this:

Richard knows about the recordings.

I looked up.

“Recordings?””

Laura nodded.

“Your mother made copies of conversations with Richard.””

“What conversations?””

The lawyer’s expression hardened.

“The ones where he admitted what he planned to do.””

I felt cold.

My mother had known.

She had been preparing.

She wasn’t helpless.

She was fighting.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the room became still.

Detective Reed gestured.

“Put it on speaker.””

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

Richard.

“Ethan.””

My blood ran cold.

“How are you calling me?””

A quiet laugh.

“You have no idea what you’ve started.””

Detective Reed motioned for me to keep talking.

“Where are you?””

Richard ignored the question.

“You think your mother is the victim.””

I clenched my fist.

“She is.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“Your mother lied to you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“You don’t know who Claire Parker really is.””

The call went silent.

Then he said something that made everyone in the room stop.

“Ask your mother what happened the night your real father disappeared.””
