Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Camera
David Morgan had been Richard's business partner for seventeen years.
They had built their property development company from a small office above a hardware store into a successful regional business.
David was fifty-eight, charming, well-connected, and trusted by Richard almost as much as his own brother.
He had attended Richard and Margaret's wedding.
He had toasted their marriage.
He had even given Margaret a beautiful silver serving tray as a wedding gift.
Now Richard was beginning to wonder whether every friendly gesture had been an act.
"There's no way David is involved," Richard said.
Margaret sat beside him in the study.
"Did Susan have any reason to lie?""
Richard didn't answer.
He picked up his phone and called David.
"Can you come over tomorrow morning?""
David sounded cheerful.
"Of course. Everything all right?""
"We need to discuss some documents.""
"What kind of documents?""
"Financial ones.""
A brief pause.
"Sure. I'll be there.""
Richard ended the call.
Margaret watched him.
"Don't tell him what we know.""
Richard nodded.
"Let's see what he says first.""
David arrived at 9:15 a.m. the following morning.
He wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather portfolio.
"Richard! You sounded serious on the phone.""
Richard shook his hand.
"Sit down.""
David glanced at Margaret.
"Morning, Margaret.""
"David.""
He placed his portfolio on the desk.
"So, what's going on?""
Richard slid a copy of the financial authorization agreement toward him.
David examined it.
"What's this?""
"Have you seen it before?""
David looked at the document for several seconds.
Then he shook his head.
"No.""
Richard watched him carefully.
"You're sure?""
"Of course.""
Richard opened another folder.
It contained copies of Ethan's emails and the recovered financial drafts.
David adjusted his glasses.
"What's all this?""
"Someone has been trying to obtain control of my financial assets without my permission.""
David's expression became serious.
"That's disturbing.""
"Very.""
Richard placed the document on the desk.
"Do you recognize Carter Legacy Holdings?""
David paused.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Richard noticed.
"Yes," David said.
"I've heard the name.""
"From where?""
"Business circles, probably.""
"Who owns it?""
"I wouldn't know.""
Richard leaned forward.
"My son.""
David nodded slowly.
"Well, that's certainly interesting.""
Margaret watched David's hands.
He had stopped moving them.
Richard continued.
"Ethan has also been involved in a campaign to fabricate evidence against Margaret.""
David turned toward her.
"What?""
"False photographs. Planted items. Manipulated security footage.""
David shook his head.
"That's horrible.""
Richard studied his expression.
"Someone suggested you helped him.""
David immediately laughed.
"Who said that?""
"Susan.""
David leaned back.
"Susan has always been dramatic.""
"Did you tell Ethan how to manipulate the security system?""
David's smile disappeared.
"Absolutely not.""
"Did you discuss the cameras with him?""
"Maybe. We talked about security arrangements when I visited last month.""
"What arrangements?""
"Nothing unusual.""
Richard closed the folder.
"Then you won't mind if we review the messages between you and Ethan.""
David looked at him.
"What messages?""
Richard didn't respond.
David stood.
"Richard, I don't appreciate being treated like a suspect.""
Richard remained seated.
"Then help me understand why your name keeps appearing in this.""
David picked up his portfolio.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
He walked toward the door.
Then he stopped.
"One more thing. Be careful about believing everything your wife tells you.""
Richard stood.
"Leave.""
David left without another word.
Two hours later, Jonathan called.
He had received a message from a former employee of David's company.
The man had worked in information technology and had recently discovered unusual access to the company's document storage system.
He was willing to meet.
Richard arranged a meeting at Jonathan's office.
The former employee, Peter Lawson, arrived carrying a small external drive.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I didn't know whether I should get involved," Peter said.
Jonathan invited him to sit.
"What did you find?""
Peter placed the drive on the table.
"Someone used a company device to access the security software at Richard's house.""
Richard frowned.
"Who?""
Peter opened his laptop.
"The login was registered to a temporary account. But the device identifier matches a laptop assigned to David Morgan.""
Richard stared.
"David used his company laptop to access my security system?""
"Yes.""
Peter opened a second file.
"There were also several emails exchanged between David and Ethan.""
Jonathan leaned forward.
"Can we see them?""
Peter opened the first email.
David had written:
If your father is distracted by personal problems, he won't notice the changes being prepared in the company records.
Richard felt a chill.
The next message was from Ethan.
I need Margaret out before the next trust review.
David's reply was brief.
Then give your father something he can't ignore.
Richard closed his eyes.
Peter opened another attachment.
It contained instructions for creating a staged image using photographs taken inside Richard's house.
David had sent Ethan a diagram showing the camera angles in the upstairs hallway.
Margaret stared at the screen.
"He helped plan it.""
Peter nodded.
"Yes.""
Jonathan scrolled through the emails.
Then he stopped at one dated four months earlier.
The subject line was:
*THE PROPERTY TRANSFER.*
Richard leaned closer.
The email discussed transferring three commercial properties into a separate company.
The company was not Carter Legacy Holdings.
It was Morgan Development Partners.
Richard looked up.
"That's your company," he said quietly.
Peter nodded.
"David was trying to move the properties before the annual financial review.""
