Chapter 6: The Father Who Came Back

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

The man standing in front of me was impossible.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined my father walking through the door.

I imagined running into his arms.

I imagined asking why he left.

But I never imagined feeling afraid.

Because the truth was standing right in front of me.

And I didn’t know if I could trust it.

“Ethan…”

My father’s voice broke.

He took one step forward.

I stepped back.

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

But I remembered something.

Richard’s words.

Your father never disappeared alone.

“Are you really him?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Daniel froze.

“Yes.””

“How do I know?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know if you can.””

Nobody spoke.

Detective Reed moved between us.

“Start explaining.””

My father nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.””

He looked at the basement.

“This room was where everything started.””

He walked inside.

The officers watched him carefully.

“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to.””

“Then why?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Richard tried to kill me.””

The room went silent.

“You said Richard was your partner.””

“He was.””

My father picked up one of the documents.

“At first.””

He explained everything.

Years ago, Richard had approached him with a plan.

A way to hide stolen money.

A way to move millions through fake accounts.

Daniel had agreed.

At first.

Then he tried to leave.

“And Richard didn’t let you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He threatened Claire.””

My fists tightened.

“And me?””

His face collapsed.

“You were three years old.””

He looked away.

“I thought if I stayed away, he would leave you alone.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But seeing him standing there…

Older.

Broken.

Regretful.

Made everything harder.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because Richard made sure I couldn’t.””

“How?””

“He framed me.””

Detective Reed interrupted.

“We’ll need proof.””

Daniel nodded.

“I have it.””

He pointed toward the boxes.

“Richard kept everything.””

The officers searched through the documents.

Bank records.

Names.

Dates.

Evidence.

Everything Richard had hidden.

But one question remained.

“Where have you been all these years?””

My father looked at me.

“Running.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

He sat down.

“I spent years trying to collect enough evidence to bring him down.””

“And Mom?””

“I watched from a distance.””

My anger rose.

“You watched?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds like you left us.””

“I did.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I failed you, Ethan.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said something I never expected.

“Your mother hated me for it.””

I looked at him.

“She should have.””

He nodded.

“She did.””

A noise came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A police officer rushed in.

“Detective!””

“What happened?””

“We found Richard.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

The officer looked nervous.

“Not far from here.””

Detective Reed grabbed his jacket.

“Is he alive?””

The officer hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Then what’s wrong?””

The officer looked at me.

“He asked for Ethan.””

My blood ran cold.

Richard was sitting in an interrogation room when I saw him.

No gun.

No confident smile.

No control.

For the first time, he looked small.

But I knew better.

Danger didn’t disappear just because someone looked weak.

Detective Reed stood beside me.

“You don’t have to talk to him.””

I stared through the glass.

“I need answers.””

Richard looked up.

The moment he saw me, he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like he had been waiting.

I entered the room.

He looked at me.

“You look like your father.””

I stayed silent.

“Did he tell you everything?””

“Yes.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Of course he did.””

“What does that mean?””

He leaned forward.

“It means Daniel is still lying.””

My jaw tightened.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because everyone only hears one side.””

I stared at him.

“You put my mom in a coffin.””

His smile disappeared.

“She wasn’t supposed to wake up.””

The words made my blood freeze.

Richard continued.

“But that wasn’t the original plan.””

“What was?””

He looked at me.

“To protect you.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

He leaned back.

“You’re too much like Claire.””

I stood.

“I’m done.””

Then Richard said:

“Ask your mother why she never told you what happened on the night your father disappeared.””

I stopped.

Again.

The same question.

The same secret.

Richard smiled.

“Because Claire wasn’t the innocent person she wants you to think she is.””

I walked out.

But his words followed me.

And for the first time since my mother opened her eyes…

I wondered if saving her had uncovered something much worse.