Jonathan examined the attachment.
The proposed transfer listed Richard's properties as collateral for a new business loan.
But Richard had never approved it.
"How much?"" he asked.
Peter swallowed.
"Approximately four million dollars in property value.""
Richard leaned back.
The room seemed to spin.
David hadn't simply wanted to help Ethan gain control of the inheritance.
He had his own financial motive.
If Richard's personal situation became chaotic, David could move assets through the business without attracting immediate attention.
Margaret looked at her husband.
"Did Ethan know?""
Peter opened another message.
Ethan had written:
Once Dad removes Margaret and signs the authorization, the rest should be easy.
David replied:
Don't worry. I'll handle the business side.
Richard's face hardened.
"They were working together.""
Jonathan nodded.
"That's what the correspondence suggests. We need to preserve everything and have the financial records independently audited.""
Richard looked at Peter.
"Thank you.""
Peter nodded.
"I should have spoken up earlier.""
Richard shook his head.
"You're speaking up now.""
By the end of the day, Jonathan had contacted the company's external accountants.
Richard also suspended David's access to the relevant business accounts, pending legal review.
But the most important discovery came from a final email Peter had recovered.
It was sent from David to Ethan two days before the staged photograph.
Your father needs to believe the scandal is real. Don't let him see the original camera footage. If he checks it, the whole arrangement collapses.
Below that was another sentence.
And make sure the old recording from the study is deleted.
Richard frowned.
"Old recording?""
Peter nodded.
"There was a camera in the study. It captured activity near the business document cabinet.""
Richard looked at him.
"What activity?""
Peter opened the archived video.
The recording showed David entering Richard's study late one evening.
He approached the desk.
Opened a locked drawer.
Removed a folder.
Then photographed several documents with his phone.
Margaret leaned forward.
"What's in that folder?""
Richard recognized the label.
It was the original property ownership file.
The same file that contained his company's founding agreements.
Peter paused the recording.
"There's another part.""
He continued playing.
David returned the documents to the drawer.
But before leaving, he placed a small envelope underneath the folder.
Richard stared at the screen.
"What is that?""
Peter zoomed in.
The envelope had a name written on it.
*EVELYN CARTER.*
Margaret looked at Richard.
"Why would David have something belonging to Evelyn?""
Richard's expression changed.
He opened the old estate correspondence file Jonathan had brought earlier.
He searched through the documents.
Then he stopped.
One of Evelyn's original letters was missing.
The letter had been mentioned in an estate inventory but had never been located.
Jonathan examined the footage.
"That envelope may contain the missing correspondence.""
Richard looked at Margaret.
"Why would David take it?""
Nobody answered.
Then Peter opened another recovered message.
It was from David to Ethan.
The letter proves what we need. Once your father sees it, he'll understand why Margaret cannot remain in control of the trust.
Margaret's heart began pounding.
"What letter?""
Jonathan's expression became grave.
"There may be another document Evelyn left behind. Something that could change the entire inheritance arrangement.""
Richard stared at the screen.
Then he noticed the date of David's recording.
It was six months earlier.
Before the staged photographs.
Before the planted evidence.
Before Ethan had ever accused Margaret.
David had been searching for Evelyn's letter long before the scandal began.
And if he had found it, the contents might explain why two men and one woman had spent months trying to remove Margaret from the family trust.
That evening, Richard returned home carrying the folder Jonathan had prepared.
Margaret was waiting in the living room.
"Did you find the letter?""
"Not yet.""
He sat beside her.
"But I found something else.""
He opened a document.
It was a copy of Evelyn's original estate inventory.
At the bottom was a reference to an additional sealed instruction.
The document stated that Evelyn had placed it in the custody of a private solicitor.
Jonathan had never received it.
Richard frowned.
"Who was the solicitor?""
He read the name.
Then looked up.
It was a lawyer who had died four years earlier.
But the law firm had not closed.
Its records were now managed by a new partner.
Richard called Jonathan.
"There's another solicitor's file.""
Jonathan answered immediately.
"What file?""
Richard explained.
There was a pause.
Then Jonathan said something unexpected.
"I know that firm.""
"Can they locate the document?""
"They should be able to. But Richard, there's something you need to understand.""
"What?""
"Evelyn's original trust agreement contains a clause that refers to a sealed personal declaration. I've never seen it.""
Richard looked toward Margaret.
"What does the declaration say?""
"I don't know.""
"Can it change the beneficiary?""
"Possibly.""
Richard went still.
Jonathan continued.
"If the declaration is authentic and legally valid, it may contain instructions that override some of the assumptions we've been working with.""
Richard ended the call.
Margaret stared at him.
"Do you think Ethan knows?""
Richard looked down at the estate inventory.
"I think David found out about it first.""
His phone buzzed.
An email had arrived from an unknown address.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Only one sentence.
If you want to know why Evelyn chose Margaret, ask what happened the night before she died.
Attached was a photograph of an old handwritten letter.
Richard opened it.
He recognized Evelyn's handwriting.
But the message wasn't addressed to him.
It was addressed to Margaret.
May you like
And the first line read:
If you're reading this, then my son has finally made the mistake I was afraid he would make.
